Prevent others from taking your items on your ship

Hi. A friend of mine encountered this when he played on a community server.
After partying with a few people and playing with them, he returned to his ship, found that someone has trashed it, and took his items.

This can create some tension before going to community servers, and it's one of the reasons I don't join others unless they are my friends.

I've thought of some solutions to prevent others from taking your items. I've also took what others have said and updated this.

    Possible Ways

    1.)Chest locks/Item Upgrades:
I've thought about using item upgrades to make safes, or treasure chest that can only be open or broken by your character. But that might be problematic if you use that item on other people's ships or houses. They won't be able to remove it. If chests can be locked only on your ship, that may solve it.

    2.)Ship upgrade:
I read that in the future of Starbound, we will be able to upgrade ship/increase size.
It would be awesome if a section of your upgraded ship can ONLY accessed by your character and no one else. You can store your items here and no one can take it, trash it, and it'll be safe.

    3.)Ship Security System.
It'll be incorporated to one of the ship's control panels (maybe through a ship upgrade). We can access a control panel where we can control the level of security.
Level 1: Anyone can access your ship's secured area
Level 2: No one can access your secured area

    Incorporating this/Cosmetics/Etc:

1.)For immersion, the ship upgrade can use a character scanner, iris scanner, or some other security device to recognize your character. For everyone else, computer text can say something like "access denied."
2.) We can just use a simple, different colored door to the secured area. (or chest, if that's the solution)
3.)Putting in a new button in the default ship's control panel

I'm not sure if this is planned for the future but I'll leave it here just in case it isn't.
The way to do this is open for discussion. For me, it doesn't matter which suggestion (even from replies) is done.

I agree with you, I've posted this in the suggestions forum section before.

Also if you want to prevent people from destroying your ship or stealing your items at current time,
Backup your player map which is in your starbound folder.

This is done by going to program files -> steam -> steamapps -> common -> starbound then copy the map "Player" and place it somewhere else like your desktop.
When someone destroys your things you remove the player map from the starbound folder and copy the one you put on your desktop back. Your ship is now back to the way it was.

Interesting suggestion. It would be neat if chest or other storage can be upgraded to put a lock on it or something. Locked chest will only be allowed on ships AND can only be accessed and removed by the owner of the ship. That will take care of the problem of putting item on other people's ship. For houses or other structures on the planet I can not suggest much, considering that it is difficult to tell who owns what; unlike the ship. For a game like Starbound I think it may be difficult to implement binding items to certain characters?

I think there should be a simple button/switch that just locks down all the items placed in the ship. Simple and effective.

Also I would like to see a way to disable combat on the ships ... Had a friend accidentally kill my Dr. and I was sad sad.

Yes, it would be better to have the locks only available on your ship.
And no one else can mess with that if they're on your ship. There's no need for cosmetic changes this way, except maybe to recolor what chest has the special lock.

One of the best reasons to not play on public servers.

They need to implement some sort of way to keep people from breaking/stealing things from your ship. Locks could work, but it'd have to be done properly.

Or you just don't party up with people you don't trust.

Some people do like to play on different servers with new people online. A way to enjoy the game without worrying about items being stolen would be nice. ^^

Yeah I down right refuse to party with anyone I don't know when playing multiplayer. Can kinda be a drag because sometimes you want to play with certain people who seem nice enough and they can be all the way acrost the galaxy in a different sector you might not even have unlocked on that server.

How is that helpful? This is nobody's fault but the idiot who stole stuff.

I'd be extremely surprised if they or someone didn't add more server control features. I definitely believe it's just a matter of time...probably along the same timeline as the premium servers.

How about instead of arbitrarily putting in craft-able locked chests you could just simply choose who can access stuff in your ship. kinda like a protected area. as that would be a better and more intuitive solution as you are already invincible in your own ship right?

In other words, don't try to make new friends. Got it.

I imagine this will change as they add new features. For now, I'd recommend storing your valuables on some obscure home planet somewhere (ideally hidden a short distance down a cave where you can't see it from the surface). With the huge number of planets in this game, odds are, no one will ever find it.

I do like an area where others can't access. I've added this to the first post.

    -Ship Security System.
It'll be incorporated to one of the ship's control panels. We can access a control panel where we can control the level of security.
Level 1: Anyone can access your ship's secured area
Level 2: No one can access your secured area

    I hope so.
