Mass-smelting and other polluting activities done in large enough numbers (imagine hundreds of players on the same planet) could increase the rate of disasters or simply change a planet's climate, even render the atmosphere unbreathable.

Even related to the addition of planetary events, meteor strikes and excessive volcanic activity could change the face of a planet and its climate quite violently.
