Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I have been having a problem with outlaws. Whenever they surrender they just turn into normal townspeople. Is this a bug?

No way, the surrender outlaw I know usually call for more men

There is a chance for outlaws to fake a surrender and call for men, but usually they ask to join your crew. the two I've confronted surrendered and turned into normal npcs.

I've had the same thing happen before, with a Glitch outlaw.

Had to do a bunch of quests for him after just to get him to join... he was still considered an outlaw by the game though I think.

Outlaw crew have black uniforms, vs. red for soldiers. So that's how you can tell. Personally I've never got an outlaw, they always end up as soldiers for me. Not sure whether there's really any difference besides the color though.

What I like to do is when an outlaw wants to "surrender" I keep hitting them until they are almost dead before I put my weapon away. If they surrender surrender, they don't die. If they fake it, I kill them immediately because they have no health, then I deal with the goons.

Outlaws can have shotguns(or at least according to the wiki)

I got one of them to join me after giving me a quest, but he was considered a medic

Well they are outlaws, so don't expect them to play by the rules.

    You've got a point there.

I can confirm as this just happened to me. I was fighting a cute gir... I mean an outlaw but I wanted her to... join my crew! Yes! I left her with just a little bit of HP and she turned into a normal NPC like described above. Can any of the other occurrences here confirm if they were using a mech at the time or not? I used the mech to see what it was like. Turns out a sniper rifle is not that effective against mechs. I was wondering if the mech was the cause of the issue. Ol well, time to wait for a bunch of quests, I guess.

UPDATE: Finally did enough quests to crew-ify the lady. Went from Outlaw to Janitor.

You're lucky. Whenever the outlaws surrender for me, I get surprised and start to get out my matter manipulator so I can recruit them, but I'm always too slow and they start to attack again. I woulda hired you, buddy!

This bug seems to have started during the 1.2 update. For me they would more often turn into a villager than a normal soldier, though they more often behave properly, becoming an outlaw or calling back-up; but they would never be an outlaw after having been a villager.
Considering that I have observed this before mechs I would guess that it could be related to any mods we have installed that add new crew type; I use one that I made myself and I believe I made some time arround update 1.2.

Is your crew to ship size currently full? it seems like you have to regain them if it is

That's exactly what happened to me, however it was the update before mechs. I started to recruit them through quests, so now I have a chemist, two engineers, a mechanic, and a soldier who all used to be outlaws.

    I do not use mods.

There was only one person in my crew.

Does anyone think that they may have been removed?

No; I even have one on board my ship right now.

I'm guessing this a problem for everyone because I've been having the same problem since before 1.3 too.

I think it is definitely broken. I just forced an outlaw to surrender and instead of turning into a civilian or what they should, an outlaw, they turned into a soldier. A straight soldier. Immediately.

so the only 2 times they surrendered, and I let them live, they one-shot me with a rocket launcher.

edit: to clarify, the only 2 times I let an poutlaw surrender.

@Jake9039 a tip, when they try to surrender, keep hitting them till they are next to dead. When they are on the edge of death, then accept their surrender. If they truly give up then they will turn to "not bad guys" and if they don't, you can finish them off relatively quickly. Watch out for those rocket launchers because they do stupid amounts of damage.
