What's the point in having races in skyrim?

Oh, Wait, They all get a bonus. ffs guys just because one race has an advantage in a certain way over another isnt a bad thing, its GOOD. What's the point in using a shotgun, because that has too much close range damage omg!!!

    Also,different races crafts different-looking gear.

That's why I play argonian and I don't play other races, argonians are better for my playstile.I wanted to play as nord but their buffs are just stupid and I feel stupid playing like one of them.

If you have a cool looking race then choosing your 'class', then that would alter your ability to your standard and choice so you don't get a bad looking race with the skills you want - you can easily get the look you want and what perks and quest lines you want.

Hey, I didn't say its a bad thing, what I meant is that if there aren't any bonuses thats how we'll choose, if you want to be sneaky you'll chose the tribal assasins instead of the berzerking brutes, even if there isn't any benefit or detriment to it, but it also is't exactly a good thing, in TES games its ok because you'll probably stick to one play-style but I dont know if it'll be good thing in starbound, because you'll probably wan't to try differnt play-styles whitout having to make a new char and start all over again.
Did you miss the "aesthetics" part?

Them being a light decision is excactly what the devs want. I HATE games that make you make a choose BEFORE THE GAME EVEN STARTS. I got screwed over on Skyrim because I choosed a bad race and chose to train the wrong skills, so I had to restart. I don't want to have to restart on Starbound all because the race I choose is bad.

    I ENTIRELY DISAGREE.

since when is the selling point of a game to play as a certain race? D:

im pretty sure most people like to play skyrim because you can do just about anything you want in it

why does it sell millions? probably because of the hype it gets, marketing, it's not hard to play so nearly anyone can pick it up and be good
and no, the elder scrolls series doesn't really have good design, once the horrid combat system is fixed, then maybe

but skyrim is basically the size of an ocean, with the depth of a puddle

but onto starbound now, i think the races don't need certain bonus' to be set apart from one another

if you want to play as a avian, or a human, what's stopping you? there's no "extra jump height" or something that an avian would get over a human. so if i wanted to play as avian, but want to be good at something specific, yet the humans have the bonus i want that avians don't have, so then which do i chose? i want to be an avian but they don't have a good bonus that the humans have

a simple way to set them apart is have each race get a different starter set of gear, easily swapped out for something else in no time

humans could get a pistol and a dagger maybe with basic clothes
avians get a shield and spear with tribal type gear i suppose

and each race would have a different starting hp amount and battery/or stamina amount

humans would have an even amount of both
avians would get more hp over battery/stamina

but both can be increased with some items or something

these are some small changes that don't effect anyone's play style or force them into using something they don't want

take a look at demon's souls and dark souls for how classes(in this case, races) should be handled, everyone can use anything they want, each class just starts with a different level, stats and gear
nothing like "knight class get's extra dmg with swords while a bandit get's better criticals with an axe"

hum... you've got a point... I appreciate someone disagrees with me with an actual argument. You changed my point of view, all though i still think race must have, in one way or another, influence in quests, or your relationship with the crewmen

Aesthetics is kind of something we have already taken into account. Backstory is only used for roleplaying really. I can see how this could appeal to some people, i'm just thinking about the playerbase on a much larger scale.

Actually, unless a leveling system is added, this wouldn't be a problem. It's also something we are all attempting to avoid. I suggest that if anything, give the classes small buffs that make them better at whatever they are good at, but not so much that it makes the playing experience worse if you change your mind.

Yes, skyrim's selling point is it's class/race system. It allows people to have multiple types of experiences playing the same game over. What's stopping me from playing multiple races? The fact that there's no reason to! Why would I want to start a game over? I already have an awesome character, and can get almost infinite new experience with that character, so what's the point of a new character? And the last thing you said is EXACTLY what I said to do. Read all of my posts before complaining. Also, I know skyrim's combat system sucks. That's because it focuses on class/race systems. It forfeits combat for an in depth (yeah, that's right DEPTH) system of perks and levels. This is obviously NOT how starbound is designed. Had you read my post, you would realize that my point is that starbound should have a perk system fitting to its style. Simple little stat increases that benefit any and all playstyles equally, in balanced ways. The dev team is definitely more than smart enough to do it well. EXAMPLE: avians have keen eyes, and so get an accuracy boost. This could translate to good weapon accuracy, and better chances of hitting weak point in melee battle, they can notice ores more easily than other races, etc. Little helpful things that don't make choosing one over another change how you play. In real life, species HAVE these kinds of differences, so it makes no sense for these species to have no differences. In fact, the apex lore says they are of exceedingly high intelligence. If this doesn't translate to something in game, then it just makes no sense. This should translate to apex being able to more quickly learn to create certain items, or possibly just faster at creating these items. They should be able to maybe say, pack more in their pack because of better space management, etc. technically, I also believe there should be growth, maybe not leveling system in its original sense, but the ability to learn things. I agree, it makes no sense for someone to get hundred of times more powerful through an arbitrary level system, but there should be certain things, like maybe first aid. Something you learn once, instead of "levelling up." But that's a discussion for elsewhere.

I suppose small quest effects would be cool, but even changing the crew up is a bit annoying. I played SWTOR on the level 15 free trial, on my dark side character I kept making my companion hate me because she likes it when I'm nice, and on my light side character my companion doesn't like me because I'm to graceful to people. It makes me angry sometimes, because companions that like you have bonuses.

So yeah, having it effect crew members would be very annoying to me personally.

    Here is my suggestion.

Each race has different abilities that are minor and don't change all that much about the gameplay, but they should change things enough to give reason to play the game again as a different race.

To fix the problem of pinning a player to a certain play style, not only are minor differences good, but here is another fix as well. In the tutorial, have the character explore the dark spaceship (assuming the lights aren't on, it is abandoned after all). Because of the darkness, you can't see the character at all, just his shadow. The tutorial will teach you some basic gameplay mechanics. It will show you a variety of things, such as archery, melee, jumping around, etc. By the end of the tutorial, a thought bubble appears above the character that says, "From the looks of things, this appears to be an abandoned space station, but where does this station float? Where am I? Who am I?" It will then tell you to select your race, each race with a brief description and attributes. After you're done, the character will find a switch and flip it, turning on the lights. The character will then look at his reflection on a wall and say, "Ah, so I'm an [insert race here], now everything is coming back to me. My home...what happened?"

I think that would be a good introduction.

Why do we need to have racial bonuses? Gameplay will be wieghed heavily on the gear you choose to use. If you put minor quirks in just to add distinguishing traits then they will simply be over-shadowed by the flexibility of the item pool and become a moot addition.

I don't know why some of you feel the need to compare Starbound to Skyrim. 2 very diferent genre here. In Skyrim races can have bonuses because you are commiting everywhere else. You permanatly choose your race and where your perks go. In Starbound your character is classified by the gear you carry. In Skyrim its based on how you spec. Choosing a race based on if you like how they look or not is exactly what I want from Starbound.

Asthetics is enough for me. To add perks to races is to drive off the path Tiy is sending this game.

Fairly nice, though a little bit reminiscent of Pokemon intros. Hi, I'm professor Oak! What gender are you? :D But maybe a little more subtle than "who am I' (prompt for name). It's just a tad too cheesy in my opinion. I like the dark spaceship idea, but I think it should be a little less... contextual. Whenever a game tries to tie in why you're choosing your race, it just usually doesn't make sense. Maybe a better way would be you finally find the ship's generator and pull the lever, and as the lights come on, it opens up the character creator.

I would go for Racial Bonuses that'll let ya do something cool, like the idea of +Jump Height & such. Bonuses that can benefit ANY & ALL 'Classes'.

    Here's my 1 1/2 cents:

    Human: +20% Resource Gathering Speed.
Avian: -10% Fall Damage & +10% Jump Height.
    Apex: +20% Skill Learning Speed.

I'm impressed by how much people don't want to have races do something... Oh well, i think i was not talking for the many after all. Maybe having the races being just aesthetic is ok. I'm not ENTIRELY convinced, that your species shouldn't have at least a minimum impact on game-play or story or quests or relationships. If it's not one of these, at least SOMETHING, like the starting planet.

EDIT: please, stop relating avians with jumping and falling, they are wingless.

    Relinies King Homestuck III

Avians will still have hollow bones, because they USED to fly. Bones are heavy, and thus avians have hallow bones. They SHOULD be able to jump higher, though I can't say much for gliding.

  19. Adurna

    Adurna Big Damn Hero

Exactly, but not the avian thing, try something more like hawkeyes or something, they're flightless, like penguins.
But even if it is something that affects combat, it could easily be something like (bad idea, but good for example) wariorlikerace gets +10 to all damage, or something. It obviously benefits all classes by being a power boost (reiterating, bad idea, "strength" should not affect damage, because guns, its just an example of how to make a perk benefit all possible classes)
