Quick Question

Is there any way to recover your character before the wipe? It may be possible because I've looked around the Starbound folder and found out that my old character's data is still there.

Open up the .player file in your favourite hex editor.
extra decimals
after the first 31 insert 2E 31
So it goes from 31 00 00 to 31 2E 31 00 00

 

Well, it did restore my character but my old ship is gone and when you try to travel to other planets it just crashes you.

Eh, it's better than nothing I guess.

 

Your part of a beta test.. your here to help find bugs and issues. If you choose to keep your old save though editing do NOT report bugs your just going to waste peoples time. This part of beta is to help the devs bug test and find flaws. It's a lot harder to impossible to do that if you just keep skipping back to the end game unable to see the game fresh with the new changes on top of the fact if you recover your old save you are introducing possible errors and bugs that normally can't exist. Biggest pet peeve of mine -.-

 

Because the endgame is totally perfect and bugfree, there are no bugs that affect all players and I'm a waste of time if I want to play the game my way.

 

You also miss the point the end game is also not done nor even implemented. When doing any form of bug testing that involves major system redesigns as well as major overhauls to core systems or mechanics starting from the "current" end solves little since you are viewing the changes though a extremely skewed filter. Your free to play as you will i never said you couldn't i said don't bother reporting errors unless you personally take the extra time to ensure that the problem happens regardless if you are using your old save or not.

Most people will not take that extra time to make sure restoring their character wasn't the cause of the error. They then report crashes or inconsistency in there experience. While for most things this may not cause a problem it can cause needless flooding of reported errors or bugs that should NOT be happening to start with. A few stupid reports due to bug testers own fault or tampering shouldn't be a "ok" thing period when it comes to bug testing.

 

Well, if you want to be blunt about it, yes.

The endgame of the new patch is new, and if you haven't reached it with a new character, then what exactly are you testing? How do we rule out problems created by your cheated grandftathered character and not the new changes by themselves? Try to be scientific for a moment.

 

well. its still in beta. which means you should be tooo attached to your character. because it does say expect character wipes and such.

+ I dont think there is a way to restore old charcters the reason there are character wipes is because there might be changes in the items and armor you currently have.. for example before it use to cost 2 diamond ore to make 1 diamond... now it costs 3 ores. and if you had a bunch of diamonds before then it wouldnt be the same anymore..
also its good the start of fresh because i know i always get bored of the game quickly when theres nothing to do. i like starting of fresh after updates to test the game more in depth and see what things have changed at start game and end game

 

I understand that it is still in beta and would expect character wipes, but the main reason I wanted to get my old character back is because of the instruments that I've acquired.
