Should a power supply be in starbound?

  1. Yes, and your ideas for generating it are good ones.

  2. Yes, but your plans for generating that power are too complex/too simple/not very good.

  3. No, because it is too annoying to micro-manage power supply

  4. No, because it would take away focus from other aspects of the game.

I’m not sure if this has been suggested before or if it has been officially confirmed in the game or not.
    But I’ll continue anyway.

A fair amount of this game is based on technology so it’s reasonable to suggest that there is a need to power it. I’m suggesting that there should be methods of generating power for use in your station.

I imagine that things like the orbital cannon would require a massive amount of power, and things like the research lab would need some energy for computers, etc.

    There could be plenty of ways to generate power; I listed some suggestions below;

Solar panels - the simplest way of generating power is through solar panels. A simple renewable way to power basic things in your space station.

The space station should be by default, already equipped with some solar panels so you start with some power, and can be expanded to generate more power. On planets only during the day would it would generate power but it would generate power 24 hours a day on the space station (due to it not needing to spin/orbit like planets do) and is much more efficient because it is closer to a star than if on a planet.

The efficiency of the solar cells should be very low at first, but as you gain access to more materials, research can be done to improve the efficiency.

Wind turbines - a simple means of powering things. While it can't be used on the space station, it would find uses on planets that don't get much sunlight. Or for the use of generating power during the night.

Fossil fuels - fossil fuels (coal, oil) are very good at generating energy quickly, and the power plants are very inexpensive to build, but the problem is mining to find the raw materials. It would be a good starting point for power generation, but as the fossil fuels become scarce newer methods would need to be explored. Alternatively you could make bio-fuel from plant matter to generate power, but bio-fuels give out less energy output.

nuclear fission power - uses uranium (needs to be purified from the ore into U-235) to generate a very large amount quickly, but if not properly maintained or is destroyed by an explosive, then the plant will cause a devastating explosion, for this reason all power stations would be done on planets to protect the station.

High energy crystals - provides a massive amount of power from each crystal and should be the most common way to power your plant.

By focusing a laser beam into the energy crystal, the power is drained from it, but it greatly amplifies the beams of the laser, and this amplification is as power. But needs power to generate the energy for the laser, so it cannot be created right away until enough power is stockpiled.

Nuclear fusion power - uses hydrogen as a raw material (is in atmosphere) and converts it into helium, the same way a star would do it. Generates a large amount of power and hydrogen is abundant enough in the air that the material is automatically taken in by the factory. But the high temperatures and pressure that needs to be generated consume a lot of energy, the overall output is less than that of E. crystals

Mass annihilation - mass can be annihilated to generate an insurmountable amount of power, and is the best of power generation technology. uses anything with a mass as fuel, (i.e. all the useless dirt etc. you have collected), the energy required to generate the anti-particles for the annihilation is quite massive so a huge stockpile of power is needed to start it off, but the power required pales in comparison to the power generated.

I honestly didn't expect to go in that much detail about this, sorry about that.

Comment and let me know what you think.

i like the idea, it would fit well into the game compared to dragons and stuff other ppl wantX3

Some ways of energy gathering seem unreasonable, like the mass annihilation. Because some items are meant to be rather useless, otherwise there woudn't be any useful ones! If you could zap power from everything, people would just throw stuff they don't need into the annihilator, and this would take something out of the game. also some ideas seem a little to compllicated for the standard player!

I was afraid that it would be too complex, especially considering the style of the game. But its sci fi kinda game and I felt I had too many "real world" power generators, and so I wanted to go a bit more futuristic on how it’s done.

I imagined that mass annihilator would be an "endgame" kinda item, but I see your point about it being too useful. Maybe it generates varying amounts of power depending on the item's value, but that could still cause the same problem.

    thanks for your feed back

I'll admit that some people on the forums have got some crazy idea's for this game, but strangely all of them wouldn't feel out of place in a game like this :alien:.
    thanks for the feedback

I like it. For once, the game could use some kind of "relevant building", that is, not only building for aesthetics or pure fun, but also because of necessity. You'd need power so you'd build power stations. Seems legit.

some weapons do have to be charged to work. battery charge is in the game. It seems it will basically be mana for things like lazer guns...see Here
