the problem is that the pre-order page states that the money will go directly to getting starbound done sooner. As far as I know, since then they only hired 1 extra developer, a modder.

why not hire more talented people to help them, i dunno, do what they said they would?

Thats mainly where the anger comes from.

I don't see where you're calling it unethical. They exceeded their funding target, massively so. Any funding after the target was up to their discretion on spending.

I'd just like to quote something I said earlier.

"Welcome to game development, an organic beast that usually devours some of the promises made. It's always easy to "plan" to do things, but sometimes they just don't work out in practice and you have to adjust and change the way things are done. I'm sorry that you were expecting everything to happen on schedule and in the way they said it would without anything being excluded or changed. Welcome to the real world, where things break and plans change. It's tough, I know."

Tiy has said it a couple of times already, everyone was upset that the small updates didn't give them enough content. They weren't happy with that approach, so now they're taking longer to do updates so they can pack in all kinds of content, and now people are calling them liars. You guys are ridiculous, lol. They stick to their promise, and people don't like it. They LISTEN to the community and want to give bigger content updates and people don't like it. What should they do?

Because they don't need to hire anyone else to complete the game. They hire all these new people to finish Starbound, and it costs them a lot of money. Starbound finishes, and now they have all these people who have nothing to do. Yeah they could put them to work on new projects, but eventually they're going to start spending more than they earn, it's not a smart move to just "hire more people because reasons". They aren't a company making tons of money every month to support a huge team. They need to plan years in advance, and they'll hire more people if they feel the need arises. The last thing they and we want is too many cooks in the kitchen.

Your mom has a fishy nature.

Yes, that was a blatant troll post and its only purpose is to start a flame war that will eventually get this thread locked.

I'll deal with any deserved repercussions because it would have happened eventually and I might as well do it on purpose now because nobody is listening to anybody else.

Starbound was in the top ten sales list of steam for more than a week, if the devs really did spend a lot of money on the games they publish, they wouldn't have asked us to kickstart them, the money for all other publishing costs can easily come from their steam sales.

Makes innocent yet still boneheaded comments: The thread derails or gets moved to Limbo or locked.

Purposely tries to get a thread locked: Stickied.

That perverse sense makes me happy and sad at the same time.

Time to take position on this, waited long enough to calm down and dereact to not be insultiv to anyone. I hope you do kinda the same.

Seems we are this time (kinda) on the same side dude, have to agree to what you previously said about the other games. Its like an advertisement you cannot disable. I cannot "block" those type of news, same goes for the news on the dog (in all honestly and I am probaly not only speaking for myself dont care at all for), I dont want to know that personal stuff from somebody I did a deal with, I want to know what progress was made on the product I purchased. Personally I really rather have something completly soulless and emotionless if the efficiency is much higher then somebody sharing everything with you on that type of "relation".

True that, much was said, but most of it wasnt kept. Just depressing kinda... If some of the comments the devs have done in the past would have been worded in a different tone alot of bad "assumptions" wouldnt have happened. Of course people are a bit oversensitiv, specially after what happened to certain other games... Really nothing to add to this in particular.

What I wish was a bit less one sided way of developement, that includes admitting mistakes. You guys are not unfailable, nobody is. Its totally ok to make mistakes, just stand to them and do not push them to others. No release dates because you failed in the past to give propper ones? Get better at it and then try again, if you dont attempt to improve then people have to assume things why you do not want to improve. Personally I demand from people I know only a few things and one of that is that they have to admit their mistakes and actually try to make better next time. Nothing bad with making mistakes, it wont ruin your image if you do them. If you however find excuses for them or give people room for interpretation then that will certainly hurt your image. And at some point... people wont believe you anything anymore, kinda sad but at some point alot of people resign... and just either go completly give up, try to hurt the cause of their frustration, try to actually fix the frustration or generally go enraged fully.

Using clear and well reasoned Forum Logic:

"Chucklefish isn't giving exact dates for their updates anymore. This is clearly because they are spearheading development for the Agaran invasion that will enslave us all and force us to develop Starbound instead. The women will have to serve Pina Coladas and learn Haskell, while the men will have to learn Haskell and serve Pina Coladas.

And with everyone a dev, there will be no one left to post in General Discussion!"

Meanwhile, they gave their reason weeks ago. But why let that get in the way of a good story?

And said reason seems to be an excuse of not trying to improve on the questioned topic, which would be release dates. Even if its an extremly rough estimate it would be better then nothing. By extremly rough I do not mean "This Decade" or a bit more accurate but still vague "This or next year". Trying to give a season and a year might be good enough for now. If that hits, then go next time for something more accurate. If that fails dont go and do no release dates again. Go try again, you slowly learn your working pace by that and learn to estimate yourself better...

As for now... I'll get off so really looking forward to see how this developes...

Those two terms are not interchangeable, no matter how much it seems like they are.

  19. Thanks for the well explained thoughts on the matter

I see where you are coming from. And in some ways, I can agree with you. But I really think we should strive to help Chucklefish with what disappoints us in a clear and distinct manner, without bringing an axe to the table, ya know? (not saying YOU in particular brought an axe).

I get where Chucklefish is coming from too -- and I understand where they are at as well. They're really between a rock and a hard place right now. They're relatively new to the gaming scene. They're making mistakes for the first time and learning how to fix them for the first time. Their expansion as a company has allowed them to take in a few other games under their wing to guide and help. It's a tough ability to refute -- the ability to help. They're trying to appeal to a lo of the demands of the community -- and while they can't always deliver, they're still taking hits and trying to do right by everyone. Take this recent business with how Chucklefish is now handling updates... it was the goal to do daily updates. They wanted to do this, they told us so. But the community didn't feel like the game was progressing -- so they asked for more massive updates. Now Chucklefish has too much in the update, and the amount of time to finish it is leaving people with a sense of abandonment. So now they're doing small blog-type updates on what they're working on. No matter what they do -- they're getting shot at from every direction. Chucklefish hasn't abandoned Starbound. They're not abusing any of the payment they've received for the game. They're trying to deliver to a variety of different community demands. They are trying to be a positive influence in the indie game scene. It's tough -- and they haven't thrown in the towel.

I wish they could tell us a release date too. But if they told us June 21st, and on June 20th they ran into some massive bug that they wouldn't even begin to know how to fix -- players would be devastated at a delay. They would feel abandoned. They would think Chucklefish LIED to them. A lot of them would even ATTACK Chucklefish because of it. They'd even do this if Chucklefish explained the ugly bug.

I mean... you can't please everyone. But as a company, as a professional , you have to at least attempt to. Chucklefish is trying.

    That said...

How can Chucklefish do better? What can we do to help them?

Personally -- I've worked on a game or two. Utter failures. I sympathize with Chucklefish. I wanted to become a moderator because I thought they needed help. I think what they could really use from us is patience more than anything. But maybe we could do more for them?

Sorry, I can be long winded sometimes.

Hehe I wouldnt bring in axe if I would bring a weapon ;) Also on a sidenote you and I seem to have a fable for writing wall of textes, kinda interesting to observe this.

But yeah, they made mistakes, they try to improve... a little. Recent happenings (banning a bunch of dissatisfied people on reddit and steam) werent helping the fact. And keep posting raged posts on twitter dont do either. If today some guy comes to me and claims some of my works are (sorry for that harsh word of mine but really cant sleep at all tonight) bullshit and gives me good reasons why I have 3 options: 1 Bring said weapon to the table and get him the fuck out of my face. 2. Ignore him. 3. Try to see what he sees, either see that I messed up something badly or if only partial of his accusations are right then try to find a compromiss solutions.

Easy thing to do here: Go with 3. Not with 1 or not with 2. 3 is the holy number, you should only count to 2 if you proceed to count to 3. You shoulndt either try and get to 4 which is wrong either. 3 is the only number which counts... enough pseudo monty python reference here.

Of course if some serious shit happens like... your example they say June 22 update and then they found a gamebreaking mechanic. They have virtually no other choice then delaying. Of course people will be upset, I can tell you that for good. I would be too. Specially if it was on a weekend. But after all they can say why: They can show the gamebreaking mechanic then, explain why it is so critical and crucial to fix and then most of the people are usually "satisfied". Shit happens, mistakes happen, nothing bad with that after all... specially with relativly complex work. But again admitting that they made a mistake is currently the most important thing I want them to learn. If they can admit a mistake they can learn better from it. They are not denying themself and denying people anymore. And I am pretty sure it will raise their product speed aswell, not to a level where I personally would be satisfied (kinda impossible) but to a point where I can say "Good pace.". But then again as you said... there are people even being pissed after explaining what happens... and that number grows... and only slowly... slowly decays. The less mistakes you make at the beginning of something the shorter you have to wear the consequences...

Also what do you actually think on the stance of "personal posts" like with that puppy. Nothing against puppies or that they want to have a dog, but this isnt exactly that type of news I was hoping for. I know there was news on starbound involved aswell... but the puppy was rather distracting from topic. Personal things to their privat twitter where people shouldnt know them by name... anything game related to the twitter on the forums. And maybe making sure that those privat twitters are hidden well.. I have seen people really stalking others they hate... literally stalking and gathering information...

But again I should probaly sleep instead since I clearly cant think clear atm, so round 2.

You seem to have the item "Orb of Confusion". If you hit somebody with your move Confuse ray they get confused for atleast 10 rounds.
