Procedurally generated weather | Gravit-ators

This is a double post, containing two suggestions/questions. :)

    --Procedurally generated weather--

    If anyone here has played Just Cause 2 before, you know that rain doesn't simply "appear";

When the game generates a lot of clouds on a small space, the game recognizes the need for that space to start raining, and that was a really cool and sort of realistic feature.

So, my question is: Will Starbound have this sort of mechanic, or will it be like Minecraft, where even if there are no clouds in the sky, it will rain and (sometimes) thunder?

    --Gravit-ators--

Okay so, whoever has played Terraria raise your hand. Yep, quite a lot of ya out there.

Now, all of us have created a Hellevator once in our lives, right? They were used to send players, items and NPCs down to the core of the world (or close to it), and that was a really fast way of doing so.

The problem was getting back up. Without the grappling hook, it would be a real pain in the rear to get back up, and even with the hook, it would still take some time.

This is where "Gravit-ators" come in. A futuristic fan-like device that makes any object, player or whatever else go up at a relatively quick speed, depending on the planet's gravity force: The stronger it is, the slower the ascendence will be.

What do you guys and gals think? Is it a good idea, or should it just become a mod? Surely you'll even come up with a better name :p

I liked your ideia of the weather, but I don't think that could be implemented easily to the game because it is 2D, not 3D.

I doubt the procedually generated weather will work out because of 2d and all, but the gravitator sounds cool. Although a simple lift would suffice.

Also, just make two threads for two ideas so different. Noone's going to shoot you for it. Probably.

Are you suuure they won't shoot me?
Thanks, will divide threads in the future :)

It miiight be possible. I mean, take Minecraft as an example. Do you see how ridiculously complex mods make the game?
I can already sense Tiy around the corner, whispering "the engine could do it..." :p

Wait...what is Minecraft?Just kidding, but I think it would be better if the group could make a game that don't need mods at all. Because Minecraft is much "incomplete" than Starbound if you see

I agree. Minecraft is only playable with mods, at least for me. Tekkit all the way. It's why I really would like a power management system in the game - it would give you a reason to keep expanding your base beyond that certain point of "I've got all the crafting stations and farms I need".

I'm thinking it might be better to just go with teleportation devices. A gravity lift could have some cool implementations though, especially for traps. Talk? No Mr. Bond, I expect you to slowly float into the spiked ceiling.

As for weather.. it doesn't really need an underlying system more complex than looking at what the planet's atmosphere is supposed to be like and running it off a pattern or random chance ticks, really. I'm reminded of Star Control II where planets would have a temperature, atmosphere, and seismic activity variable each. Too high temperature and firestorms would be flying around on the surface, too high atmosphere and there'd be lightning strikes more often. A planet with Class 10 atmosphere was basically a planet-sized tesla coil with lightning bolts flying all over the place constantly.
