Is it possible to make a backup of previous versions of Starbound. So when the next wipe occurs you can start up a separate instance of the game that is still running Offended Koala or will the update find all Starbound files on your computer and alter them? It would be nice to be able to go back and look at some stuff I've built even after the next wipe.

Best advice would be to take screen caps and cherish them!

I just knew somebody would give an answer like this. Yes I've read that before and your answer is useless. I know this is a beta, I know how a beta works. I want to know if I can preserve a seperate copy of the whole game. You can do it with games like Minecraft and such so I want to know if you can do it with Starbound. You can refuse updates so I don't see why you can't do this.

You might try copying the entire game folder to a backup location. You might be able to run the copies in offline mode, but I don't how you'd get steam to load an install other than the default directory.

So are your efforts to keep old versions because you want to keep your work, when the point of this testing is to balance the game not make giant projects.

I really doubt that's possible other than what swatelite said, and even then you wouldn't be able to both hang onto an old version and update it while keeping both.

Well, to be fair... we are humans and it can sometimes be fun to look back at the stages of growth of a project. It would be pretty cool if there were a scrap book of sorts for the game so that we all could go back and see how it developed from the start.

You could copy the whole Starbound folder. This would preserve everything; the only issue being the .exe's.
You'd have to bypass the Steam DRM *cough*thepiratebay*cough* but if you did that you'd have no issue.

I would hope that someone is preserving the older versions.

Think back to Minecraft, people have preserved and kept the older versions.

The point is that if I'm testing things at the point where I am I don't want to go through everything I have already done to continue testing.

You know what, that makes sense.

I get what you are saying.

Ohhh in that case you should look at the modding section. It looks like it is pretty easy to edit things so that you start with specific stuff.

I haven't done it yet, but it doesn't look too hard.

But those things you have done in the past with your character have changed, that's why they want you to play through the start again.

That's why you just read the changelog to see if the update will affect the way you've done things.

if you dont start over how will you know if the things they changed affected your early game,

for instance gun changes, surely it only affects people who are far enough in to get guns correct...
what about that guard of the dungon with a gun.

    change in ore drop reates
doesent affect the guy with a stock pile in any noticeable way

    leather/ meat drop rates
is having more/less food/leather affecting progression

    And it has!

Like others have said, if you can't deal with it, don't play the game yet.

None of the updates have changed how I got to where I am. Honestly, I don't see why every time somebody asks a question it gets mangled into a "It's a beta" argument. I've had other big builds get lost from the wipes and I had no problem with it. I just don't really feel like killing the same penguin over and over. The biggest point though, it's my copy of the game that I bought with my money, I play however I see fit.

Yes they have. All of the early game content has been rebalanced.

You hear "it's a beta" in response to the "I miss my character" threads because it is the correct answer.
