All we really know about the Hylotl is that they're peaceful but kinda reclusive. I like them because I think they're elegant, but that's mostly based off fanart.

I thought I wasn't gonna like the Glitch at first, but the sheer variety in their customisation options won me over rather quickly. Some of these races really defied my expectations.

You don't want to play as an ape? What about Humans? Will you play as a human?

Exactly my point! The other races are good and different, but Humans and Apex? Too similar.

I dislike the Hylotl though that is mainly because the complete lack of information on them.
    and i actually like the apex ;_;

I also have issues with most of the other races but it is mostly nitpicky stuff
I hate it that most of the races use breasts of female attribute since it really doesnt makes sense for most of the races
The glitch and the florans have no gender and breasts would be useless for them. The avians and the hylotl are not mammals so i have no idea what the hell is going on with them. bleeeeeh

No, that they have released nearly nothing about them.

Personally, I enjoy all the races. They are unique if not in form than in story, and for a lore-monger like me I'm happy with that. :)

Floran because they eat everyone, good thing they probably can't digest steel.

At risk of speaking on behalf of her, fetalstar would likely agree with you on the breast front. She actually draws the florans without them and if I remember correctly avian sprites lack them entirely. I'd check, but college internet browser don't riek character gen.

I actually don't understand the Florans not having a gender. Even plants have gender, or parts with gender. A lot of plants have both gender parts, but are situated in a way that doesn't allow them to self pollinate. So why don't Florans have gender? Only certain head types even have a flower... so are the other types like ferns?
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/plants/printouts/floweranatomy.shtml Diagram of a normal flower's reproduction parts. It has both male and female, but the male "anther" are usually lower than the stigma, meaning that the flower uses insects or the wind to breed with other flowers.
Sorry for the rant, but it confuses me about their lack of gender. If nothing else, why didn't Starbound say they're "both"?

I can also understand the "breast" issue for them and the Avians. As far as I know there aren't any birds with mammary glands, or the Hylotl (some of the heads seem axalotl-like, which are a type of mexican salamander and is close to the name) probably wouldn't either.
Unfortunately, evolution doesn't always move in the ways expected. And maybe mammary evolution is something that all "top-of-the-food-chain" species evolve to keep their young close and protect them? Just because the races look like something, since they evolved on another planet looks may be literally the only similarity they have.
Wow... this was a lot longer than I meant to write when I started.

I just checks and the avians have breasts. big ones apparently? whyyyy

That would be more appropriate. When i said genderless i meant in comparison to humans which in retrospect is still poorly thought out. I believe the term they actually use is unisex which is good but the sprites dont reflect the lore :/

I guess that would make sense? Screw it ill accept it. It not bad enough to make me hate the game i just find it a little annoying.

If they changed this then i would prolly like all the species more. Just seeing humans with odd skin colors doesnt really say alien to me. I know it is mostly because of sprite limitation but they could use different signs of gender then boobs.

You're right, they wrote unisex. I read that so long ago that I remember when it was a "New Update". I followed the picture from another forum to Starbound and fell in love.

Even without the sprite limitations what would be a better way to say female? You can't really use the face, because most male "elfin" type faces are prettier than human women supposedly (male blood elves being the worst). Honest question, though... I'm curious.

for me the apex, because its like and humen with more hair... :S

  17. They did want to have florans and such without breasts, but I remember it being a coding issue that was simpler to resolve by just having the breasts there.
It'd be troublesome to have to make two sets of equips for breasted and breastless races. <:c

Hard call, I'd say it's a close thing between the Glitch and the Humans.

Glitch have an interesting robot aesthetic going on, but their lore is almost totally nonsense. I can accept the whole 'stuck in the middle ages due to programagic' schtick, but why are they always armed with swords and axes? Why do they fashion armor and clothing for themselves, instead of preforming chassis upgrades? Why do they use torches instead of electric lights, if they can fashion some kind of electric lighting to install in new glitch? What is it about their programming that turns them into robot copies of a fleshy life form, instead of actual artificial life?

And the humans having no lore (so far?) is disappointing. I can understand the desire to make them a default vanilla choice anyone can pick up, but unless the setting is going to be hand-waved as 'our era' They need a bit of lore to tell us about their society. Do they come from an Earth/earth-like planet that embraced globalization and the free market? If so, they should probably have a riotous collection of personal style options, piercings, implants, and tattoo options, as well as just all kinds of clothing options from near-current to silly 70's sci-fi. Do they instead come from a euro-socialist utopia, a-la Star Trek? The trekkie uniform aesthetic is over-used and pretty bland, but it could be a jumping off point to create a unified and distinctive look for the race as a whole.

As for the Apex: remember, they weren't becoming apes because those were the peak of intellectual evolution, they TRADED physical form for intellectual advancement. And they're the race with the most interesting (currently) theme behind them: Russian/Germanic sci-fi military uniform and architecture could be very fun to work with.

Probably the fact that they were a test BASED on fleshy lifeforms. It's technically possible they see themselves as living beings and don't see their bodies as "upgradable". A computer is only as good as it's programming, and the lore literally says they think and feel the desires of other sentient organisms. Even though they "build" their children, they could be programmed to believe that that's a natural way for children. They may even be surprised that other races have children in such a "messy" way. And the swords and axes are because their tech level seems stuck where their minds are. So swords, maces, axes... maybe catapults depending on where in the middle ages they are...
If you read all of it, it actually states that the ones that learn they're not living beings or advance beyond the middle ages are actually hunted and executed. Probably the medieval "witch hunt" mentality for anyone that was overly intelligent and didn't have the money to defend themselves.

No, I realize that about the outcast Glitch, and sure, they feel the desires of living organisms, but they're not. They're made of metal. So, they rust. They have all these little knobby bits and different flanges and outgrowths, so armor can't possibly be standardized, and once again, they're made of metal, so what's a sword gonna do to them? They should really all be sporting hammers and morning stars, maybe picks, things designed to get through the metal skin.

And I guess you could say the metal structure is thin and anti-corrosive, and not much stronger than thick skin, but at that point you run into all sorts of problems inherent to weak, rigid structures that flesh doesn't have.

I guess my complaint comes more from the lack of thought that seems to be put into the concept past 'medieval robots, cool'. Robots and steampunk and medieval tech-fantasy are all awesome, but a race of robots stuck in the middle ages who think they're human don't really make the same kind of sense. What are they farming? If they have an internal system for digesting what we think of as food into component elements and power, cool, but wouldn't they just be eating whatever plants they choose at that point? Do they farm specialized test 'markers' that are bio-engineered to provide them with the right mix of nutrients and energy and keep them going? How does any other race eat this stuff? How do they handle shock, like from particularly bad thunder storms ionizing the area? Do they have a cult of the body that guards the knowledge of the internals, and tend to the wounded and the infirm? Do Glitch age and die? Or do they simply replace parts as they fail?
