It would be pretty disgusting if they did that to be perfectly honest, and would only hurt their sales.

I'd like to pay around 20$, but for the Dev's sake I could go higher :3

I'd pay any reasonable amount of money... $20 seems fair to me right now, but I will want to pay more after we can see all the great stuff coming to the game!

Everyone seems to agree that 20 dollars will be the price
Unfortunately that would be 20 pounds in the UK if released on Steam

Im sure it would be 15 pounds via steam

Unfortunately Steam does this lovely thing where they don't charge different numbers depending on location. 20 here is 20 anywhere, and 20 Dollars is certainly not 20 pounds.
My friends complain about this quite a lot for some games

I do not understand why just because a game is Indie it should be stuck to the $20 price tag. You can say that they dont put the same amount of effort into an indie game as a Triple A game all you want but when an indie game like terraria can keep me entertained for well over 100 hours. Im sure its worth a $60 price tag. I never judge the price of a game based on who its made by. If Activision can charge $60 for Modern Warfare for a map pack, why cant a company like Chucklefish charge $70 for a game with more content than Modern Warfare 2 and 3 together?

I felt bad enough buying mount and blade warband for the $15 i paid. Same with terraria. I just got so much out of both games they were easily each worth more than what they sold for on steam.

You realize they want a lot more people to buy this game?
If it was 70$ I don't think as many people would buy it.
They said they wanted to make the game affordable to almost everybody.

Yep I get that. I am just stating my wonder on why people -expect- it to be 10-20. Why I feel it could be -worth- a full price like that. :3

i think he doesn't actually want the game to be 70$, but rather he is concerned about the amount of people that wouldn't pay more than 20$ just because it is an indie game.

While it's true that judging from the features that have been announced the game would be worth $60, people just aren't going to pay that.

And someone earlier mentioned Modern Warfare and the like being $60. A development team for an entire division of a company has to work on a blockbuster title like that (or Skyrim, or what have you) for years, in some cases. The graphics are cutting edge, etc. It simply costs a lot to make those games, and people are going to buy hits like those regardless of price.

An indie game like Starbound, while being chock full of content and having its own quirky style, simply did not cost as much as a big game like one of the aforementioned to produce. While we like the 2d graphic style, it wasn't as difficult to implement as, say, the Crytek engine is. There's no advertising costs here, while companies like Bethesda or EA have to recoup that.

I say all this just to agree with what's been said earlier in the thread; the game will probably sell for $10-$15. I would gladly pay more for it, but as was also said earlier in the thread, most people won't. The majority of people will hear about this game for the first time when it hits Steam on the first day (that's how I found out about Terraria, after all, and Terraria's Steam News section is how I found Starbound) and, knowing nothing about the game mechanics or even what the game is, won't give it a second look if the price isn't right.

It does cost a lot to make those games! I understand that. But when I am buying a game i like to look at what im buying. What i will get from it. If I may get less than 40 hours of playability out of a $60 game the chances are, i wont buy it. Thats more than a dollar per hour of entertainment. I am very hesitant to buy singleplayer games anymore due to this. Some have too little replayability to bother with.

I am just trying to say, i do not see why indy games are stuck at a $20 price tag. If the game is fun, enjoyable, and -lasts- then i would not mind the p urchase despite what they put into it. If you spent 40 minutes coding a game that keeps many people entertained for more than 100 hours. More power to ya! You should be able to sell that 40 minutes of code for a good sum.

I buy things that serve a clear purpose. Not because of the material they are made up of. I would not buy a glass arrow. I would prefer to buy a steel arrow -because it can surve its purpose-. One use and its spent is not something i would like. Sure itmight be pretty, but thats all it is. That steel arrow might not look as good, but it will last longer than one shot.

The topic is more than just black and white like this but this is how i usualy go about buying things. It still makes me feel bad when i buy a game for as little as 15 bucks and get 200+ hours out of it. In these cases i usualy buy more copies and give them to my friends who never would have tried it because it didnt look like their cup of tea.

Just because there isnt as much dev costs in a game like terraria doesnt mean it couldnt ever be worth a price tag like 60 or more. I am glad we get games like Skyrim where so much is spent in the art department. But that doesnt mean 'indie' games cant be worth the same price :) Though now i think im spent. I will just end up reiterating myself even more, hah.
