Protect your progress (play wipe update incoming)

Hey guys. Just thought I should share this with you so you don't lose all of your progress when the next update hits and could wipe all players from the game. As far as I know, putting your items on a planet that you can get back to within your universe is the safest bet you have to keep your progress.

In text here's what I've done. In the alpha sector, I've entered coords I can remember (0,0) and found a suitable planet for my item dump. I then built a little shelter with all my items that will be stored safely in the universe, rather than on my player or player ship, which could be wiped with the coming update. All I need to do when the update happens is get enough fuel to fly back to this planet located near 0,0 and get back all my high level stuff.

You can also remake/find the items that can't be stored straight from your character, all the star-maps, techs, and material usage upgrades (like rosium, ceruilium, etc.)

Share the video, make your own, get the word out so people don't lose their progress. (probably)

 

I assume by 'character wipe' they actually mean it will completely wipe all save files, including any planets you've been on.
I may be wrong, but that's what I figured anyway.

 

I think they will wipe everything. EVERYTHING. Since they are revamping the whole system of tiers and stuff, they need a wipe to restart it. So it wouldn't make sense to delete all the character items if it will work (as you suggest).
So basically the items will be revamped, and thus not working anymore, and thus requiring a wipe. Why would they need to wipe everything, if it would still work?

 

Why would this work? Why would it save data of your interactions with the worlds but not your inventory? It's probably not gonna save any of it.

 

The update will change every status of items, mobs and panets. There is no way to keep what you've done without breaking the universe apart.

 

Yeah, or it will create a space-time continduom and rip holes in the fabric of space and time. Or it could simply crash Starbound and you'd need to re-install it.

 

The information given on the mainpage says character wipe.. Not universe wipe. I'd rather be safe than sorry in this case. Besides, it takes all of 5 minutes to do this.

I was also listening to the twitch stream before the games release, Molly had said that there would be at least one character wipe, but that they were going to try to keep player and universe wipes separate so that people could protect their progress in this kind of way.

 

It might work if you run a server, save the world, then log in with a new character after the wipe, but even then I doubt it.

 

But it doesn't make sense. They said they are revamping the whole system of tiers and armor penetration, etc. thus making the items you aquired useless, if not crashing the game. Again: why would they have to wipe the characters items if those items will still work? Because in your logic, the items will still work even with the new system, thus making the wipe useless. So you either will crash your game if it will be not a universe wipe but a character wipe, or you will find nothing in the 0,0 planet and just waste your fuel. It's not a big deal to start over. Besides, with the new system most of your items will prove useless.

 

Maybe the player wipe will be due to something else, and the weapons will either conform to the new setup, or be deleted/useless. Either way, I'm just putting this out there as an option that may protect players items and progress. I'm not positive it'll work, but it's a possibility.

 

If you have weapons and junk in the chest. They will be revamped, why would they stay? Same goes for every chest in the universe. It will be a complete wipe.

 

People need to learn how to read. If you aren't prepared to lose all your stuff then you should rethink your decision to participate right now. Wait until it's more stable or the release. So many threads about people crying and it hasn't even been a week.

Can't wait to see all these desperate acts to save data become completely worthless and people have to start over anyway.

 

Jeez you guys are downers. I understand what being in a beta means, and this could all be useless, but neither you nor I know if it'll work or not work. So what's the harm? If I lose everything, I lose everything and will start again, without a complaint. But if it does work, then I get to keep some of my stuff.

 

Ha ha, you're more than welcome to try. My problem is people coming in and making thread after thread about a topic that was covered before the Beta even started. I'm sure there are plenty of people who read the word "Beta" as "I get the whole game early."

 

Why would you want to keep your stuff? They're revamping progression. It's the perfect time for people to start over.

Also, they are going to reseed the world due to the ores spawning in the wrong places which means = universe wipe.

Convoy is fine, and has been around a lot longer than I have on these forums. I think he/she understands now that I'm not some little kid who doesn't understand how betas work, just a guy who might possibly have some way to keep a few things from the previous players experience.

 

Not being a douche. I can understand people's frustration but this is something that wasn't a surprise or out of the blue. It was pretty clearly stated that events like this would happen. Just curious as to why people are so shocked and desperate to not have it happen.

People are more than welcome to try something if they think it will work, but I just don't want to give a false sense of security.

 

I can't change the title.. but I'm editing in a massive "POTENTIALLY USELESS EXERCISE" warning at the top. I don't think ending the whole first post with a probably is clear enough for most people.

But anyway, personally, I'm mostly waiting for the wipe, as it is. Gold quite hard to find as it is, and when you're playing with someone else, it's twice the materials you've to find to keep up with the equipment requirements. I'm looking forward to the ore redistribution more than anything else.
