I usually make a quick sketch of the building then bring it to an architect who will draw the floor plans.
Then I bring the plans to an engineer who makes sure that the wall and foundations are solid enough to support the roof.

So far, Starbound has cost me thousands of dollars.

I use Photoshop or any other pixel editing program you can find.

Very easy to design and construct structures on there. Very useful for things like arcs and circles and special shaped roofs.

usually I just wing it. Ya know just let what ever flows out become something. In the end though most of the time it look like nothing but a giant underground bunker but with some kewl stuff in it.

I just start and see where it goes, I get a lot of compliments so it works for me. I never really know what I'm doing but I prefer to keep the lighting dim and avoid using bright colours except white.
This makes everything cozy and homely.
But other than that there's not really any planning though I do sometimes start a building with "Hmm this is going to be a restaurant" for example. Though just building on improv is the best thing for me.

The ease of making buildings is one of the strong points of Starbound.

I have never planed out anything when I'm building. All I do is make one basic room then I just go with my gut and build something expand a part and boom you have an awesome home base ^^ plus like someone said in this forum before symmetry is not good fir your buildings ;)

Platforms are awesome when making a building look less blocky

Assuming you have a rough idea of what you want to build, the best thing to do is just start laying out blocks. As a few people have mentioned earlier, you can lay out the shape in dirt first if you're unsure of yourself but I prefer to see the proper blocks - though placing dirt where the doors will be is a good idea so you can attach the rest of the wall. I also tend to put dirt on the background layer behind blocks, so I have something to attach the back wall to without wasting blocks.

The most important thing when making anything is to think in terms of useful spaces. Don't just slap rooms all over and then fill them with stuff, always know what a room is going to be used for first. It's much easier to design when you're thinking "This will be a bedroom" or "This control room needs lots of wall space for monitors" than to just build a bunch of different sized rectangles and then try to decorate them.

Finally, I'm going to shamelessly link to my youtube channel, which has videos of my bases, because I'm vain and require constant approval. Love me! :V

For me its just a "oh, I'll put this here" type thing. I tend to obsess over the walls & overall structure the most.
I'm new enough to the game that getting my hands on specific furniture etc. can still be difficult, so I decorate it with whatever I can find.

With Terrarria out for some time now, there are blueprints for building any house you want in these types of games. Other than some things I have seen the dev's create, I haven't really seen any structure created that I haven't seen before. But your best bet for inspiration is the web if your having a hard time creating on your own.

My style matches others. Start small and basic. Expand it over time to look majestic.

    I build completely YOLO. :p

Anyone know how to take really zoomed out screenshots? Like, further than the highest in game zoom. I'm in the process of building a hueg arse high tech base, and I've seen people with stuff even bigger than what I'm making take screen shots of their whole structure.

I haven't built anything big in Starbound yet since I'm not really sure I would like loosing it all, but back in Terraria, I would often make a "blueprint" out of dirt. Basicly, just using something I can remove fast to make the outline of what I wanted to build. If it looked wrong, I could change it around then. Otherwise, I would build everything as I go.

Sometimes I look up concept art on google images to help inspire me with a design for a structure I plan on building. It's not often that I make a sketch unless I'm planning something really intricate, though.

I just wing it. If you saw any of my buildings at the start they would look very basic. It's because I add to it, bit by bit. Occasionally I'll think "I want this in that room...but it's too small, I can't make it bigger without the place looking stupid unless I add something here too..."
