I think that he's think about minecraft and terraria, where it takes a while to get quality armor. It would be great in this game if you could make armor out of anything you wanted, even wood and dirt. These wouldn't be any good though.

Precisely! The name of the mats (wood, iron, dirt, etc) are irrelevant with this system. What would matter would be the stats on them, which would dictate whether something can be made or is worth making into armor, weapons, etc.

I edited the OP with an example of how I could see the game having an option to show simple mats and advanced mats that you could change on the fly.
The simple mode would show you icons of the most commonly important stats. In this case, the icons are showing that the material floats in water, it's good for temperature insulation, and it's flammable:

devs really arent saying much yet the second screen looks reasonable though

I don't know if they reply or even see these forums but it'd be cool if they gave their official word.

actually on the main forum screen youll see peeps online as well as moderators and occasionally youll see the devs logged in they have replied to me via private message when ive poked em so they are here and looking. My guess is the game engine is a bit more developed and a lot of the inital release might be in , cant be 100% on that. So suggestions might come into play for patches and expansions

Ehhh...I'm going to be honest, I don't really like this idea.
First of all, Durability has already been confirmed that it will not exist

Great idea, just trim down on the variables so I don't feel like I'm playing Dungeons and Dragons because I'm so confused.

I say the only biggest variable in DND was its skills which made sense.
OT: Still not sure how I feel about holding an entire castle in my backpack...

I've never seen that but even then, the point of this thread is to change just that.
    Hehe
That's the reason I think it'd be cool to have a "simple" and "advanced" mode. For those not interested in the nitty gritty variables and numbers, the simple mode would give them the necessary info to craft but for those who would like a more in-depth crafting, they could always use the advanced mode.

I'm not sure if you've seen the screenshots or the single video, but it seems that we'll be carrying not just a single castle in our backpacks, but several.

Simply erase Durability, easy enough. Also you could state why you don't like the idea, you know, to give feedback and all :p

Servers should have the option to be set in "Simple" or "Complex" mode, quite simply, so you could choose your playstyle. I really think this idea is a must for the game, otherwise visiting lots of planets starts to get boring if all the materials are the same.

I think more than it being server-side, I was thinking this option could be client-side and the underlying mechanics of the materials wouldn't change, only how they are presented to the player.

    I guess that's also a good idea.

    Awesome idea!

I think your all kind of missing an important thing here... materials may not even exist in starbound like they did in say, terreria. Most production comes from a manufacturing facility on the space station... so i would think twice about the whole concept of having "Materials" at all.

Well it simply seems over-complicated. I'm fine with having a few things, but all of those variables for every material would be just too much.

Uhm, devs are considering the idea in the compilation, and by the look of videos, in which you could see stacks of 1.000 of blocks, yeah, it seems it will be pretty compatible with this idea ^^

You don't even have to include all of those variables. The point is that every planetary material should be slightly different, even if there are tendencies towards what we would call "wood", "iron", or whatever. I really don't think it is incredibly complex, and the depth that it would add to the whole building aspect of the game is really, REALLY worth it.

Hmm, well the thing is that in my list of ideas I have 'variant/procedurally generated planets' which basically means that all planets would have a different climate, species living on them, etc. all the way down to materials, since Starbound is obviously not a one-planet game and I think traveling to multiple planets to get all the materials you need for one thing is feasible.

  18. Drithyl

    Drithyl Phantasmal Quasar

The problem with having standard materials and planets in which not everything is available is that there would be times where you'd have to look around several coords to find whatever material you need. I'm fine with having every material type being available in every planet (maybe excepting very rare ones), as long as they're procedurally generated so that each one retains its uniqueness.

"and I think traveling to multiple planets to get all the materials you need for one thing is feasible."

    ????
Starbound is definitely not a one-planet game.

I'm sorry, did I misunderstood something? If you were a bit more specific than "????", it would help, you know :p
