I'm actually amazed how people think Minecraft got better with updates.
The last update to Minecraft I consider to be good is Piston update, when Mojang reimplemented a popular mod into the game - that allowed a whole batch of new game mechanics and builds at least. The very last good thing added was a jungle biome. All that came later, aside pre-modding-API stuff like configurable NBT tags for most of the things, are just making it bulkier, making it to make less and less sense inside of its blocky reality. The only things that keep minecraft afloat now are mods, pretty much - those get progressively more complex, enjoyable and rewarding as time goes on, and those are the thing that keep me playing Minecraft.

Gah! Video games ARE art! I pity the ignorant soul that, through shallow elitism or whatever else closes its mind, does not consider games to be works of art.

I've never waited this long for a game before, but It's not that big of a deal really. I'm getting a little like "How good could it really be? Am I going to spend more time waiting for this game than actually playing it?" but I'm trusting Tiy's word that I won't be disappointed. =D

Remember then, that most of the art known to man is created under the pressure of some kind. There was no such thing as "Oh, Michelangelo, take as long time as you want to finish your masterpiece The Creation Of Adam". That shit was paid for, there were standards. There was backlash upon missing deadlines. And a harsh one for that matter.

Look, I have to admit the only real reason I am willing to wait is because I'm a fairly new pre-orderer, and don't se the other side's point.

I know I am. I am waiting for two years. There's almost no way there won't be anything that will interest me more than Starbound in the next two years, just look at what new Everquest is supposed to be, and that is probably coming out next year. Two years down the line is bound to happen something that will blow Starbound out of the water.

Ahem... Without looking at the posts following the initial report I will give my opinions generally and I would like at least 1 person to rate me on a scale from one to ten on how accurate I was.

They are not BSing us so they can cancel production and waste the money we preordered with, you douchebag. He says that in the post and if you had some common decency and belief in your fellow man(Not to mention some braincells) You would suck it up, be patient, and stop demanding some date, even if it's the 31st of decemeber.

I agree with the first guy and say you guys take as much time as you need(As dissapointing as delays can be ) and thanks for constantly being on here, giving us updates, even if they are rather minor, and generally being awesome at your job. A majority of us are just glad there are still people in the video game industry that give a damn about the art as opposed to making money.

1,000+ messages, guys? realllly? you have this much s'plaining to do, lucy? (for the record, you may take that as 'explaining' or 'complaining' each which equally fits within this thread.) stop explaining the joke, they probably got it-

    but what if they didn't-
    oh, I don't know

Ah, anyway. I noticed Starbound a while back, when the Novakids had just been met as a stretch-goal, and I was without cash to burn, so I sorta just kept it in the back of my mind. Cue me, buying it early this october, with the notion that 'beta is this year'. I'm kinda between amused and annoyed by all the people angrily running through this place screeching: "THEY'RE GONNA PUSH IT BACK; JUST LOOK AT THIS."

and I'm staring at Tiy's post which is prefaced with: "This news post isn’t written as a precursor to an upcoming delay." and my brain is just like: "Why am I involved in so many fandoms in which 'pained waiting', 'WHEN IS IT ARRIVING', and 'antci... pation" are things?" seriously. there's Megatokyo, which is renowned for long waits between each page... Homestuck, which is... uh, a hype-train-rific ride where MEGAPAUSES have become part of the norm... I WAITED YEARS, LITERALLY FROM FOUR-GRADE TO TENTH GRADE, FOR A THIRD INSTALLMENT OF GOLDEN SUN, JUST BECAUSE OF A HINT OF A POSSIBLE SEQUEL. I waited a really... really long time for Professor Layton & the Unwound Future to actually get translated. I sit on dead webcomics, hoping, just hoping, a new page might arrive if I hope for it.

gods, I must be instilled with the patience of an elder god or something. ... do elder gods have patience? hmmmnn. need better analogy.

I feel somewhat off-topic. anyone else out there with endless patience?

Am currently at work, so do pardon the messiness of this post. I'm just trying to understand some of your thoughts, if you don't mind! :)

Pre-ordering Starbound before Vs. Pre-ordering Starbound when the beta is released:

    The Difference: None.
The End Product: X1 Copy of the Full Game (on steam) + Beta.
The Reason: Funding the team Vs. Buying the game.
The Impact: Monetary support and backing for the development team Vs. Purchasing the Beta for immediate access and subsequently getting the full game.

The Dilemma: Impatience, I can wholly understand and is no way a flaw to admit to wanting something this good that bad. For the record, I have no qualm with impatience. To my understanding, as long as it is not a full release, the price maintains. But if that is not the reason for this outburst, what then is the debacle for waiting a little longer to receive an even better game folks?

Some questions that have popped up at the back of my head and is in no way pointed intentionally at anyone. Also I would much rather consider it an explanation and not an answer, hence the E:

Q: A version at Insomnia was given. Why can't we have that?
E: Insomnia was in a controlled environment. Giving a soft copy demo of it to thousands is a whole different scenario. Suffice to say, first impression on a product matters and it is Tiys decision and vision on how, where, and when to make that said introductory phase (the beta). Take the Yogscast demo at Insomnia for example. A lot of people were pissed that they were chosen to handle the game instead of a more deserving audience as Starbound was so much more than that. Well, Starbound is and continues to be so much more than that. The Demo that is being requested is not the version nor vision that Team Chucklefish would hope nor want as a first impression for a let's play upon thousands.

Q: 87,106 Backers ( $1,974,221), what are you doing with all the money? Why hasn't the development time hastened with said money?
E: Firstly and more important, personally, it really is none of my business on where and how the money was spent. I have seen people assuming and wielding that said figure as a bulwark to make a point right to the developers face, while at the same time denouncing a portion of the 87,106 Backers as white knights who too, have wholly supported the developers via funding - adding to that total sum. Well folks, you really can't have your cake and eat it too, unless you are Molly!

Q: Estimate on a Beta was continually delayed again and again. No confidence in Chucklefish this time.
E: I would like to think of my pre-order / funding as both a gamble and a trust which I have fully taken up on my own accord. I was not under the influence of any substance when I read the "Estimated date" nor was I under duress when I keyed in my credit card to pre-order the game. With every funding and/or sponsorship, there are risk to be taken. Put yourself into Tiy's shoes. This is his dream game and he only wants the best for it. I can't shake a guy down based on that high quality control and vision, period. If there is anyone to blame, it would be me, myself and I, and not Chucklefish (at this point in time). And yet, here I am in this for the long haul because I made peace with the game the moment I knew the reason I was pre-ordering it!

Meanwhile in an alternate universe, Tiy releases the full-game in 2012, and every subsequent release is a DLC! :giggle: Things are still not looking grim, so chin up, lads!

    Take your time!
I'd rather have a beta next year and play an awesome game, never seen before, than being disappointed, because you pushed out something unfinished, just because of some impatient people.

Everyone can see, you are working on something brilliant, and really good things take their time.

See, there's a problem. To make something perfect is an endless race with unobtainable goal, in which each subsequent step is shorter that the previous one, and both take an equal amount of time. There should be a point where you say to yourself "I should stop now". And more than that - you should really stop, avoiding temptation to improve "just this one single thing". I'm not delude myself into thinking Tiy doesn't have this point, but it's still painfull to see how long it takes for them to reach here and how nonsense of a path they are taking to get there.

On a side note, now that you reminded me about it, I suggest you check this game out.

Or you can just play it the next year and leave the impatient people their "unfinished" beta. This is the solution that will suit everyone's needs, I believe.

It is true, as long as the game is done. Work in your spare time from a little girl to play anything else.
