Oh the humanity. Seriously, is it so hard to get that he won't be able to resist the beta but still would prefer to play the full game?

    Pre-order beta? NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I honestly could not be more disappointed in this decision. I was hoping they would actually have a real beta, not a pre-order one. Pre-order betas, are, in my experience, never productive, which is pretty much te opposite of what a true beta is. I don't think many people are going to pre-order specifically to play the game. I have also experieced that when games have such betas, people are counterproductive during the beta, and the game is still very buggy upon launch. This decision is very offputting in my opinion. I am going to abstain from pre-ordering specifically to get the beta. And if there are no other perks to pre-ordering, I will not pre-order at all.

I think that depends on the kind of people, not the kind of beta.
And we already know this community is good enough to help in this beta.

I don't see a problem with it honestly. As I understand their plans, we will get the sandbox version of the game as the beta when we pre-order. Chucklefish will then continue work on the missing systems of the game, likely playing internal betas of that more complete version. During that time, they'll have the added benefit of thousands of pre-order beta players submitting bug reports and suggestions regarding the game features they have access to. How could that do anything but help?

    Also...
    Really?!

Probably a dumb question but what the heck is a Q (Q1 and Q2)

Q stands for quarter. Q1 is January, February, March; Q2 is April, May, June; and so on.

Aaand you totally missed the reason why I said that.. lemme point it out

(Somebody in reply to Straw Hat) - "...Or you could just wait and buy the full game."
(Straw Hat) - "Why should i"

Yes I find this extremely hard to understand.

If not Q1 I assume early Q2 soonest because they've got much done already and Q3 would be pushing it too far back.

Sadly. If the beta isn't going to be ready till Q2, that means the actual release of the game won't be till possibly late Q2 or sometime in Q3... So we got a bit of a wait ahead of us it seems. Here I was hoping for a March-ish release. =P

Well. At least they're adding to the game to make it as good as it can be, I'd rather them delay the game and make it amazing rather then them send it out full of bugs and not everything they wanted to put in. I've said it time and time again, they have no obligation to give us the game until they damn well think its ready to be given. So now we wait.

Yes. Most people that play Pre-order betas aren't productive, but they are already DOING a closed beta with close friends right this minute. Plus, if there's an actual beta, there's going to be a bunch of people raging that they didn't get in while so-and-so did. It would cause a bunch more drama for the team then they need. Plus, it's not a beta in the sense of bug squashing, that's what closed beta's are for. They are giving us a taste of the game, to tide us till it comes out fully, because everyone was complaining that the game wasn't out yet or that it got delayed. Also the Pre-order will help them work faster because they'll be getting income coming in from the game before release.

So you're pretty much saying you don't want to support chucklefish just because they chose to let you try some of the game. Pre-order and don't play the beta, easy enough, it's probably what I'm going to do. Maybe I'll mess with the character maker and one or two planets but I plan to wait till release to play it more in depth.

which quarter it will be ready in??? - is the wrong question

which year??? - is the right question

The answer: ,,When it's ready"

I can't say I'm surprised about the beta not likely being released until Quarter 2. If you would like to see my stance on the whole beta subject, simply go back a few pages.

Actually, that last quote, I mistyped. I meant to say: "I don't think many people will pre-order to help the development of the game" which is what a Beta is for...

So if I don't buy it before it's released, I'm not supporting Chucklefish? Well excuse my dislike of paying to play games that aren't finished yet... :p

    DakoShark Pangalactic Porcupine

Well. I didn't mean it that way. But still. You wouldn't be paying to play the game, cause you don't have to play the beta if you want to wait, but it'd help the dev team to be able to produce the game faster. =P

As much as I hate pre-order betas, I honestly don't think I'll be able to contain myself. The first week, maybe I'll be like: "No." But after that I'll be like: "Play ALL the Starbound."

I'm very bad at self-control, ye know?

Noo... no... They may not have an obligation persay at this point, but they've been telling us "soon soon... soon... soon... soon..." and giving us results to tide us over. Yes they didn't say "it's going to be now but not really just kidding" but they have been saying for quite some time now "Oh don't worry we've got to just iron out some kinks it should be done soon..." and I think that justifies something more then a vague beta somewhere after Q1. Personally. That's just me. I'm not begging here trust me.

And beta's are all about bug squashing I have no idea what your talking about :p YES they ARE more then that, but -> ONE <- of the main reasons to have a beta at all, is to get huge playerbase help with bugs that are super hard to find, like herobrine for instance :p

Personally I think Tiy is probably the one to blame for pushing it back so far, they care about us an their reputation (in that order) enough that they ( I mean he I guess) Really wants to show us the sparkle and give us something perfect even in beta. He's very much a perfectionist and it shows really. The way I see it, he gets some part of the project done and then finds something else that he really wants to get ironed out then they add something new and by the time they have the other thing ironed out this new thing needs to be ironed out more so they push their date back more. It's fine really, I'd just like to help out by being a beta tester that's all.

Of course this is all entirely my opinion, subject to change at any moment in time etc etc.

Well. I do get what you're saying but I think that's more because they keep adding to the game to make it more then just average. So I'd rather them push it back to make the game as great as they can get it, rather then just accepting an average game and just giving it to everyone because they said it would be out. Like can you imagine the game if they had said, well, we said it'd be out at the stated date so we might as well give it to them. It wouldn't be as good as it's shaping up to be.

As for the beta's. Yes. I know that they are used for bugs, but that's mostly what closed betas are for. Open betas are much less about finding the bugs and more about publicity and testing server loads usually, since around open beta is when they have most of the game stable and working and it's just tweaking and testing server load. When it comes to pre-order betas, it's more to give the masses something until the game releases, otherwise they'd give us the whole buggy game to test rather then a limited sandbox portion. Since you know, can't really test for bugs when you don't have the full game. Otherwise, they'd just recruit some more people for closed beta and then release the game when it's ready rather then giving us something to play. Since this isn't an MMO, open beta isn't something that NEEDS to be done. As I said, open betas tend to be used for minor bugs and server load testing.

Was about to ask how/why Bartwe believes the beta is unlikely to be ready by Q1? Then I learned he's one of the programmers  saved myself much embarrassment there methinks!

So a matter of patiently waiting for further info/updates. All I can say is I'd be more than happy to pre-order at the first available opportunity.
