Alternatively, devs could just stop making "claims" :) I think the community isn't necessarily angry at not having the game yet, it's angry at not having the game yet despite having been led to believe that it would've at the very least entered beta by now.

I'm not criticising the devs for wanting to make a huge and fantastic game, I'm all for that. The features they've announced are good stuff, the graphics look amazing, and overall the feel of Starbound looks like it'll be a hugely entertaining game. But between broken promises (Tiy saying the game would be released in 2013 no matter what, now we'll be lucky to see a beta in 2013) and understandable but undeniably unprofessional snarky comments on the forums, Starbound's development has gained a bit of a cynical edge. The fact that games in general are delayed is nicely explained by Tiy, but I think it misses the mark. This is not about how delays lead to better games (Duke Nukem Forever begs to differ, but in general it's probably true), this is about leading people on and letting them down again and again. I have no doubt the devs have no bad intentions of any sort, but maybe they should've just stuck to the occasional screenshot or feature update, and leave it at that...

  2. That would be fine IF that information was correct because the FAQ page, pre-order page and the roadmap has been updated with current estimates and information.
Besides it was stated many times before that the beta will make it out this year but not the full release.

Yes, I know how that works in programming too - I work at that stuff. Drawing is just easier to explain and considered an art far more often than those business solutions. Although solutions' authors might beg to differ, especially guys at microcontroller department, those magnificent magicians.

I have to say I agree with your point though, and that's exactly what I'm doing. Matter of fact, my back-log of games is still quite big, so any progress I get making it smaller is time well spent. I suspect once SB hits I will... well, disappear for a few months in a row... so it's good to get other games played until then. I did after all pay for them, and they were worth my money.

Here's to enjoying other games until SB get's out. o7

Actually my post was to do with the discussion in this topic... as i am at an understanding some people are misreading what Tiy wrote in the very first post (about beta). Atleast cudos to you sir for actually giving a reason as to why you are deleting them, not many admins do *CLAP*

It's...uh...still 2013. They still have two and a half months. Two months to be reasonable and not release beta on December 31, but two and a half months nevertheless. Unless they actually say that they're delaying beyond 2013, they haven't missed their estimate.

Can I just say something here as a person that was and still am an avid Duke Nukem fan...
Duke Nukem Forever was not a bad game; it was a great game that was well past it's shelf life. When Gearbox and Randy P's team were handed the Duke Nukem Forever project they didn't start from ground zero. They were; for the most part; handed an already complete video game and told to make if for the current generation. So that's what they did; they took an already made game and updated it for the new generation systems and it didn't transfer well. If this game had come out for the Nintendo GameCube as is was intended, people would have thought that the mechanics the game used are fancy, new, and amazing in concept. Just as people though of HALO when it was released (Side note, some of the people that were on the FIRST DNF team were on the HALO team at Bungie;) hence why the 'shield system' seemed a rip off of HALO: Combat Evolved. Just saying.. Other then that, DNF was true to it's franchise; it was crude, it was vulgar and it was EVERY BIT what Duke Nukem was about; Beer, Babes and lots and lots of toilet humor; Go back and play Time to Kill or Duke Nukem 3D they were just as bad if not worse.

The last person to do that, that I know of is Eloraam. Eloraam, for those who don't know, is a mod developer for Minecraft who made RedPower which is a massive overhaul to how redstone works. Eloraam used to have a large fanbase on account of her pioneering redstone overhauls, but her perfectionist habits caused her to update the mod very slowly. Things started to move from hype, to disappointment, to a dwindling fanbase.

I'm relatively new to this game myself, but from what I've been reading, this game has had a lot of delays in the past which I wasn't around to see. Its only a matter of time before the same problem occurs. In fact, you can see that its already happening. There appears to be an escalating number of people who care more for the beta more than caring if Tiy patched as many bugs as possible.

I'm doubtful the community is going to maintain its happy integrity if another delay occurs, and keep in mind the keyword is 'if'.

Tiy explicitly saying at the start of his post that the release date is not being delayed, apparently implies that it's being delayed :DD

A few types of people here:

The Impatient: Beta. BETA. Idc what you say, beta is now.
The Patient: Hush! Beta will get here when it does!
The Dev's: We're making this fine beta ready. So read our daily posts, so you won't get consumed by hate.
The Future Travelers: Pssh, still waiting?

Yeah, but when you screw around with flutes and ice cream pudding recipes, nobody cares.
It sounds like you're going to make the 100% fully finished product, then release it "early" 2 days before the upload gets approved by steam, screwing over your backers.

Release a very closed off version, 1 race, 1 tier, 1 planet. Call it an alpha. Instead of working on cake recipes for 8 months, then finally "Working on first boss, lol"

estimating implies that beta may not be out this year, that's mainly what has concerned people.

Thing is though, literally nothing has changed.
It was an estimate in the beginning, and it is an estimate now. All Tiy did was (probably unintentionally) draw attention to it again.

It is well and good they updated. However it doesn't change the fact they said that full release would be in 2013. No matter what.
Revising the text, does not change what happened. It is relevant to a discussion on delays as well.

What i feel really bad about is that the starbound community has turned into this. people showing sheer hatred towards each other just because some people are fine with waiting while others are not (both are valid thoughts to have in my opinion) I technically got a key from the wonderful Phil Coller during a charity stream so i can wait as long as it takes, but i am not going to go about calling people who feel they deserve to have beta now stupid or impatient, if they feel they deserve it, they feel like they deserve it, at the same time, just cause they feel they deserve the beta now, there's no need to hate on people who want to wait and call them drones and stuff. idk.. i just feel that for a game like Starbound, which seems like a great community based game with a sincerely feel good feel to it, the community seems to be very hateful and volatile. Maybe it's just cause i have no money riding on the development so i can afford to just have the starbound page load up every morning to check what sort of cool development they are doing.

Shit happens when making a game though and sometimes massive hurdles have to be overcome that were never foreseen so i guess thats why Tiy said that its still estimated.

You know... it was suspicious because it was said BEFORE they started to sell preorders. Like i was absolutely sure that i am going to support that game when i seen it first, then i have noticed there is only way to pay for a pre-order, and it is not suitable for me, i was little angry, but that's fine. Well if it will be steam-only i'll be in angry-mode again. But now i see they used some nasty trick to get quick money. Honestly i hate those "everyday life" reports from devs, but that's fine too. My faith is still strong, i see how they work, but there is a doubt about their methods.

Once beta is released, this type of stuff will clear up. People are just aggravated and they want it now. It's not unfair for them to want it, but people get too worked up over it. That's the problem.
