[Post-Release] FTL like space-combat where you man the stations.

"camaraderie" might be the word you're looking for, I wasn't aware that it was spelled that way either. Maybe this forum could even have a team. Applications for certain roles, starting off as engineers and eventually retiring as a captain to make your own fleet.

Meanwhile, pretty much every factor of Starbound is pretty awesome. Let's just say we're a group of really cruel space pirates. We could possibly use Novakids as fuel!

 

I love this concept, and I hate to be *that* guy on this one, but this sounds like it would totally bone the single player or pair. Imagine FTL with only one or two crew?
Might I suggest something from the old BattleStations boardgame (which anyone who likes FTL owes it to themselves to play at least once), a character at a station in one part of the ship can control another station remotely at a slight penalty. The engineer for instance could, in theory, fire the guns from an engine room if the marine was busy fighting boarders. I say in theory because in practice an engineer is WAY too busy all over the ship keeping the thing together with duct tape and fervent prayer. The game also had rules for bots that could act as limited players and perform most simple tasks.

But ya, a way for small crews or single captains to actually manage multiple stations is needed if the game goes this route.

 

I think the expanded ships would work well in space battles tho

 

If there was one, large, official server for Starbound, this idea would be amazing. I can imagine People racing to fully build up their ships and recruiting several other players to raid and battle other ships. Imagine fleet battles!

yea, that's probably a bit of a stretch, but regardless, this is a great idea

 

Oh man, that sounds like a lot of fun. Taking on a humongous ship piloted by Big Ape or something alongside a bunch of friends would be an awesome endgame experience.

I can imagine this would be a really fun challenge. Since you play as a character in Starbound and not a ship as in FTL, I think this mode would be more similar to Guns of Icarus.

 

I'll just imagine our little character relentlessly and hopelessly trying to man an entire ship by themselves.

Human: "Well... crap."
Floran: "FLORAN REGRET EXERYTHING!"
Glitch: "Hopeless. I'm doomed."
Hylotl: "Perhaps I should have tried the peaceful approach."
Apex: "I regret never having got to try that banana sundae."
Avian: "Kluex, if you're real, forgive me."
Novakid: "I regret nothing."

I hope you will be able to jump ship. Because that is what i will do. First sign of any trouble. Like... oxygen generator takes a point of damage or something and i will be like "abandon ship!" and leave everyone to die without me. Many funs. In fact, if possible, i will loot the ship for parts before leaving. I heard that is a thing to do in such situations. You loot stuff and flee and hope you live so you can sell the stuff you stole.

 

Enjoy either

a.) Spiraling into the cold, oxygen-lacking, never ending void of space
b.) Being pulled into a planet by gravity, eventually burning up in the atmosphere and/or crashing to your death (assuming you didn't burn to death first)

 

Only if we get jetpacks to fly around with. :]

 

Well... I spent way too much time trying to see if that was perfectly looped. Sadly is was almost if the cursor did not appear for just a few frames.

I should play more FTL.

 

I rather imagine the Novakid's last words being more along the lines of:

"All systems failing, life support systems off-line! ... Oh. Oh hey, what does this button d-"

 

How about we get all the base game and stretch goal content in before we bother with extraneous possible post-game features.

We're still in phase 1 of beta, if we're even still doing phases.
