I've been thinking. When life give you le... Uh... I think I will play the beta, why should I wait so much if a beta release is already out? Minecraft also took it's long period of time to become the 'full game'. Though this beta MAY be released or MAY NOT be released. The dev just said 'maybe'.

IIRC, yes, they planned on doing it on Steam.

I don't know half of the promotional games yet this could be more popular than minecraft!

    First...

As I used to review games for a living, let me assuage this fear a bit. No reviewer worth his salt (ie. representing any reputable game news organization) would actually review a beta. If there are any articles at all concerning the beta form of the game, they will be labeled as "beta progress reports" or at worst "previews". Writers know not to form their opinions, nor the language of their articles, around the positive or negative aspects of a beta release.

That said, is it possible that some readers of these articles may erroneously take some of the opinions expressed as being representative of the final product? Yes. It's unfortunate, but still distinctly possible. As esteemed philosopher Ron White once said, "You can't fix stupid". However, I do think that both a beta, and any resulting media coverage for Starbound, will ultimately do more good than harm.

    Second...

To those concerned about the validity of this whole thing.... The lead developer said it's planned. No other developer should need to weigh in to confirm or deny what he said. Is it a guarantee? No. Plans change sometimes. But this kind of comment from the head of the project can certainly be read as, "It is the current intent of the developers to release a beta of Starbound to all who pre-order it, however we have no firm dates to offer at this time."

That's why I said pretty much. And I can't remember SpaceChem, FTL, Legend of Grimrock or SPAZ having a lot of issues.
It's usually the big budget games that are bug-infested. I'm looking at you, Bethsoft!

Well, Tiy hinted at a pre-order beta long before now, so while the confirmation is good news, it isn't exactly surprising.
I'm more interested in where and when the pre-order will be implemented; when Tiy will announce that publicly as "Official news".

Bethesda cannot escape their own success.
They tied themselves to that horribly buggy Gamebryo engine wayyyy back in Morrowind, and despite claims of having ditched it with Skyrim, they somehow keep repeating their old mistakes.

All of those had far less complicated game mechanics, AND they had bug patches after the fact anyway because yes, they had bugs. Sometimes CTD bugs in fact.

Less complicated game mechanics don't necessarily mean less complicated code. Transport Tycoon has far less complicated mechanics but was programmed in assembly, making it 100 times more complex than any modern indie title.

In assembly? Oh my lord. I didn't hate programming in assembly, but I only did simple math functions. A whole game in it? Holy crap. Load value, manipulate, compare, branch, store...argh!

Assembly language is not necessarily any more complex than a high-level language such as C++.
