Pre-Order Beta Confirmed!

Wouldn't the supporters of beta say the same if he chose the opposite?

 

I want to assume its not money. I'm glad, they are giving us a chance of preorder, but i get the feeling that the community was a big reason as to why they went with the decision

That is also true, i dont know, im just being fickle about the notion of a beta. I see it as that there are more repercussions if they release a beta and people are disappointed. Its just the decision doesnt sit well with me.

 

I think he has been thinking on the beta release option for a few months. I don't get that impression of him being pressured.
As far as I know, Tiy seems to be a person who enjoys making nice stuff for others to enjoy.

Look, guys. If you want to play the full game instead of a beta, then you wait. If you can't, well, then you don't want it enough. I managed to be without spoilers for Game of Thrones even a year after the first season, even though everyone were talking about it constany. I just asked everyone to be nice and not spoil it for me. If you want to be without spoilers that bad, you will make it happen.

 

Hm.. well I guess this is just a matter of opinion.
Finding a slime planet, I couldn't really count that as a spoiler as that's kind of like someone saying 'In Starbound, you can fight a four-winged rainbow praying mantis-zebra hybrid!!1!' There's such a small chance of someone else finding that, it's barely even worth noting. However that sentence might not be so credible as we don't exactly know everything about planet generation, and we don't know if the beta would be limited to say, 3 specific planets that everyone can go to.
But with something like that MineCraft Room, it's something secret, something special that you wouldn't find in a beta first of all, and since Starbound is a bunch of procedurally generated stuff, I don't think two people would stumble upon the same thing, unless as I said before, the player's abilities or range of exploration are limited in the beta.
Honestly it's hard for me to discuss this because we wouldn't know how the beta would work at all.

And by the way (this isn't directed towards you Mandachi) about arguing, in the end we're all friendly. A few bad seeds sneak in sometimes, but we should just learn to ignore them. Otherwise if we're 'arguing' with someone, we're probably not in full fledged fights (alliteration!) unless one of the arguers is completely ridiculous, or trolling.

 

It could also be time-limited, maybe just a few weeks, then no more playing until a few more weeks until the game comes out. Good idea, bad idea?

OR... to not give "beta testers" too much of an edge in progress, the could make it so that beta saves don't carry over to the final game? Too harsh? Yeah, maybe too harsh... some people might lose interest after losing their progress, sadly.

I don't think much progress would be made though. I'd doubt that you'd be able to make it very far in the beta.

Theres' no advantage or edge. You play either alone, or with people you know, and if it's the latter, chances are you agree that you all start fresh anyways. It's like the people getting mad because someone hacks their single player game, even though it doesn't affect them at all.

 

Good points! Since major parts of the game will be missing... a player would be a fool to not start a new game so that they can actually progress and play the full game. True.

They're not speculations on what they will do, just thoughts on possible solutions or ideas.

To have a time limit... Nah, I don't think the beta will be that huge, just enough to be tested in general, until the full release is ready.

For this part, well I don't think that's necessary. And like you said it could lead to negativity, but I suppose this would be explained before any pre-order beta release is official.

 

I agree with both points - I think that when the beta is opened up for people to play it, it would be made clear (or it would be common sense) that since it isn't complete and is missing critical modules of the game such as story and quests and the spaceship, that it would be completely necessary to make a new file to play the full game (and therefore, if someone is upset about their "lost progress", they have no one to blame but themselves). I'm curious on how it will flesh out.

 

Oh dear. IM amazed these forums arent tearing themselves apart with excitement right now, so Im just going to say that however long it takes Im willing to wait, I have a few other games ot keep me company till then

 

I am wondering about the technicalities of it. Steam recently got burned with the DayZ launch, and I would hate for game reviewers to give Starbound a bad rap because they review an incomplete version. Would the devs release it on their website only? There are so many possible problems to an early beta release...

As for the "spoilers" discussion, I'd hope that the people who are playing the early beta would be respectful of those who wait and not post a lot of gameplay stuff in the general discussion. It would just be a matter of courtesy.
