Its true. :p as the creator of one of the scissor blades, its done via drawables. In theory the easiest way to limit it would be to put a hard limit on the drawables. Would suck to lose the option to customize weapons further this way, it is understandable if its being abused like this though.

Can confirm that on my own experience.... Means I am literally using one of those nasty images on TF2 when playing spy... mostly a Gardevoir with serious potassium shortage is used... and guess we all know what fruit contains lots of potassium...

I don't understand why client-installed mods are able to leak into server side when it effects said server side.

If this hasn't already been taken into account I think server functions should have the ability to check for modded clients and allow the server owner to deny or accept a player's entry if they're modded. Modded weapons and blocks shouldn't even be able to leak across servers but, well, they do.

Can anyone provide a proof of concept? You don't need pornographic images, you just need to create a mod that can display an arbitrary, obviously-not-in-the-game-files image on another user's vanilla client, generated ingame. Preferably that is all the mod does so that it's easy to look in it and see that it is indeed a generated image.

Also, giving connection details for the griefed server in question so it's possible to validate it as a harmful exploit would be great and not at all illegal.

Exposure of a minor to pornography is illegal in most first- and second-world countries?

Not to mention, you know, CP.

you can easy fix this by limited the number of drawables a weapon/armor can use
maybe alimit of 5ish should do the trick
i hope you fix this as soon as posable
i hate crashing from idiots with hundreds of drawables on there weapons

Just so you folks know, we have another instance of erotic imagery appearing in game, but this time as a modded weapon.

The weapon's appearance was altered to look like an unfortunately disrobed Kyren in a position that would allow animations to appear as if the user was... using the weapon. *coughs*

How am I supposed to deal with this? If the devs would like a link to the picture, then you're welcome to it.

Hopefully you get an official response... but I'm guessing as Molly wanted the goatse screenshot for evidence she probably wouldn't freak out if you sent that to her in a PM with proper labeling. If you don't want to take the risk, you can send it to me and I'll forward it as part of the PM chain we already had over this issue. I suspect they are aware of the weapon json data method by now as those mods are becomming widespread.

It would help an awful lot if you had I dunno, the server address / mods needed (though you've implicated this is vanilla) so we can verify that this is a thing that happens?

You can do it for weapons, really easily. The rocket launchers use 3 sprites for the 3 different parts, that way you see you can use multiple sprites for one weapon and set a different position for every sprite. Using said ash particle sprite and using the set color tag, you can import virtually every 24 bit picture into starbound, if you find a tool to transform the picture file into nicely formatted JSON, then you can just use starcheat to put it into your inventory. If anyone doesn't believe it, try it out, it isn't rocket science.

I'm not sure how much clearer I can say this.

I for one am not about to go on a goose hunt and codemonkey up a theory that hasn't been proven to me, if it's happening in the game right now then all you have to do is give us a goddamn server address so we can connect and see it ourselves!

Try it out yourself, as I said, it isn't rocket science. I don't know IF it is happening anywhere, but I proved THAT it is possible, which is essential in the first place. I showed you how to reproduce it, anyone can prove it now.

This is a great explanation and easy to reproduce on a small scale. I don't know what tool pumps out the nicely formatted JSON, but it wouldn't be hard to write a bimtap->JSON tool in practice, so I'm sure one exists out there somewhere. We don't really need a tool to prove this method though. It is easy enough to extrapolate that if you can arrange 25 ash particles to make a 5x5 image in a test, you could do the same 10000 pixels for 100x100 image and so on.

I've seen many reports and even screenshots where people are posting temporary images with weapon shots. The devs already know of this method though, so I expect they'll patch it out in time.

In theory, it should be possible to shield a server from this with a wrapper, but in practice, we don't know enough about the data structures passed up in the client connect packet, which contains the player data (including items) and shipfile. Either the devs should give us that information or give us protection against insane modded junk. *que up a beta screamer*
