Hello Starbound community! I was wondering if the devs had considered arranging alternatives to steam for downloading/purchasing Starbound. I noticed my code was supplied from the folks at the humble store. Will this mean we could perhaps download it from humble? I would love that option. Don't get me wrong, I love steam now, tough it has had its share of problems. If that we can, will this also mean we might have other alternatives such as Green Man Gaming, Desura, Gamersgate, an GOG.com? (they actually do sell newer titles, including indies) I would gladly pay again if i have to, though it would be better if i could just ener my current code. Just curious here, and feel free to post your thoughts, and concerns (if any).
It's just about Pre-Order now. When BETA comes out, is possible that they will launch it on Steam (early access games) for example. Or add the Pre-Order itself that steam also handles. You wont download the game from the Humble Store, that is supplied by Starbound when the BETA arrives, Humble Store does not make such things. For the game will be on Steam at Launch, that's for sure.
Do you mean that Humble doesn't provide downloads for alphas/betas? If so you are wrong. On my Humble list there is Overgrowth (wich is currently in Alpha) is available to download there. Also I would really prefere to be able to download through Humble. Because of the bad sides of Steam I have experienced. I really really hope (and I think they will) make it downloadable through Humble.
About Steam there is one thing, the best place to buy games, since it as easy payments forms for who doesn't own credit/debit cards. About Humble, you did buy the game in Humble, but didn't linked to any any account or such thing. Then Starbound is Free to add their Own Download site and Accounts. There is going to be an Auth Server, You create your account with your key (may work also for beta, we still don't know that) and you login into game.
I'd love to see Starbound come to GOG as well, they're my favorite retailer, I'd buy it again from them.
Yes steam might be great to buy stuff with all the payment methods. But I'd like to download my bought games. And with steam thats not possible for me since it needs a few ports opened, which are not gonna opened by the admin where I am (at home, admin=stepfahter). Well in humbke my bought copy is linked to my humble account. But you are right, there is the problem, that you don't have to have an account there to buy stuff. But I also thought there would be a DRM free version. I already bought terraria and don't starve on steam and pirated it to be able to play. Don't want that to be neccesary for Starbound too. But thats just my single case.
Not DRM in Starbound. Far bartwe said, there will be an Auth server, you may link your Copy to Starbound and that's it. You will still enter Offline, and able to do Offline LAN games. An Master-Server to logins and such things would overload easy and may cause the game to have downtime when it isn't an Online game/MMO.
Why would your stepfather deliberately block steam ports....? You could of course go to a friend or somewhere with free internet and download the games you want. The game most probably will have a "activate once" DRM, where you will enter your account or key. Then you will be able to play without anything getting in your way. Of course steam is it's own DRM, but you can just download the none-steam version from here. Personally I like steam since I can use it's built-in friends system to annoy my friends about the game while playing the game and being unable to decide what to do!
Well I was sued for software piracy through torrents, and after that he blocked the ports and every attempt to ask him to open non p2p related ports (Just like steam or Xbox live) just got more or less ignored with a statement similair to "I get arround without them, why don't you". In fact there are NO ports open but 80 and 443. That pretty much sucks -.- Yeah just did that and know what, now Steam thinks it's funny to tell me there is no saved login-data, so i can't start it in offline mode. Which I was able to just a few days back. Well at least i discovered Desura and such through not being able to use Steam. But like I said its just my single case and I don't want that thread to be just about me, so if we could stop that here. Thanks for the tips and stuf though.
Awch, that sucks. Though isn't it possible to make torrents run on those 2 ports? Should be as long as your ISP allows it. Not trying to tell you to pirate stuff, but let your stepfather know if you wanted to pirate things you could find a work around, and that he shouldn't limit your access to things you actually buy, cause that just encourages you to pirate. Or you could move out/pay for your own internet connection. But that depends on your age. Anyway, let's not hiijack the thread, good luck with your problems.
Ah, so the Steam key is just if we want to activate on steam, and I DO have other options, thank you, and thanks everyone else for replying =^_^=
I hope they release a standalone version too. I dislike steam because its all 'You Have Slow Internet, Hummmm... NOPE!' to me, which puts me off any game client, although the Ubisoft, u-play, isn't to bad when it comes to that scenario. The only reasons i would get it on steam is: To Back-up My Purchase If Standalone isn't available If Standalone Doesn't Support LAN Play, If Standalone Doesn't Support Online Play (in case i get better internets) If Standalone is behind, and always behind on updates.
