Let's be really honest, lil' devs. The game won't launch when it's complete. The game will launch when you're somehow satisfied with it and when you think people will complain the least.

The BETA may as well not come this year. Why? Because it's nothing you have control on...Maybe today the game looks almost done, and tomorrow, after adding that new SOMETHING, everything is funked up.

So in my honest opinion, you should take as much time as needed, without teasing us anymore, not even telling us that the BETA comes this year, cause in the end, everything could pop out from nowhere and ruin all the planning. You guys get ideas of adding awesome stuff everyday, and most of this awesome stuff could be in the BETA, you think. So you will always have mroe problems caused by new code and shizz like that.

Most of the RELEASE DATE threads exist because your failed estimations throughout the time. One thing that I really hope is that by "BETA this year" you don't actually mean "BETA on 31st December".

No, it doesn't because in the end, you paying for a pre-order doesn't put you above anyone else. You're still the same as someone else who pre-ordered this game.

I will remember starbound for it developpement stage, not because delayed (i don't care that, i prefer an anwsome game) but for your daily communication. This is for me the best thing a indie studio can do, particulary for crowdfounded game.
You love your game, you respect your customer, continue like this, it's just perfect !

For someone who has already waited for several months, a few more will make no difference. Indeed, personally, I prefer to have this delay but end up with a more complete, polished game as result.

What would that make you then? Gullible? You clicked that button, you took the decision and if you believed first-hand that your pre-order would affect much in the end, then I hate to disappoint, but it doesn't. It really doesn't. In life, you take decisions, and you live with them. Deal with it.

I can wait until the end of the year. But if I do not get the beta before that date ....

Too bad for the people who have been waiting a year or more, though. :(

At this point I don't really care when it gets done as long as it's good and before the universe implodes. But justifying over-optimistic relase estimations with over-optimistic predictions of quality in relation to production time? Seems legit

This game will be worth the wait, and I'm glad I invested my money in it. :)
The fact that the development team makes an effort to post daily updates should signify that these people take their work seriously. I really do believe that the longer the game takes, the better it will be.

Well, I've just recently pre-ordered the game, I haven't really been that much into the "waiting rage" as many people have. However, I do have something to say which is not very pleasant and probably will be scorned at by many people (maybe for lack of info, probably because I have nothing to do with programming and game development, but still I know a thing or two about developing projects and there are things that go beyond the content of a project, when speaking of management and so forth).

I think it is a horrible mistake to have delayed the game so much taking int o account the thousands of people waiting for it. Games may be a form of art, but generally (old) art is more about contemplation than interaction and the personal experience is very passive. Secondly, this is not even an argument; in the old days (and certainly still today, in different ways) artists had patrons who commended on art works, and they did have schedules and pressure on them. That was their living, most of it - the rest, the works they did solely for their own satisfaction, they didn't make their living nor jeopardized their "business". So that's not an argument, it's a plead.

If you are going to involve the (future) players in the making of a game, you should be very respectful with them and have them into serious account in any or every of your decisions. The way the team addresses the community is respectful in a lot of ways, but it is very stubborn when it comes to this issue (at least) and you really are swimming against the tide on this one. Maybe you should have foreseen that if the community grows too much, the tide gets to big and the current gets too hard to deal with. Which is okay that you haven't foreseen, but then again, it HAS HAPPENED, so what measures have you taken into account to hamper it? Not that many, and since I've been aware of the project, nothing but repeating yourselves over and over again.

What could you have done or do? You could add more people to work with the team. You could lower some goals and jeopardize some of the project's greatness strategically (why not? You are being stubborn not doing so, a work of art is never felt completed or perfect for the artist who created it, you will never feel fully satisfied with it and feeding those feelings is not thinking on the project and community, it is solely done for the purpose of satisfying your own demands and expectations, which is good that they are high, but it is not good that they are dysfunctionally high ).

And what you said about the distance between people working on the project, that is surely a big issue. I have worked on a project where that happened with my co-coordinator and it was the most excruciating teamwork experience ever. It was hard to communicate, when we had meetings with the whole team or just each other through skype or whatever things took too long and little was done, besides a lot of things weren't done at all or were badly done because they just didn't get through well. Now programming is different, but I can only guess how much of the same problems you probably had/have. And that is very bad for the project.

Enough said. I do hope the Beta comes this year. Not that I reeeaaaaally need this game to make my life better or whatever, but because I realize this has dragged on for too long and it's not gonna help you guys or the project in the short run (which is just the inevitable end of a long run in fact), if it hasn't already.

Of course anyone who looks forward to this game should support the developers. However, the whole premise of the pre-order is beta access. The pre-order by the way which was a transaction of money, it wasn't a donation. So when you fail to deliver on your end you should expect backlash. This isn't an some entitled impatient spoiled rich kid, this is a person that payed for your product.

Also you have to assume how suspicious it is for the developer to make an entire update regarding the mechanics for a game delay, but say they still aim for a 2013 release. That's like a mechanic saying "it takes a while to repair a car fully, sometimes mechanics deliver cars unfixed but eventually it will be fixed if you bring it back to them enough for them to perfect it... but we will repair your car, I'm just sayin..."

Your first thought wouldn't be to gush over the excitement of your repaired car, it would be "why even bring that up if your saying you're going to repair it?"
