Q&A with Kyren - Transcript

Kyren was answering questions for hoooours this morning and posted a pastebin of the transcript to Twitter. Someone asked where to find it, so I thought a thread might be useful. Here it is in all its tremendously-long glory.

I was actually going to participate, but work. ;_; I would have loved to ask my questions.

Still not much on wiring
I just noticed that tiy uses <@Tiy> and <@Tiyuri> on IRC as well.

someone needs to compile the important stuff. my eyes are hurting with so much stuff. the layout makes it hard to keep track and some of the things are just techno-babble i dont get :S

 

@Phyrex, I agree. It would be very nice with a compiled list. Especially when reading on the phone.

 

Yeahhh, I figured as much. I can try to do that tomorrow, but if anyone else wants to they can certainly go right ahead.

 

the water physics are nothing like terraria
there are wereturtles
the random creatues will have common sets of animations
the game is currently ~49k lines of code not counting whitespacecs
there will be a modding api, coming soon after release
there might be an out of process api
the core team will update as long as possible, then hand it over to another team assembled by Tiy
the secondary team will have small updates each friday
gear is not limited to particular races
kyren is 30, has a wife, and owns cats
references will be kept to a minimum
aiming for starbound to run on sub 2.0ghz single core integrated video, but might not make it that low
it won't be any higher than a 2.0ghz dual core with modern intel or really old non-intel gpu
currently runs 60 fps 1920x1080 on a 2.4ghz dual core with an old discrete gpu
the lighting engine takes the most cpu, followed by drawing tiles and waiting on opengl
different races will have different building styles
kyren really wants computers in the game/make your own Z80 chip
kyren knows a ton of languages
combat video hopefully coming soon
the wiring system will be much more complex than terraria's, there will be crossing wires
may be dlc, but not for a really long time
would like to intergrate it with steamworks
will be based on private servers, but want to make it easier than minecraft/terraria
upnp automatic port mapping/reverse client/server connections/udp hole punching/auto port forwarding
the number of players on a server is mostly a question of bandwidth
32 players would need ~4-5 mbit upload connection
mods will be able to do everything ingame entities can do
hopefully on steam on all 3 platforms, though steam on linux isn't out yet
kyren's wife wants cats to be a playable race
the different team members are in 5 countries and 8 timezones
water will not be infinite, it will be destructable, but not creatable
water is very compressable
you can move while attacking
there will be charging weapons
the water balloon gun wil be a high level item
plenty of useless items
enemies explode into a million blood particles when killed
your character will learn how to craft things
haven't decided on how to make money post release, but it won't be evil
all races are playable
there will be a lot of silly items
they work 12 hours days
they want ingame achievements through steam

I read all of it. ALL OF IT! So good. Important things to note is that she said Starbound WILL be on Steam for sure, and that there will be a water balloon gun.

I got excited about the water balloon gun.

 

thanks a lot ! very interessant information, i am especially grateful about the wire system as im an electrician myself and loved doing circuits and systems in terraria and was planning on doing very complex mechanism in my HQ

ESPECIALLY the low-grade computer potential, because a friend and I were reallllly worried that we'd have to wait for Starbound because of our crappy computers but

Devs, please reconsider the lack of Creatability of Water... as a Glunaught, this News worries & distresses me!

Also, why did noone ask if Water can come in many colors?

 

maybe players should get the option to research moisture sucking machine that would create water from the atmosphere or technology that allow to gather oxygen and hydrogen to create water
