I've been thinking about this for a while and i would like to see some kind of proffessions added to the game. Nothing major or gamebreakingly overpowered or such. Maybe stuff like alchemy to make potions and salves. Or tailoring to make unique vanity items. Maybe even enchanting\blacksmithing to upgrade your weapons or add augments. This would ofcourse have to either be limited to 1 or 2 per character and you'd be able to switch at will at any trainer or something similar, or have the ability to learn all at once(But i feel that would be too strong late game). Those are just a few suggestive proffessions, if anyone else have any thoughts or ideas please feel free to share.
This sounds like a great idea. Maybe if all the professions produced vanity items then it wouldn't need to be considered within the games balancing and thus be easier to implement, Starbound already has a ton of art assets and this potentially could add to it. If you start adding things in like upgrading or adding augments to the items it might either have to be on a small scale otherwise it could require a whole new balancing system depending on how it is done. An idea I've been toying with is maybe if they added in a certain amount of weapons that you could find that would normally be useless unless you have the materials to upgrade/augment them, this way they could implement the idea easily without needing to rethink the balancing structure.
If you think about it, the tier system is essentially a leveling system for all crafting, where the only way you can level up is to kill a boss. I think splitting it up into different skills you can upgrade by use (possibly also by reading or trading with other races for knowledge) would be very smart.
Hm is any levelling system ever going to be implemented i ask? I would love it but I am not sure this would work. The game would shift to one like a traditional RPG, not sure if it is what they want, or if it is what even me, loving that sort of thing, would want. It is intriguing non the less... Should we make it character bound or armour bound? (this is, bound to the armour the player creates) Edit - sorry but I didn't read the post previous to mine, i do believe indeed that the idea of getting knowledge from villagers to be a great one, so i urge you (not with the intention of publicising it) to go and see my thread on space stations/ports cause it could easily be complemented with your idea.
