I mentioned before that Im sure some materials are more difficult to get than others. You could also stock up on the hard to get stuff and sell it. That would be nice.
Then again, there would have to be a reason to accumulate that much gold many pixels otherwise there would be no point to sell things.

  2. I am a mats whore to the max, so I will definitely be in possession of harder to obtain materials for trade, when I'm not using them myself anyways. For me it will never be enough Pixels, I'm for financial security even if there's nothing to buy lol.

Screw wasting time sitting there in one spot in a Shop to sell stuff... that's NPC work. ;)

If the game is modable like minecraft, you bet your hat someone will mod things in like stand-alone shops.

I've done some thinking about in game economy but it is based around item durability and the need to replace them eventualy or at least maintain them and the developement of tools to make the creation of more equipement and repair of already existing one cheaper. This and amunition.
If you are at all interested it was "Thinkering with durability". I might bother to dig it out of the mass the get a link another time.

Durability would just be a way to increase demand for something by making it consumable. If they make something that is important AND consumable, then they will have the demand that will drive the economy to find those consumables. It doesn't have to be just weapons or armor.

What they mean is, a modder can simply access any item they wish making an economy redundant. You want to sell a Floran Thorn Vine Sword for 50'000 pix? Modder just gets one free.

For an economy to form, you would need a server with bound characters so no one can just add items to their character in singleplayer before loading back in to the server with non legit items to sell. Second, you would need to disable outside mods to the server to stop people pulling a dodgy as well

Well, seeing as there are unique items not seen anywhere else, it might be hard to dupe everything that could be sold. Still, multiplayer should definitely require mods that prevents cheating, which should be relatively easy and painless if terraria is of any indication.

Sure the randomly generated stuff would be slightly harder to manage, but you know there will be a mod that gives you a pop up that lets you choose the colour and modules of a weapon, including it's stats, making player generated weapons with any available choice.

I won't use those things, never been a big mod person really for that reason, it gets hard to troll through thousands of over powered mods trying to find things that suit the spirit of the game and maintain a balance too.

I think there should be a secondary currency that are simply photos of cute animals. You can keep them all for yourself or trade them in for rare items like a puppy, cat ears, or even guns that do nothing but make random baby animal sounds. The gun is also the only known weakness for the final boss: the lord of all things un-cute.

Or not because my idea is stupid.

Only way I see it possible without mobs is probably have vending machines scattered all over the planet you choose, and sell the products inside them for a slightly higher price.
Just hope no marauder jacks you stash ;)

You would only be able to do it on a multiplayer server that forces server side characters, everything else could or would be inventory edited in. Games like these can't really have economy dynamics to it, they're just too easy to mod and hack.

Oh yeah, I agree. There will be mods for everything. It takes a certain spirit of RP in order to ensure that the players abide by the rules, and never cheat with hacking. I suppose stable trading could only happen with a bunch of friends who agrees to certain standards.

I have a feeling that in public multiplayer servers there can be some sort of internet-wide common planetary hub. I mean that some low-level planetary seed with easy to remember coordinates could be designated as entrance point for everyone who visits the server for the first time. Basically, Jita from EVE Online, but completely different. Any player can go to this planet to meet people, to find kiosks with goods players sell, et cetera.

One way to make players important to the economy is make an item that only players can make.

That is actually plausible, since we can do this:
