I support preordering even if the game isn't ready. Early access to beta and 10% discount would make it even better, I think.

I would preorder this game if I could afford it (atm, I couldn't currently), regardless of whether or not a beta copy came with. I am really excited to play the game and I'm not one of those people who would, on principal, wait for a finished product, but I wouldn't expect to be able to play a beta just because I preordered either. I AM GOING to buy this game, if pre-ordering it gave Chucklefish a little extra throwing around money for the final push, I would gladly do so. At full price or not, with beta invite or not. Sadly, even if it goes pre-order right now, I personally wouldn't be able to do anything with it. :(

I support pre-ordering. Just like most of the community, I'm on the edge of my seat in excitement, and would love to help contribute for beta testing. It would also be nice to not have to worry with Steam's sluggish downloading speed on release date if the game is put on there.

I don't know how I feel about preordering getting you Beta. One problem with a lot of games is that people that preorder it will put up videos spoiling everything in it, thus making it easy for the rest of us to see whats happening and how to handle a situation. I think Beta should be handled by people that will actually work to find bugs and such.

The term beta is getting tossed around a lot now days, but it's primary goal is to find bugs, not drum up sales. Yea, I have to say I'm against preorder for Beta, but that's just my opinion of it.

In the case of Starbound, it's a build and fight 2D sandbox game. I'd assume every situation is handled the same exact way.

Build.. Or fight. Sorry for the spoilers?

That spoiler argument is so strange.. Before Borderlands 2 came out they went crazy with promoting it, there were 40min gameplay vids up like every week, and there were like non-stop trailers and dev journals and whatever.. And I avoided any type of spoiler by, just.. not.. clicking them?

    Idk.. Maybe I'm just special..

Whilst a part of me becomes rather worried to spoiling information for myself (or others if I happen to discuss it with them). I feel if we have the option to help the development via pre-order that is great news and frankly the addition of a beta is a generous bonus. We can worry endlessly over the spread of information and perhaps more importantly incorrect information regarding the game, or what certain demographics will do with the provided access - but this isn't directly something we're supposed to plan for, if the developers find it a suitable situation to release beta access then I will happily support it.

I trust the developers to make an informed choice about it, considering its already been suggested I hope that is under-way. Supporting the game is our goal here, not deciding if others must abide by our choice of using a provided bonus. Personally I'd more likely end up just playing than endlessly attempting to break the game looking for a bug.

Sure I'd preorder. Especially if they're in a money rut, or maybe then just need some money to feed the codemonkeys. ;)

"access to a beta *when the beta is done*"
Doesn't this essentially mean it's what is usually called an "Open Beta"? That's nothing unusual these days. In that stage, generally NDAs are over and the public is free to comment and release videos, screenshots, etc. Doesn't this then help generate publicity and interest in the game?
And as for pre-ordering, offer it at a discount on the final full-retail price?
All this aside though, yes, I personally would be greatly interested in pre-ordering. I would advise that the beta state of the game is made painfully obvious to anyone and everyone though, just to be absolutely sure. Like a massive disclaimer every time you boot it up.
Some people out there seem to need constant reminding ^^

It's not impossible to stay away from spoilers, just don't watch the videos or read the posts with spoilers?
In terms of the term beta getting tossed around, I disagree, just because the majority of people will play and not report bugs, doesn't mean a percentile won't, there will be people who will report bugs and test the game. Open beta isn't just named for kicks and giggles, it's open to anyone (that pre-orders) to test and play, if some play more than test, that's their prerogative, they did essentially pay for beta.

early beta equals more game time which adds up to you turning into a Starbound master before the game is completed + have control over half the galaxy with dozens of corperations at your side.
dont care bout the bugs if its a beta.... sell it, sell it nao D:

I'm all for a beta, though Ghostar carries a good point. Though I think a closed beta has already or is taking place. I think that the idea of a public beta is mostly a form of productive fan service.

Let them throw us a bone. Why not?

    Honestly, I'm fine with either.

Preorder --I get to support the devs earlier and OPTIONALLY play the game earlier.
No preorder -- I get to build up my excitement a bit more, subsequently support them and play the game with less bugs.

Hey, at least it's better than anime fanservice... which is the opposite of productive...

The way i see it they can't go wrong giving us an open beta pay-in letting us fiddle with something less than what chucklefish views as "the finished product". Two reasons for this. One: As i said in my post above, when a game will get regular updates there really is no "finished product". It's just what we have now. And two, the more important one: Tiy or one of the developers said "you only get one release day". Sort of like a first impression thing, but look at another game that by itself was decent but due to it being or seeming ready to go with pictures, videos, talk, etc. it's release was very meh. That game was Dungeon Defenders. I can't even tell you how long that game got put off but i can tell you after a game is complete or it seems like it's complete from released information and media and the lack of "what's left to be done/why it's not out yet" it starts to kill the hype. I know Dungeon Defenders' release was delayed because of XBLA issues with microsoft, but that persisted long enough for patience to run out.

In the end what i'm trying to say is I'd rather play a game that is awesome but lacks a little polish now than wait for the shiny great game till much later when all i was waiting for was things that were decent but contributed little to the actual experience. Perfect example of this: Terraria was still a wonderful game when mining rock/ore still sounded like dirt. When they changed it i realized it, loved it, and was happy they made the change. But it totally would not have been worth postponing playing that great game till that was all done.

the "information ahead of time" argument is weird.
again i can use starfarer and a little of terraria for this.
you know in starfarer, there was a composition of starship i was unable to beat (its a space fighting game). and you know what ? even by watching videos of ppl beating it, i personally couldnt.
same for terraria, its not because i looked up videos of ppl beating eye of cthulu or making X item that i was suddenly able to do it myself.
information transpires no matter what, at worst, if you're really that paranoid about it, you can just be careful

True phyrex. That and whether the information gets out a few weeks ahead or right away, a player made wiki with every slice of info will be made and those with the inclination to find the info will look it up. It cannot be stopped. Some people want to play that way while others will resist looking anything up and go at it blind even if they're a month late. It's an irrelevant point.
