Certainly a lot can be transferred through text, being a writer/poet/lyricist myself I work to make my words as clear as I can possibly be while attempting to convey my emotions that way. I do not, however, claim to be a mind-reader, and I have had many instances in the past where someone said something and I misinterpreted it and I strive to avoid that - people don't like to be misunderstood, same as me. I would rather read what is there and be wrong and have to ask for clarification then to assume anything.

As for suggestions there is a forum for those if you wish to offer something. :) As for seeing core mechanics...I am not adept at code, you could throw code at me and I'd stare at you like you'd lost your marbles if you wanted me to try to decipher it. I'm a game player...not a game maker, which is one of the reasons why game developers get such respect from, cause I would like to make games, but I have neither the coding talent nor the patience to do what they do.

And yes, I always expect the worst, always. Most of the time it turns out that way too. lol In many instances though I will give something the benefit of the doubt.

Why are people getting so upset about an upcoming delay when in the first paragraph Tiy assured the beta will come this year? :/ The only thing that bother me is why address this now and not at the time the delay in the release date was decided.

And about the fluff... People almost constantly say that the latest updates are pretty boring because they are indeed about core mechanics but most of us disregard them as "meh" because they don't offer almost anything new other than "we've been working of the same mechanic over and over because... you know, it takes time" and are mostly attracted by the screenshots and not by the text that is where the real update lies.

There was one post, I replied agreeing. Damn those 3 sentence grammar discussions! By posting again and criticizing you are fanning the flames and going to increase the size of the fire. My post wasn't only a comment on grammar, but also a look at the difficulty of the general discussion on this thread. If you post something that is negative or critical towards the developer then you're immediately dog piled by fan boys, and it makes it impossible to argue or discuss opinions in any creative or meaningful capacity.

As I said in one of my earlier posts, it seems more like he was trying to soften the next delay announcement by giving some explanations and a a lot of nice words.

I for one, enjoy seeing core mechanics updates, it shows that the game is getting it's... well... CORE ( you know, the bit about how the game plays and all) Worked on. Although granted, I'm not a adept enough to do much or understand all of it, I would rather read a dozen pages of minor tweaks and core updates then just see a page with.. well... fluff that was being worked on to keep people occupied and content that the game is progressing.

Core mechanics isn't all code, you know. It's a mechanic, so it has to manifest in the world in some way. And this is far easier to show, not only to coders, but for, well, anyone.

Far as coding go, it's real easy, like writing a poem or something (because of somewhat limited form of conveying your thought, normal story writing does not apply), which you as a writer should understand perfectly fine. You just need to start, to learn basics of the language you will try to speak with computer and to not shy away from it for the time required for you to get a grasp of it. So, same thing as with drawing, sculpting, crafting stuff and even washing dishes.

How am I adding to the fire? The way I see it, I'm snipping an off topic discussion in the bud before it blooms. I'm sorry you misunderstood my intentions.

I haven't seen all of the daily updates, but as I said, most of them I've seen are like this:

"Look guys, we've been working of this core things (or at least I think terrain generation, physics and proper tiering are core) and... LOOK AT THIS TEASE, LOOK AT IIIIIIIIIT!!!!"

Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

That wasn't going anywhere, none of us intended to do it. And now there's six posts about it instead of two.

They are, and that's why I would rather have a full change log to dig through, but that would take up time and resources for them to create, so i have ( for the most part ) Accepted that i won't get a nice long log to read though and try to dissect.

Just ignore me then. It's really quite simple. In my eyes I saw it going on randomly so don't think anything of it.

Because he didn't assure us that the beta will come this year. After several months of a unified front of devs saying that beta is happening in 2013 "no matter what", now it's suddenly a 2013 "estimate" followed by a diatribe about how game delays actually make everything awesome.

I have a really hard time reading this as anything other than "look, we still want to get beta out this year but maybe we won't and it's because and if we don't it's because we're SIMPLY TOO AWESOME TO MAKE DEADLINES."

Blah blah blah People want different things. If this is some kind of prelude to a (Beta delayed to 2014) then w/e, simple fact is these guys have 0 business acumen. What is he even trying to achieve with this post? sympathy? The guy is sitting on nearly 2 million and i have scarcely seen any posts saying "We are using the backing money for this .. this and this" Although i have heard him "moving house" yeah i know where the money is.
Stick to deadlines everyone else in the working world has too and most don't have the great opportunity of making their own. So yeah that's my piece, but i'm going to give them the benefit of doubt and see this post as just "LOOK AT HOW HARD I'M WORKING, IT'S BETTER THAN ALL THOSE MAINSTREAM GAMES, LIKE ME!!"

Physics yes, but terrain gen and tier tinkering are mostly non-core related. And there wasn't much about physics lately, big core physics things I saw were sand and liquids physics as well as explosion physics. Other than that I can't think of anything right now. Unless adding a double jump required a physics update, which I see as, like, wrong, man.
Last core terrain gen update was on 13th, and most prior to that was fluffy fancy custom rooms/caves that were added.
Tiering is a whole another level, see. Tier balancing has almost nothing to do with core, it's all content accessibility, aside from tiering of materials, which I believe has been done already for a while. Now tiering is setting loot pools and weights at the correct values, that's about it, the system's long in place.

I don't know if others feel the same, but I'm primarily bothered by everyone getting to play Starbound other than the people that bought it.

Given that playable, though not "finished" versions have been sent to game reviewers, and played at conventions, it really does seem like the people that paid for the game should have received something by now.

While I think most programmers would agree that arbitrary deadlines are a bad way to determine when to release software ("it'll be released when it's done" is a popular phrase), I doubt most would approve of a "keep adding features when you're far behind schedule, and release someday, maybe" development model, especially if the developers are getting paid already via preorder. For a widely practiced alternative see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Release_early,_release_often

As someone who ended up generating a whole feedback thread after I49 full of people who felt the same... That also protested Molly locking a discussion thread on a possible demo: I think I can safely say you aren't alone in that opinion.

Not sure if I completely agree with the rest completely though (deadlines can be useful), but on that. I hear you and you aren't at all.

He says in the first paragraph "This news post isn’t written as a precursor to an upcoming delay." And is saying that they are still very sure itll come in 2013, the only thing I don't get is why they are telling us about alot of bug fixes, which defeats the purpose of a beta. They seem to think people want a bugless perfect beta that resembles the full game. When you look at games like overgrowth, in its early beta, thats exactly what it was. Full of bugs and not finished.

Well, to be honest, the bugs they can find and fix themselves are probably fat enough to not require community to find them, I'm totally fine with them fixing those - less repeated reports for the poor bugtracker system.
    And Overgrowth's in alpha, no?
