Closed Purchased through Steam, didn't know there were other options

From what I can see, for anyone who bought Starbound through the Humble Bundle page or through Starbound's own website preorders, they get the Steam access now, and they'll also have access to the game WITHOUT Steam when that becomes a viable option. My question is, am I out of luck on that Steam-free version when it comes along, because I'd made my purchase through steam?

If so, is there any way to get my hands on that without having to buy another copy or something? I'd really like to have Starbound without Steam attached to it, but I don't have enough money to justify a double-purchase of the game.

I wasn't actually aware that Starbound was being distributed in any way BUT Steam until after I'd made my purchase. That's obviously my own fault, but I'm still wondering if there's anything I can/need to do to be eligible for a Steam-free copy when that comes available.

I apologize also if this isn't in the right forum, but I figured "Billing" is the closest thing that this question relates to.

    You are not alone, Kirona!

I made the same mistake too when I bought Starbound today. I know it is my vault for not looking before I bought it on Steam.
Now I would also like to know if there is any chance to get a DRM-free version which is playable without Steam.

    Thanks in advance,
    Nithanim

I didn't know that this was a possibility until today, and I wish I had known about it. I would have bought it on the Humble Store instead. Now I'm stuck with the Steam copy. I'm wondering if there is a way I can get the game's key from my Steam copy and use it to redeem the game through Humble Store to get the version that doesn't need Steam, maybe?

Figure I'll post this here, though everywhere else I've posted it I've been eerily ignored :> Steam's DRM is a developer option only, not forced. So, devs could choose to turn of DRM if they pleased.. Here's a list of games on Steam that have chose to not enable the optional DRM:

So essentially, all I need to know is whether or not Chucklefish intends to have this option enabled when Starbound's finished? Cool, good to know :D

Especially since from what I can tell, they'll most likely not be using thatX3

Oh, the dev team stated already that the whole reason they went with Steam at all was for delivery of (frequent) updates, and after the update pace slows down they'll be offering a completely non-Steam DRM-free version :> When I mention them disabling the DRM most people just say "GO IN OFFLINE MODE.", but that's not exactly easy, and is counter-productive anyway :> When I have access to the net I go online, when I don't (and I don't always know when I"ll have access), I TRY to go into offline, but sometimes don't get the chance.. Internet service isn't just raining down for free for everyone on the planet :wut: Nor is gas money or vehicles to run to a library or McDonalds to get online and go offline with Steam :wut:

The problem being that it sounds like we who bought through Steam will have to buy the game a second time to get the non-Steam edition. Those who knew that it was being sold elsewhere get the Steam and non-Steam editions for the price of one copy.

Far as I know the DRM-free copy will be available to everyone that's already purchased :)

I am interested in an official response as well.
As soon as I saw it I just bought it on Steam, didn't even think to buy it through the official website... So now besides not getting a DRM free copy I also don't get the soundtrack as well...
I only want a DRM Free copy to play it off of a flash drive when I'm not at my normal comp.
I hope there is something that can be done, but I'm not holding my breath...

Not to mention offline mode still requires you to have Steam installed and running to play. Don't get me wrong, that's generally not a problem for me and I think Steam is an excellent distribution platform, however once Starbound is truly DRM free I can install it to a flash drive and play it at work on slow nights. No way to do that with Steam as I can't (well, can but shouldn't) install it locally to my work PC.

Actually dug back into some older forum posts concerning DRM and saw a couple of the coders state that the Steam version wouldn't have DRM :> Anyway, they made it very clear they aren't fans of DRM of any form on any platform, so the outlook is good :p

The game is DRM free at present (discovered this about a week ago). Copy the starbound directory to a flashdrive and run starbound.exe on any PC. If the PC has steam rename steam.exe so it doesn't launch when launching starbound (there may be a more elegant solution to this but it gets the job done). Just remember if you let a friend try it and they like it convince them to pay for the game. If it's for your own use only go nuts!

Yep, found out about this only recently myself :) I was only truly concerned about the DRM because my net service gets shut off pretty frequently (been having a run of almost decent luck lately though!)..

Even though this is a necro'd thread... it is more relevant than most...

You need Steam installed, and the key will appear on your Humble store account page. If you didn't get a key, there is a link at the top of (almost) every forum page.
