Spoilers aren't limited to the forums. Chances are I'll overhear my friends talking about beta, or unknowingly glance over a post about it on some other forum
Therefor even if we ignore the fact that I wouldn't want to give up the forums for however many months it'd take for starbound to be released, there're still more problems to be had

 

I'm both happy and sad about this.
There are very good, already discussed reasons as to why.

 

Well, if considering so many possibilities and going for worst case scenario, one can only say: Shit Happens.

 

That can easily be faked. But oh well, I hope it's true.

 

This is actually a pretty good reason to fiddle around with the Beta - Learn the basics and gain some experience before the "serious" playthrough, sort of like a tutorial.

There have been many times in a game that I've had to remake my Character because something stupid/silly/pointless occurred, due to my lack of in-game knowledge. (I remade my Fallout 3 character after unintentionally drinking toilet water )

 

Even though this news is out... Does it mean the preorder beta is coming soon?

I wouldn't feel bad with paying for a preorder to support the devs in anycase.

 

If it isn't true, then Forever will likely be mocked and his word turned to moot, so I for one see no reason to doubt it's legitimacy regardless of trust or what have you.
Although, I do choose to trust him regardless, he seems pretty okay from past posts of his that I've seen.

Honestly I don't get what 'spoilers' some people are saying they'd have to avoid on the forums if they didn't play the beta... I mean by now you pretty much have the gist of the whole game, and the only thing that could be spoiled by now is the main plot, or story-related bosses, which probably would barely be shown in the beta anyway, if shown at all.
Besides, every bit of information we get from the devs could be counted as spoilers. Like if the devs announce the official name of the robot race, I wouldn't avoid a thread discussing it because it would be technically be a spoiler for the game. (wait why am I adding to discussions? that's always a bad idea.)

Anyhow, I probably would play it, depending on how late in the game development it would be released...

It most certainly is. If people cared enough to play only the full game at release then its just a simple act of not putting in the effort of paying for the beta. Seems pretty simple to me.

Thats great and all, and I have nothing against these people, but I do dislike the people who come here and complain about the devs decision to release a pre-order beta because they'd rather play the full game. Then when given suggestions on how this is still possible they respond with 'Why should I?'. Don't come here to complain about something that you have the power to rectify yet choose not to.

I agree with you, however if these people honestly do just want to play the full game and are shitty with the devs for deciding on a pre-order then they should just wait for the full game. If they are unwilling to do that then it isn't the devs fault, its theirs for having an undeserved sense of entitlement.

I have a feeling you misunderstood my criticism of these people. I'm not saying that those people HAVE TO WAIT, I'm saying that they shouldn't complain. Nobody is forcing them to by the beta but themselves, they shouldn't come here and criticize this decision simply because they lack the mental fortitude to wait for the full release.

I just wanted to discuss why I think the "Wait till release" argument doesn't always work

We have barely seen a fraction of the game, even less for me considering I haven't watched any of the livestreamss

 

Agreed, a few people are getting their backs up about the prospective beta a bit too much. Let's not let this become like some other threads, such as the "those against a beta" thread.

 

We already know the main components of the game, though.
I think I could say that we pretty much know what's generally going on and what to expect. After all, we've seen enough to understand how awesome Starbound is.
Really, I'm pretty sure that the only things we haven't seen are more specific things, like items or quests or something. (But I think Tiy said recently that they started or were about to start working more on quests) ..also going back to that thing I said, '...every bit of information we get from the devs could be counted as spoilers...' I'm sure that when Tiy is working more into quests, (still using that as an example) he'll give us screenshots of how they work, or maybe text from an npc, which is pretty much spoiling the game in itself, and people don't complain on the forums about getting information about the game when that kind of thing happens.
Anyway, I highly doubt that there will be some crazy surprise that you'll be seeing in the beta...
However if anyone is frightened that there will be some kind of surprise in the beta, they can avoid it if they want.
(I may have gotten a bit off topic in this post...)

 

I wouldn't really consider the game mechanics or the game core (which is prob all we've seen) as a spoiler. I've just sorta lurked on the forums looking at the main posts from the blog every now and then to avoid the story wise spoilers (All I know is we have like humans, apes, robots, birds and plants.)

I only actually made the acc to play with the player creator. Will prob play the beta though.

Don't mistake a discussion as something hostile, debates aren't a bad thing

Sure, we know the base mechanics of the game
But, for example, imagine if there was a slime planet, where everything is made of goo
Wouldn't it be cool to stumble upon that randomly?
Wouldn't it be uncool to read about somebody stumbling upon that randomly?
The things devs release are typically not going to be exciting things like that, just an example of the basic mechanics

A good example is this from Borderlands 2:

The Minecraft room. I knew about it the day BL2 was released, because it was absolutely everywhere. I'd have loved to have found that on my own.

 

Maybe in the future we'll discover that they were having money issues during development and chose this to continue.
I'm partially interested as to why he chose this. Was it a "Why not" or a "It could help" thing?
