I'll agree it is possible to tamper with our genes to the point where we would start to resemble Apex, but it would do nothing for us in terms of intelligence. Furthermore it'd be far more a simplistic endeavor to increase human intelligence without turning us back into a primitive evolutionary form.

You say that as if you believe the Apex were once Human...
    Which they weren't...
The Apex looked Similar to Humans, but were a totally different species. The ape-like creature that said species evolved from could have had a skull that could house a more complex brain, or the apex could have brought said changes about through science.

Perhaps it's advantageous to resemble an Ape lesser than ourselves. I, for one, would love to have an extra pair of prehensile appendages, even if they were used for walking the majority of the time.

Perhaps, but possibly not to the extent of which the Apex increased their intellect.

It isn't more advantageous though, hence why we evolved the way we have. Furthermore the first bipedal species we are related to had feet very similar to ours. Any further than that and the Apex wouldn't be bipedal anymore.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Based on the backstory the Apex somehow found the secret to intelligence in our own prehistoric junk DNA no longer used by modern day humans. It makes no sense.

Considering it's artificial speciation though, it doesn't necessarily have to be advantageous just convenient and/or desirable. For example, people who intensely modify their bodies to have horns, or similar. It doesn't bring an advantage, but because it isn't naturally-occurring, it doesn't necessarily have to. Eventually, we'll be able to modify our genes to become more or less whatever we want to be.

Firstly, this isn't how they explain the Apex though. It literally states they reverted to a previous evolutionary form.
Secondly, the gene for handlike feet isn't tied to the genes for all other apelike features. If they truly just wanted the advantageous, why take on everything about the ape? Theres a reason humans are the dominant species, there is a lot wrong with modern day apes. (excluding humans)

Fine, but again, that isn't what the devs said the Apex were doing. They went on some ill-advised quest to turn themselves back into a previous evolutionary form, if they'd truly succeed there would have been societal collapse and on the planet of origin you would've found an ancient human ancestor foraging for food and running from larger predators. Becoming a previous evolutionary state wouldn't in any way enhance our intelligence, the current Apex backstory is inadequate.

Even if thats the case Arch-mage it doesn't change the fact that devolution into a previous evolutionary state wouldn't make a species smarter.

EDIT: I think we're also missing a detail here. If they have the technology to manipulate genes to such an extent, why on earth do they need to trade physical evolution for intellectual? Can't they just artificially increase both their intelligence and physical capability?

Natural evolution finds a way that works, artificial evolution is a means of finding the best way possible. I'd argue the Apex chose an unnecessarily complex and just plain idiotic way of doing it.

I do actually agree that they need some sort of revision on their lore. It won't be the end of the world for me if they don't, but I would like to see it.

Anyways, it's late, and I have school tomorrow. This has actually been a good argument. It's been a pleasure talking with you. :)

    Well, goodnight everybody!

I really dislike the floran's due to male and female really look the same, or just a female race all togeather!

Apex, mostly for the aesthetics and back-story.

Its been great talking to you too, have a good night.

And I agree, the lore needs revision, as it is currently it paints this unrealistic race and its difficult to reconcile with it. They'd be better off claiming natural evolution lead to the Apex rather than try to explain it the way they have.

I don't know if it matters to you, but Florans are actually unisex...

I guess either you or me could put up a thread in the Suggestions subforum and request a minor revision as to how the Apex became the way they are, while still keeping their culture intact. Maybe I will tomorrow, if you don't want to. However, if you do want to, then feel free to go ahead!

  20. Sousuke Kuroda

Ah you can do it, I'm not too good at constructing threads, but yeah that sounds good. I never had a particular issue with the culture, it really was just the way the species came into being.

That being said I still probably wouldn't play as one xD
