Prefabrication and construction (From Space!)

Came up with this idea before bed last night.
I did a quick search, didn't find anything. I'm excited about my idea, and my wife is too! (Usually that's a good sign!)

-Prefabrication is the preconstruction of modular structures so that they can be placed in a new location readily from the factory. The relation to Starbound would be something like teleportation or a orbital deployment.

Inside of your ship there is a special prefab-hold where you can design small structures to be placed upon a new planets surface. Ideally you can spend minimal time on the surface before getting yourself a safe haven, so this method will allow you to get a small base up and running in almost no time at all. Simply build your desired structure and keep the dimensions, and move to the surface. There, you prepare a landing zone and place a location marker for the structure to deploy at.

Sorry for the short and gritty suggestion, but I had to get it out of my mind and onto paper before I forget. Hope you all enjoy the possibilities as much as I do! Cannot wait for this game.

Yeah, seems like a pretty good idea :D
Now we don't have to get over-run by hostile mobs when we land.

Maybe you build it first in a teleportation chamber inside your ship or something you need to buy or make?

Maybe it could even be a large facility you've built on your new home planet? Just enter the coordinates and have a receiving pad ready. In the case of teleportation anyways. I still like the idea of orbital deliveries more, even though we know the technology for teleportation exists in this game. Just because it's more physical science and less a-wizard-did-it-science.

I'd like to see you fabricate structures and then "digistruct" them into a system. Then, you can call in copies from the orbital spaceship to be meteor dropped. They'd be wrapped in a sort of protective block layer to survive penetration into the atmosphere and the following crash landing.

You'd do it for limited size structures, like wall sections or turrets or mini-compounds with fabrication crafting stations and such.

NICE! thinking about meteor dropping a turrent onto a boss's head.

This is a good way to toss away spare materials (like stone, greybrick, and some furniture... very common in Terraria).
You can "pre-made" some structures, or even get some "plans", asset, and put on the planet surface.

Maybe to "decoy" that, you could need a "Locator" or a "Signal" from the planet surface marking the land spot, or a "plane landing spot".

    :D

  9. Interesting idea! I like the part where you state that players would still be required to go on-planet and place some sort of flares/markers, thus establishing the area where buildings would be deployed at. Maybe even a cooldown, or a maximum number of deployments per planet, just to avoid people spamming buildings all over the Universe. :p

I also like that there should be a limit to dimensions, keeping these deployable-buildings at a proper small-ish size. ^^

Yeah, I actually thought that you still need a chance to explore a planet before deploying a structure! Otherwise, all the fun of the initial danger would rush out of the experience.
Could toss some further balancing in and make the entire process require more materials than you have available early on into the game, so that you still need to build your home at the start.

Glad to see the good natured posts in the starbound forums. I was always worried someone would flame the idea. Very positive replies!

  11. Hopefully it would be late enough so you can't mass-produce turrets and place them on the enemy homeworld :)

I like this idea, though I still think we should require something before being able to use it.

I would love this. Load up the factory with blocks/materials, choose a base template, and orbital drop it in... that'd be super kewl.

Great idea. Especially if automated resource extraction is implemented, find a good planet and beam down a few automated ore-mining rigs and explore the planet while they work.

  15. Automated things aren't too good -- exploits some?

The concept of slaves is altogether pleasing...

I'd never really thought of the idea of actually deploying automated structures or turrets. The idea was more just to establish a wall between you and whatever horrible creations nature placed against you upon the planet's surface. That would be a pretty cool way of getting structures onto the ground though.

This is a very good idea and is similar to my personal blueprint idea.
I think the space drop with a beacon might be the best implementation of this instead of a builder bot.

I was thinking, one way to circumvent easy and sneaky ways of beating bosses with drops would be for there to be a countdown. For example, you place a marker or flare for the drop to take place, and then have to run around or fight off hordes for a minute before the prefab lands. It could be interesting to have a last stand until your structure arrives :)

As for size, I like it being constrained to the original space available in your ship. If you start out the game, you could make a small house, whereas larger ships would allow for larger drops!
