Ships are cool and bigger ones are even nicer... but the cake of this update for me is that my character will finally be able to play as wizard (or sort-of)!

That's an easy fix though, all they'd need to do is expand the back with more motors into a fin shape and it would actually not look bad. from there they could elongate it maybe into like a sockeye salmon looking thing... idk would make sense as a fish progression...

There's not much difference. SCIENCE! is SCIENCE! regardless of its presentation.

actually, the difference between science fiction and science fantasy is that Science Fiction has a basis of truth to it, while science fantasy is completely separated from a basis of truth.

As evolution can explain things like an ape race more intelligent then us, a fish race with three eyes, and plants that thrive in space, this can be considered scifi.

Where as things such as a giant tentacle planets lean more towards the science fantasy. Yet....you could still argue evolution of an alien species for the giant tentacles.

    Thus...its Science fiction. =)

Now something like sharknado...that's more science fantasy. :giggle:

    I'm such a nerd... -.-

Even if there are scientifically explainable elements in Starbound, it's still too much a jumble of randomness not to be called science fantasy, which is a mixed genre that cannot be described as "not science fiction" or "not fantasy". It's both.

But if people are having hard time categorizing the Starbound setting I recommend watching Treasure Planet. That's one way to calm my disappointment over the game not leaning more towards the Robots&Lasers type of sci-fi.

The big problem is, like you say, its sort of a jumble in this game. There are scifi elements and science fantasy elements. But hell...its a game...have fun with it.

    Suggestions regarding ship upgrade:
    1) Customization over ship would be interesting if upgrades are functional (Faster travel speed or provide some form of help to players, ship owners or players in the same team)
    2) Customization allows players to may add ship parts to wanted area, could be adding engine to the head of the ship for instance.
    3) Players would have to choose over the variety of upgrade choices whereas there are limited number of updates available for each ship.
    4) As the game progress, maybe this game can slowly transformed into a space strategic game where capture over planet would be possible, if there is a public server (That will be so much fun, players can enjoy mining and exploring different planets and while some can fight over the others with ships battle (Where upgrade for ships counts).

I could go on for more, but let's see how starbound would evolve.

Many thanks again, nice game and great work team!

Thanks to Starbound, I can make space stations from purple dirt! As I run around space playing a Floran.

Quick trivia? Do you know why units of Broccoli are called spears? Because Floran.

That's really not bad man... But one important thing to keep in mind is to not make it feel like you are working your ass off for the resources. There really has to be a happy medium, other than that I agree.

I would suggest (if this is not already planned) that larger ships have a correspondingly larger fuel capacity and a higher cost for travel between systems.

It would also be nice if different player ships could also meet in the same 'map' above a planet and maybe dock together or at least teleport between one another. If player ships could dock at a space station then that would be pretty awesome.

Also I think it would be reasonably easy to implement ships which have 'layers' allowing movement through doors in background against the wall or through foreground exits, rather than expanding on a 2d plane alone.

As a matter of fact, I've already got a glitch vanilla ship modified so it has 3 layers, although currently this needs a tech to use the doors/exits leading across layers (a 'security ID key'). It also has upper/lower docks with horizontal hatch doors for possible future use ;) - http://gfycat.com/FamiliarNaiveEnglishsetter

I don't think with a bigger ship, I'd be less inclined to build bases. Having a home world is still great...specially if we can get our own npcs that don't have a chance of vanishing forever when we exit and reload our game. =P

I'm just waiting for barren planets to actual spawn before I make a base on a planet.
