You ignored the point of the argument. You can't just skip deadlines like they're just checkpoints. When you have 87k people with nearly 2 million 'funded' to your bank account then when you say something then 87k people are going to be listening and expecting answers when things go awry and they don't have a game in front of them. We're talking about a beta release here, not a full release. People are expecting bugs, crashes, and etc. That is the implication of a beta.

Where has the last 6 months of development gone? Doing pixel art for a robotic horse? Most people who are criticizing the developers are doing so because of the extremely poor way they have handled themselves. Instead of making a post about where the game is in its entirety, they make a post about how delaying a game makes it better. That is essentially saying 'Yeah, we really suck at time management, but it'll probably be really good once we release it sometime in the next 10 years.'

I am done arguing. I've stated my feelings and trying to create a productive discussion here is the equivalent of trying to discuss philosophy with a brick wall.

I would like to point out that Overgrowth is a terrible example to use really. If I payed for overgrowth now, I could PLAY it, I could mess around with the engine, see what features are in the current build first hand. I cannot do this with Starbound yet. Jus' saying, if you really want my feeling on this topic, see my huge post back in the mid 50s range of pages.

I absolutelly agree with that. Many fans here tend to become absolutelly blind. Most blindly say "yes yes i wait as long as need". I will see you write this again in 10 years again. I dont think this game take so long, but i interpret "as long as needed" includes even if its like 10 or 20 years. Dont lie yourself. Not every decision is correct. And yes, this includes the devs. They are not perfect as we are not. But fans tend to completelly and blindly agree with everything, so fascinating by the game. be more constructive and ask more questions.

The decision not to release like MC or KSP has its downsides. The community can only tell if something feels like it should feel when i played the game. If you work so long on the game and want to make it perfect, while the community have no chance to confirm it, it maybe many month of work was for nothing, because 90% dont like it.

Read this today, at work, meant to post once i got home but....I drank some beers instead!.

Spot on with the indie dev' issue, it is teams like that, that do bring new ideas and mechanics to games.
I've personally very much loved the past few years or so, where indie game developers have started getting the 'limelight' once again.

Totally understand as a player and somebody who would absolutely love to create a game one day.

Personally, I'm able to wait, hell I came back to these forums after so long just to see what was the current activity!.
Seems I picked about right a time as any :)

Minecraft worked with the pre-order to buy into alpha state (as i did).
BUT, this rarely happens to be a strong and positive outcome in the grand scheme of things.
It happened with MC as it has with many games prior to and after.
My point is, it may have been something of a blessing with Starbound for an 'alpha' release, it may not have been.

There's still time, I'm sure everybody working on this title is crapping the proverbial brick, as the year comes to an end.
I am of the older gamer generation, beta meant a pre-release state of the game.
Today, you get people expecting beta to be final, there in has grown this grey area of 'beta' meaning a pre-release or meaning "you get early access for X moneys!"

Some dev's just decide to cash in early, others stay true to their word and work on it WITH the community.
That is what i will hope the ladies and gentlemen will adhere to at chucklefish (why is that considered a typeo?!).

You said beta will be released this year.
I really hope it is, for better or worse.
Cause you know that most of us with an attention span longer than a meme will play it till our eyes dry up, all the while taking notes.
Report back and help as best we can.

Would it be considered rude of me to think of this as you dev's holding onto starbound like a child?.
You dont want the world to see it's true nature till you feel it's 'perfect' ?.
Nor have it bare all to the harshness of the world?.
Point here is, you lot might really be blind to bugs/glitches etc that we may well pickup on day one.

You've spent so long with it that you yourselves may have become accustomed to how it plays you, not how you should play it.

Honestly I'd be happy with a buggy game thats in beta status to mess around with, its BETA, so expect bugs and issues, that will get fixed over time. If the beta is good the final product will be better :). Plus you'd have tons of testers just waiting with drool coming down their mouths to try the game and break things. There are alot of bugs that internal testing just can never find. For example Pokemon X/Y have a game breaking bug nintendo missed, in this one town if you save near a taxicab as its moving or parked, when you load that save again all you'll get is a black screen forcing you to delete your save and start over again, because it will never load the map again on that save.

My best friend in games likes to jump all over the place and try to get into spots he is not supposed to, had some fun with that in city of heroes and such when he somehwo would glitch into spots by jumping all over.

Guy's im going to be honest here. Go play Terraria... They are releasing frequent content updates, and T2 which will most likely be playable before startbound is going to have many of the same features your looking for.

Oh *place name of the son of whatever god you believe in here*!.

Please, we as gamers have the 'smarts' about us to go play, also going by the starbound steam group, alot still play terraria.

I'm sorry, I just have to jump on this, not as some "starbound is be all end all" fanboy.
Damn, if T2 was/is released before SB, chances are it's still the original game, just modified.
I loved Terraria, and it still holds a special place in my gamer heart.
I'm just so glad, that starbound is sci-fi, it's all kinds of goodness!.

I understand the team behind Terraria now, did state a forthcoming sequal.
But just sit back and checkout the crap chucklefish have gone through, it's taken some big ole balls/ovaries to get this far.

I look forward to T2, I really do, but for me, my main course is Starbound and holy hell, i'm going to enjoy every last spoonful, yummy yum!.

I find this post worrying. For a few reasons, some of which have been adequately represented by others. The main issue I believe, is that the game is pretty fleshed out, and there is a lot of 'Bloating' going on such as the dynamic description system, which in my opinion is definitely a 'could have' on anyones MOSCOW planning chart. As such I am worried that you guys are adding and adding to this bloating by adding unneccessary secondary features that really don't add anything substancial to the game-play except of course polished 'Cussioning'.

And ofcourse as others have pointed out, yes indeed please polish the release, but we are past time for a beta.

    Thanks.

Except it hasn't BEEN 10 years. You and several others need to stop acting like it has been 'cause you're blowing it way out of proportions. This isn't Half Life 3. Starbound was announced about a year and 8 months ago. Considering the size of their dev team and that they've already mentioned they're trying to get everything ready for beta, they're making pretty good progress.

Chucklefish's dev team isn't exactly large so things will take time, that much is understandable. You seriously expect they're going to tell you every single little detail they do day in and day out? As I've already said previously, it's ignorant to assume you know what they're doing, because you don't. For example, they're not going to talk about network protocol (likely) because most people probably don't even know what that is. Most people are wanting to know what's IN the game as opposed to how the internal mechanics work. On the occasion they have on request, but not often.

Also, have you even been following their daily posts? They've talked about a LOT of features that they've added. One of the more notable ones was getting the quest system up and running.

Now, if they do fail to meet that "By the end of 2013" marker that they've openly promised, then yes, there's a problem. If it does take several more years, then yes, there's a problem. If they do start openly piddling around with their time and not doing work, yes, there's a problem.
Is it at that stage yet?
    NO.
And so I will say again- stop acting like it is at that point, and stop acting like you know what's going on behind the scenes.

Also, there are a few discussions here and there, but they suffocate pretty quickly in the sea of vinegar.

I'll recap again at 100 pages if need be

Edit: forgot the white knights coming in every time someone writes a well thought out summery of their opinion and screaming NO THAT'S NOT HOW YOU FEEL! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY GO THROUGH, I'M HAPPY! ARE YOU HAPPY!? honestly, you're more annoying than the angry mob, stop trying to tell people how they feel it's really annoying.
