Considering worlds will be all different, but following a theme; how about various vegetables like roots or above ground plants, and fruits hanging from trees. Randomly coloured and put together from maybe a collection of body and stalk parts, and occasionally having randomised, temporary effects.
With this one could take samples back to grow elsewhere or introduce new types to a planet. It'd also give some life to the herbivore (if they aren't just omnivorous) animals wandering around.

Not completely sure if this classes as items specifically or planets & environments more.

This is a good idea. Different biomes (planets) could produce different produce and it sounds like it could fit in with what the dev's are doing already.

i like this too but the only problem could be that your inventory will fill up quick with all the delicious space fruits and vegetables maybe they could stack in a square called fruit or veggies and then when you click it, it would expand into a window with all the different alien fruits and veggies.

Oh possibly. But to collect all a planet's fruit and veggies might add to the planet's value and make you want to return to it to find the rest.

You could still work it, but they would have to reconfigure the way the recipes are a little, which could be a pain. Essentially you just make it so that recipes dont require specific fruit to craft, rather fruit with specific characteristics(flavor, sweet or sour, texture). So a recipe that requires a pineapple could have a fruit that is merely similar to a pineapple subbed in instead, for example. Seems like a lot of effort at this stage though, considering the work for the recipes is done already.

As for the idea at large, I love it! :D

i love it too; i want super cool fruit too but you make a wonderful point; when they added race descriptions they had to add around 4000 or so new descriptions; imagine making a new recipe..wait..what if ya kept all the old fruit but simply added the procedural system? and made random alien foods through that? seems like less work and you wouldn't have to change anything. just add new recipes that fit the strange alien fruits in the way you described?

I'm fairly certain this will already be in the game.

I really like this idea, but I'm pretty sure it would mean that the crafting system would have to have recipes that simply require "Fruit" or "Vegetable" as ingredients. I dont know how simple something like that would be to code, if it doesn't already exist.

the game edge of space does something like this with all of their crafting it's kind of interesting... like to make a certain piece of armor you need some metal, some minerals and maybe a specific metal, say, aluminum.

Can't tell you how much I love this idea!
Fruits/vegetables could have basic categories for recipes, so it isn't that difficult to implement.
A type of corn that grows on one planet or another planet could be used in the same recipes, for instance.

    Love it, loveee it.
