This is a "built-in" tool (like the Matter Manipulator, Paint Gun and Wiring Tool) which allows you to scan in furniture objects, similar to the 3D Printer. However, it differs by costing four times as much to scan, but does not destroy the object, nor does it need it in your inventory. This allows scanning of currently inaccessible furniture, such as Outpost furniture (and maybe it can also scan certain blocks?).
I would say two or three times more to scan. Also, small note: The normal doors in the first mission are completely unscannable. Everything else is.
I'm torn. If the devs were to consider this, I would like them to do this idea. However, if they weren't willing to do it like this, I'd settle for it destroying the object and costing maybe twice as much. I've pilfered many a citadel or village for all their super nice furniture and ended up with a full inventory very fast which really bogs me down. Having to stop and haul it all back to the ship's 3D printer is pretty annoying and tedious.
