Hello everyone! I'm new to Starbound (sort of--I was here a long time ago for a bit, then came back now), and it seems to me like another 'sandbox' game like Minecraft or Terraria--but seeing all the codex entries and planned intro sequences, I was wondering if anyone knows if this game will actually have some sort of plot--more than just 'find resources, build small things, then work up to big things until you beat the hardest boss'--or if the game is just going to have interesting 'lore' codex entries but no plot. Another question I had was: Are the developers bringing the hunger and heat systems back? Also, question 3: Now, all my characters start in the same world with the same biome, but before, they used to start on their own planets, with interesting scenery. Now, I can't create too many characters/let my siblings create too many characters, for fear that I would deplete all the beginning planet's resources. Are the devs planning on keeping this? And #4: Is everyone's universe created the same, with different crash sites? Or are all universes unique (randomly generated)? (For example, if I crashed on some Epsilon planet in one corner of the universe, would I be able to find my friend's exact Alpha planet on the other side of the same universe? or is there a chance it wouldn't exist?) Finally, #5: Is there any good, singular, organized place to look for the answers to all these questions, or can this only be found in the occasional dev comments, forums, and social media? If anyone knows the answers to these questions, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
There will definitely be a plot beyond codex entries. It is being worked into every system, including: Quests, NPC dialog (including tenants in colonies), Missions, and game mechanics themselves. (You have to fly through a black hole to get to the highest tier systems, which are deeply woven into the plot) Here is concept art for 5 of the main lore NPCs: http://i.imgur.com/qDsfuze.jpg (my labels) You can read about the beginnings of the plot on the wiki page I linked above, as well as here: http://starbounder.org/Upcoming_features (This page has tons of info about the future of the game) They absolutely are, likely only for Normal and above difficulties though. In the next Stable update (about 1 week away), this is already fixed. All new characters have an extremely high chance of starting on brand new planets. Everyone's universe is the same, however they are not connected unless you are playing on a multiplayer server. So you can give somebody coordinates and they will find the same planet as you, but not your changes to that planet. On a multiplayer server they can see all of your changes and build with you. Even on single player though, you can send somebody your world file outside the game and they can play on your planet that way. (the world files have planet coordinates in the file name) The official wiki is the best place to find answers to 90% of the smaller questions you may have: http://starbounder.org/Main_Page You can also search on these forums or the Starbound subreddit. Asking here like you did is perfectly fine too though. P.S. I can give sources for any of this if need be, or answer any further questions
A good place to look would be in the dev update threads when they're posted, it can contain a lot of info & discussion by the community I'll also try my best to answer these questions! 1. I'm 90% sure they're going to be implementing a plot to the game, there's already a ton of lore for the races. 2. Yes, the developers have stated before they were unhappy with how the Hunger system worked so they removed it while they revamped it (I'm not too sure on temperature, though). 3. The reason your characters all start on the same level is because the devs set it to do that while they rework those biomes for easier access 4. If you're on the same Operating System & bit-type (32 vs. 64) then you should have the same co-ordinates and generation as another user with the same specs I listed! You can check out the Coordinates Megathread for some examples! I hope I helped answer some of your questions
1) The game has an overplot that will be explored mainly through set story missions, and filled out with lorebooks. 2) Hunger is slated to return for higher difficultly levels, but drastically reworked because the old system was a poorly-implemented intrusion and they didn't like it. Temperature, which was also poorly-implemented, has already been changed to "this planet is too hot/cold to survive without a certain Tech installed". 3) That is a testing thing that will change eventually. By "1.0" new characters will always start out on a "lush" type planet, but that planet will be randomly picked. 4) Most universes are the same. You should be able to use coordinates posted by others to find the same buildings and prizes they do on planets. 5) Here is about the best there is.
1. I believe they are working on a story. 2. I hope they bring back hunger/heat as well OP, but I doubt it will take place until after official release unfortunately for people like you and I that get swept under the rug. You'll find a lot of people on the forums here that are very vocal about being anti hunger/heat unfortunately. You'll also find some strong threads for hunger/temp though somewhere. 3. I also agree this is a problem, but yet again, it seems there are a good deal of people on the forums that like set start planets. You can always delete your universe to start fresh again, but it'll wipe everything in that universe that you've ever built. 4. All universes are the same depending on your OS (they're procedurally generated with the same seed depending on the OS). I have heard rumors however that there is a way to modify the seed to anything you want to create a truly random universe (at least, as random as your logical mind can come up with). 5. Starbounder the wiki is very helpful for me, but it wouldn't really answer all the questions you asked here. Forums are a good place for that
