Procedurally Generated Guns

  1. Just a suggestion here,
But I was thinking, could we make our own guns? I mean, if each part of a gun is procedurally generated, then how hard would it be to relate every part of gun data with a crafting item? You could have parts like handles, barrels, scopes, etc, and every part would be in the new weapon when you throw it all together and craft it!

Also, as an added idea, if you find a gun that you like a part of, but the rest is junk, you could do what Team Fortress 2 does, and take the parts to build a new gun! That way, even guns that you don't want, or guns that you just like the look of have a use, and they don't fill up your inventory!

Also, If you craft a gun, then you should also be able to name it, and manufacture it! Then you can trade your favorite weapons with your freinds, or sell them to other starbounders!

    Also, this one's my favorite.

Algorithmically generated guns are an interesting thing, if done right.
Aesthatically, I'm kind of skeptical. Tiy said something about many combinations and this coming from a random pool.
But I already saw a few uniform things. Uniformity depends on the pool of parts, and the number of pools.
So, maybe they just didn't implement all designs they desire.

    Statistically, I haven't got a clue.

Making your own guns would maybe even possible with a third party program. (That depends on some factors though, like , how the guns and the inventory works).

That simply means that guns are made by an algorithm (a fixed, defined procedure, hence procedural).

I have a question about the guns.
It says that there are two types; ballistic and energy weapons.
Are there combinations of these types, like a rail-guns or something similar?

    Rail guns are ballistic weapons.

  5. Selpathor

But they require a large amount of energy to fire right?
So would they use energy as well?

That's the definition of an energy weapon?
Railgun use electromagnectics, so they do require a lot of energy to be fired.

That is exactly why I am asking this.
They require energy to fire like an energy weapon, but they fire a projectile like a ballistics weapon.
So what should it be considered?

A ballistic weapon that uses electrical energy for propulsion?

It depends on how in depth one would get into it. It could be something similar to red factions fusion rocket, except instead of using a rocket to fuse certain chemicals together, its fusing certain energies instead, then launching it.

Ofcoarse its possible for one to have a gun that uses both energy and ammo, I.E. i have energy charged rounds that require to be charged before/during firing, thus using up both energy and rounds.

It also depends on what type of railgun your looking at. In some games the railgun uses a battery pack, while in others uses slugs, or bolts instead.

It depends on the lore of the game for rail guns. While these weapons use massive amounts of energy to fire, a rail gun also needs to have the rails replaced every so often too, and they still fire a solid projectile. Unless the batteries in the game are the equivalent of miniature reactors, having the battery stored as part of the clip would be more practical, keeping them as a ballistic weapon. Another thing that keeps it as a ballistic weapon is that while the projectile is thrown without the use of chemical propellants, the damage done is by the kinetic energy of the projectile (Thou shalt not take Newton's laws in vain.)

Energy weapons would be more throwing sheer wattage at a target, or causing some sort of electrical change in the target, like a taser, laser, maser, EMP, even certain plasma weapons could fall under this category if they cause the atmosphere in front of the target to ignite, rather than forming a packet and firing it.

Though this is just me spitballing and trying to apply a little analysis as if these things were real.

i doubt things would be so convoluted. tiy probably said that only as far as ballistic weapons shoot slug, no matter how, and energy weapon shoot energy and stuff.
so anything that propels lead or a physical object toward a target to harm it would be ballistic while laser, maser, plasma, EMP and all that fuzz would fall as energy weapon.

so to answer to your question, railgun fall as ballistic weaponry. maybe draw on your batteries a bit if tiy is so inclined but i doubt it

edit : damn, konoku beated me to it

The guns are looking great, they said this is only a few of them! This is gonna be crazy when someone is walking around with one of the endgame flaming banana peel launcher with added cupholders, a lighter, a smartphone, and a scope with a shotgun attached (no, not the other way around). And then even after that you can be in their house with a TV/pizza oven/chair/couch.

soooo what do flamethrowers fall under? energy or ballistic?

    Awesome O.o

I do hope that when determining the level from the stats, it takes into account the weapon type. For example, bullet spread can be good on shotguns, but for more precision weapons it would be a negative.

Well, maybe there would be a hybrid class, also depending on what is used to make the fire (i.e. a lighter or a laser). If you're thinking of a flamethrower like in TF2 it would be ballistic because there is a lighter at the tip of the weapon and an extreme air current (think of it like a fast fan blowing a fire). If it was energy there would be some kind of laser in the weapon that burns something and then shoots it out, I don't really know much about the laser flamethrowers because they're more of a futuristic weapon.

Pretty sure you guys are over-thinking this Ballistic/Energy thing.

Energy Weapons: Lasers/Electricity/Plasma, basically anything you can charge with an energy pack.
Ballistic Weapons: Anything that needs bullets, bolts, arrows, stones, pebbles, rockets, grenades, etc.

Pretty sure a flamethrower would use "fuel" and not drain your energy meter. Or maybe your energy meter is relative to how much fuel you have for the flamethrower, but whether it's technically ballistic/energy weapon or not is moot.

From what I gather category only matters as far as what goes into the gun, so there's no use trying to over-think it.

wowzers.. this game is going to be 9001 kinds of amazing.

I am loving the gun styles, some have that kind of futuristic look but others also have a bit more of a traditional look to them. They're all Just awesome and imaginative. :coffee:
