Human- simply because this game has so many cool races with so much varied lore that I wanna be something a bit more unique-ish. :)

Before our knowledge of genetics there was a chance we were wrong about evolution. Nothin is going to change in a few thousand years, we've got evolution nailed down, most new discoveries concerning it have nothin to do with humans. Furthermore we are apes and the most intelligent thing we know of at the moment, my problem is intelligent great apes excluding humans who haven't evolved with a dependence on intelligence and aren't likely to. You may think its cool, I think it's absurd.

Hylotl. Maybe because of lack of information about them. And fins on heads...
Before we got Apex background - they ware my least favorite race :p

I know Novakid is a fairly good race, but I dislike them the most, excluding humans though, because they'll lose any poll.

Meh. Scientifically, it is absurd, yes. However I am willing to let go of science in order to play a game.

And again, they were human, however invented a machine to advance their own intelligence. Is it possible? Not really, but I still find it an interesting idea.

You know, it's easier to enjoy yourself if you stop hating everything that isn't 100% scientifically accurate. And as far as I'm concerned, this game is chock-full-of scientific inaccuracies, why is it that you single out the Apex as the one to hate the most?

Easier for you maybe, don't try to speak for me. I happen to enjoy a game that is scientifically sound, I can just suddenly decide that I'm ok with every little thing that irritates me. I'm not willing to abandon established science simply because "it's a game".

I will accept an explanation featuring technology we don't understand, but we understand evolution. Humans weren't ever chimps or gorillas and there's nothing to gain in terms of intelligence by "reverting" to a previous evolutionary form, not to mention completely impossible.

So by your logic, you only enjoy movies, books, TV shows, and video games that are 100% scientifically accurate?

Jesus Christ, how do you have fun?

Also, theoretically, we could be wrong about ANYTHING. Literally any knowledge we know as "true" can be proven false in the future. There is always more to discover and learn, and almost all of it can change our understanding of nearly everything.

No, when did I say that? I criticize within reason. I'm not going to watch Harry Potter and diss it because it isn't scientifically accurate, because its fantasy. Starbound is a science fiction game, before you say "Yes, FICTION." please don't. The apex could still have been added with some level of scientific accuracy simply by making them the distant ancestors to apes and chimpanzees. It is entirely possible that they could have been artificially or naturally selected to eventually develop an upright posture, larynx/pharynx capable of speech and brain capable of sentient thought that way, after all, the Hominidae did. However they went with one of the more roundabout and impossible methods, why? I don't think its interesting at all, I hear "reverted their evolution" and think "Oh god."

Stay on topic, we aren't discussing how I enjoy life, we're talking about the Apex and my issue with them. I'm a realist and a scientist above all else, I will criticize when necessary and even though I may be irritated by some aspects I can still enjoy a game. I'm just not going to play as an Apex and probably slaughter any I find. Thats how I have fun.

I have to say I'm sick of this argument, yeah we could be wrong about everything but the chance is so highly unlikely that its negligible. There is so much evidence in support of the vast majority of knowledge we have thus far concerning human evolution that the chances of us being wrong are very, very slim. If evidence popped up to prove us wrong, great, but considering its been two centuries and theres nothing yet to disprove the model of human evolution we've constructed thus far, and that even the advent of our understanding of genetics hasn't yielded anything to the contrary, I think its fair to say we aren't wrong about this.

I don't like the Apex for multiple reasons, but the backstory is the main one. They tried to explain it through science and so I'm going to criticize it with science.

  9. Personally I'd prefer the pinnacle of intelligence to be a cephalopod. It's frustatingly human-centric to think that humans are somehow destiny manifest.
Our race happened upon the path to intelligence in the evolutionary contest, doesn't make us special or chosen ones.

Why not? Tiy himself said on the Reddit AMA today that it is more of a Fantasy game than a hard-sci-fi one.

I just cannot vote on this one. All of the races bring something awesome to the table.
It seems most people don't like the Apex...

I like the Apex least, though that's not to say I dislike them, just prefer the others over them.

They invented a machine allowed the Apex to trade physical devolution for intellectual evolution.
I really don't get why you have a problem with this, many science fiction Shows/games/books use technology that couldn't exist irl.

They've got hair that'll keep them warm in snow. Plant men? They'll wilt and die. Kiddy pool race? Easily freeze to death. Humans? They worry more about temperature. Robots? They'll crack from the temperature. Baby suns? They'll just turn into a cold pile of a star.

Don't get me started on birds.

Please, don't associate us apes with the lesser "monkeys."

And as I said before, technically, you are an Ape, so, wouldn't you saying Primates (which is what I assume you meant by "monkeys") suck be saying you suck as well?

Most of the time its because they function on a principle we don't yet understand. Physical devolution for intellectual evolution? Not to mention evolution into a species that Humans evolved alongside rather than directly from. How does that make any sense to you? Seriously, how on earth does that make sense. If it was true physical devolution they wouldn't start to look like chimps, they'd be naturally weak and small with large heads. The best way to describe a species that would have undergone something like that is a Grey.

Its a concept with no basis in science. Its made more annoying by the fact that there is a much more realistic explanation in which the Chimps/Gorillas were met with conditions that demanded greater intelligence and they hence evolved to be bipedal and sentient, but instead they went with a machine that turns humans into lesser apes that are inexplicably more intelligent somehow.

I'd also like to add that a human skull is specially evolved to house a more complex brain whereas an ape skull would be a detriment in this. There is no part of this concept that makes any sense, that is my problem with it.

EDIT: Without meaning to be mean to anyone it seems like the kind of idea born of someone with a very, very basic knowledge of Evolution. To the point where they hold the misconception that humans evolved from modern day apes.

Who says the Apex are Chimps or Gorillas? I don't think it was worded as eloquently as it could have been, however the VED (or whatever it's called) just sounds like a method of voluntary, artificial speciation. I'm sure that we could quite possibly be capable of bringing speciation upon ourselves in the future.
