It basically does, but none of that matters when your save corrupts. The devs are working on optimising the game to steam and having saves stored online.

The autosave feature does not save the ship data file, or universe and world files, only the character file.
You'll keep your equipment your wearing, in your inventory, and hotbar. But you lose all other data, do to autosaving not yet having been truly implemented...

No, because always online means always online, nothing to do with cloud saves at all.

Starbound needs a backup system. Along with a better autosave system, maybe it can retain the last save or two, so in case one gets corrupted, there's another to fall back on.

Much better to lose a few things, than to lose everything.

Save File Corruption Protection is something that is usually standard in games.

Yeah this is a Beta, but this should be on the "DO THIS ASAP" list.

It is pretty simple to implement, an easy way to do it, is to have the game use a backup. When you save, you save to the working copy and the backup is, well, backed up on successful exit of the game.

If the game crashes while you play, the backup would be intact. If the game crashes while backing up, you still have the working save copy. Neither of these two should be written to simultaneously to prevent this kind of stuff from happening and it should fix nearly 100% of all save-related problems except for things like HDD failures (and even then, Steam Cloud would even fix that).

yeah that is what I originally thought, which is why mostly i was assuming in the way I did. I was drawing a comparison between what happened to my own ship to what happened to yours. Might I had to manually do it, while yours the game did it for you. In either case there was an error of some kind that happened. My case is more of a consistency error, where yours is a deletion or corruption error. Or is it the other way around... Either way those are the only things I can think of.

Reason I mentioned that last paragraph is that there are still a few multiplayer things that need fine tuning to work more efficiently. I wasn't imply you don't have a good server of your own, as that didn't pertain to that, just my own experience. What I was getting at is that the power failure interrupted a saving cycle between your computer and the server. Your english is better than mine, even if it is my primary language. >< So it is decent enough to understand better than my articulation, which i am not so good at.

that same saving cycle actually did something different to my file compared to yours. Mine is a direct latency saving error, as I do not know exactly what happened to the server I was on, even though it appeared to be online, as the game was still running. Might have been trying to play catch up to my computer, or the other way around. Regardless the server itself was bogged down to cause such a lagging error in the save.

This is the reason I say you were lucky it didn't do what has happened to me. Yours was reset by the game, due to possibly a communication error of some kind; if not similar. I have had my fair share of power drops in the past with other games, but those other games do not save in the same way that this or minecraft saves. reason I mention minecraft is because starbound has a similar way to save. Those both continuously read/write and keep track of such while you play. Hence not loosing progress much during game play in single player.

In multiplayer the server, client, and each they run off of has defining factors in which could contribute to the overall problems. Therefore the server and client computer have to continuously communicate in order to keep the progress. If abruptly disconnected from one another, that is when problems could persist or show itself even more. Basically most likely to get errors in saving.

I hope was able to clarify what I mean, as I mentioned, I tend to not be as articulate as some here are on the forums...:D

Yes this same exact thing happened to me once upon a time.

Power went out during the night, and when I got back on Starbound later, my character was still there. But my ship had been totally reset. The 3D printer still had the things I had scanned in, and my personal inventory was there. But my ship was reset entirely to default, all my game progress was lost ( bosses defeated, technology blueprints learned, etc ) and I was sitting above an Alpha world where I had been in a much later sector before.

Seems if this happens you loose all game progress, world progress, everything, except your personal inventory, and your 3D printer.

The only thing to say is make sure you back up your saved character file. Other than that, yea, if your PC shuts off, or the power goes out while you're playing, expect the worst.

I've also still all my Scan (fortunaly , i've spend the biggest part of my time in game to find/scan items).

Ive still have my world too , my tech , infact it's like only lose the ship.

It's ""funny"" , because on this forum , if you stop write text during post the forum save the post for prevent lose of it "draft saved".... the forum is protect but not the game ? x)

    sorry for bad english again

Edit : i'm in my game folder , someone can say me what is the file i must copy for keep alive the few data still ok please ?

(will do same things after make again the ship after)

Only thing to really be done for it on the devs end would be a save and continue button in addition to save and quit which would be nice but is incredibly low priority. As for the power outage shoulda had a surge protected UPS with battery back up. Pretty essential thing when you live somewhere that storms alot. We've a saying around here "Welcome to Florida. If you don't like the weather wait ten minutes. It'll change."

In the players there will be 3 files per character. player, metadata, and shipworld I believe.
To figure out which is which open the player file in a text editor of some kind. Your characters name should be in that file sometimes at top of file and sometimes near bottom.

Once character file known, then take note of the file #, as that will be the same for all 3 files.

The Universe can be backed up by simply saving a copy of the Universe folder somewhere, however no guarantee that will always work with each update. But most likely should.

This sounds like a problem with some really simple solutions: auto-save the ship file, and use renaming to keep backup/recovery files during the save process in case your active save is corrupted. Hopefully the developers will take this into account while they're working on syncing saves with Steam.

unless i miss my guess on what is happening, the world file is open as an "active file" in starbound when the world is loaded into memory. your ship is always loaded into memory.

if an "active file" is open and the program exits before it can properly close the file, the file in question will be corrupted or "blanked out".

now it is not too difficult to tell a program to make a copy of a file, but the difficult part is telling the program when to "restore from backup", especially if the file in question is not deleted outright.
