Which fence type do you prefer? I started using hardwood, which seems to be pretty popular, but I'm thinking of going back to iron... Hardwood seems like it's a waste since it's so hard to find and you only get one fence piece per piece of hardwood while you get 10 fence pieces per iron bar, which you can find the materials for pretty easily. :/
I just go with hardwood, it takes a long time before that breaks down. And hardwood is not actually as scarce as you might think to begin with, just visit the secret woods regularly and you'll have plenty hardwood for everything you need and more. I prefer the look of stone though, just a shame it breaks down so often.
I use hardwood as well, for the durability. I already have a full stack of it, since I visit the Secret Woods daily, so supply isn't an issue for me. I do like the look of the iron fences but I think hardwood fits my farm's aesthetic a bit better.
Hardwood for sure. It looks really nice and it takes forever to break down. It's nice to not have to worry about fixing fences constantly cause they break down. I do also really enjoy stone because they stay up for a decent amount of time and do look nice.
Hardwood, as others have pointed out. It's really not that scarce once you've got the Secret Woods open, and it lasts long enough to save you trouble in the long run. Iron is all right for some short lengths of decorative fencing, and yes, it's cheap to put together, so when one fence segment of iron collapses, I usually just tear that whole length of fence out and replace all of it at once, knowing the rest is going to fail soon. I like the look of stone fences but they really fall down pretty quickly given what they're made of-- which is weird since there are still stone fences up after more than a thousand years in some parts of Europe, and after four hundred years in parts of New England. Really, it should be more durable than iron or hardwood.
I was actually just thinking the exact same. It is weird stone breaks down so fast. Wood will rot and iron will rust, but stone can literally last for millenia. Real time millenia.
From a game-design perspective, CA's intent would be to make the resource scarcity match the durability. Wood is the most common and easily renewed resource at first, then stone, then iron ore, and hardwood is the rarest. If stone lasted longest (which it probably would in the real world) then there'd be no real reason to build anything that used up iron or hardwood, which are harder to get supplies of, except for decorative/aesthetic reasons. Game logic, not real-world logic.
Aavak says he thinks the stone walls are *actually* just made of newspaper, and that's why they fall apart so easily. lol
I personally wouldn't mind using fences as decoration if it lasted longer than it does (or if it didn't break down at all). As it is right now the only real options we have for fencing are iron and hardwood unless you wanna spend hours and hours reparing fences. I did use stone fencing around my fields and such to begin with until it all began breaking down, now I only use hardwood fencing around my animals and that's it. And that's sad imo. And I agree, no stone fence break down as fast as the Stardew Valley stone fence xD
It's also a bit strange that paving stones never seem to wear out but stone fences do. Or maybe the stones do and I just haven't stuck to the same save long enough to see it. Paving is one of last things I do on my farms.
Like how gold tools are better than steel (as in many RPGs), even though in real life, gold is soft and heavy-the exact opposite of what you want.
Yup. A gold pickaxe would be pretty darn useless. *Hits rock, watches gold pickaxe flatten and rock isn't even scratched.*
I choose 'none of the above'. I don't use fences, because I don't see the point in them. I can use paths to deter the growth of grass into crop areas far cheaper, and with far less restrictions on my mobility. For ranching animals, there's no reason they can't wander across my property. They aren't going to damage my crops. I can find them in the morning before I let them out to do my daily petting on their head and harvesting whatever I harvest from them. I suppose if I focused on pigs, then it might be useful to keep them in a pen so I don't have to hunt all over my property for the truffles, but that would be the only case where a fence might be needed.
I use stone and a mix of hardwood. Yeah the stone breaks down pretty quick but the waifu takes care of that if I wait long enough.
*lays on the ground and secretly hopes that 1.1 will have iridium fences that A: never decay and B: are customizable to look nice* I want to want fences, but man the decay rate on those things are always so crazy.
Ugh, yeah, I would like something to use all that stupid iridium I collect on. Once you get the tools upgraded and everything built that requires it, and especially once you have the purple cat statue, you can practically bathe in the stuff. (Which I would most wholeheartedly NOT recommend. lol)
iridium fences that are customizable, I love this idea. I use hardwood fences, I have a mod that makes them look nice, and I love the fact they last longer. Also, I took the lumberjack profession, so I get a small amount of hardwood just by cutting normal trees, in addition to my trips to the secret woods. I do not lack in supply, lol. I do as others have mentioned here as well, small lengths of iron or stone simply for aesthetics, framing off a nice area or what have you. For the most part though, it's hardwood.
