Races are mostly cosmetic. They have no passive abilities. However, they get food recipes belonging to their race, and their armor has unique effects. All races can obtain all race armors. Also, race will effect npc speech towards you.

Implementation of race-unique abilities will probably not happen, with the exception of user-made mods.

Is there a sudden influx of new members or something?

To some extent, but not ridiculously so. Even when there isn't an influx, people still miss the memo and make assumptions about racial abilities.

You know, I didn't think about it till just now, but that would be a neat mod to work on too. Hmm...

This game is really making me want to get into modding. More so then any Bethesda game has.
Not to say the base game won't be good enough or anything. I'm sure it's going to be great. I just really want to tinker with it.

Not really, but there might be soon, with the beta coming up. Just trying to tell them about it.

Good on ya either way. The stuff we learn as active users on the Forums doesn't always make it down the grapevine. That's why threads like Blue's list of 'planned features/content' are heralded so much.

Well that's a letdown. I would've loved using passive abilities to enhance my experience in the game.

Let's hope they change their mind.

i doubt they will, considering they don't want it to become like choosing a class.

No. You'd be choosing a race, not a class. The racial abilities don't have to limit you to weapons and armor...

It's sort sad, they for save the work needed for balance, decided to go with "VANITY ONLY" in terms of races , i don't really see the warm that would do if the races were with unique things of their own if it was balanced to everybody. It's sort unique at the start of the game then you start to gear up with things all other races also use , and certainly at some point when all armored, people can't tell anymore if what race you are. :cautious:

    Well from my D&D experience.

Almost every DM I know (Myself included) uses the "Race is cosmetic/roleplay only" houserule.
Generally the idea is that a player should choose the race that best suits their character and how they want to play them rather then what just works mechanically best.

That said, on the rare times I feel like adding in some race specific bonus I always make my players randomly roll, to prevent min-maxing.

I would be hoping for a mod that adds some minor aspect of the racial ability stuff to the race itself, and the racial armour would "enhance" that ability. Personally I don't pick things like races based on bonuses (or min-max for that matter) anyway, so having races just being cosmetic is solving a problem that doesn't really exist for me, so I would like to get more of the uniqueness between races back beyond the lore/appearance stuff.

  18. As an added funfact, this is intented as a way of making every character equal so that you aren't wanting to only use character "A" because his stats or special abilities are the best one's you want and the rest of the races unappealing. This should make replayability with other characters that much more enjoyable.

If you don't want to play a race, it's purely for cosmetic reasons.

Well, I suppose I could live with just roleplaying the racial differences, but I also wanted the challenge of working around the defects that are brought about by the advantages.

I like the fact that they chose to make races cosmetic. I'd really hate to put some serious hours into the game and find out that my racial abilities aren't going to help me but that other race can completely negate some of the danger because of theirs. As it stands now, if I don't like the ability I just need to find/make a set of armor that does what I want it to.

Maybe they'll add negative effects to armor and weapons so you'll still be able to do that.
