I was just curious how the inventory is going to work in the game and thought I would get some others opinions.

Terraria became a nightmare in the later stages where your inventory filled up just getting to the cave you were exploring due to the amount of stuff to collect/carry around. It sounds like Starbound is going to have even more and it could become cumbersome fast.

Personal vote is unlimited. I think it takes away from the adventure/exploring/immersion if you have to be destroying or managing inventory every few minutes because it fills up to fast. Having to make return trips to store and offload inventory becomes very time consuming and annoying very quickly (if your like me and a pack-rat).

I understand why there is size restrictions in a lot of games as they are required, but in a game weighted heavy on collecting, exploring and finding everything you can get your hands on, I think it would take away from the immersion to be micro-managing inventory all the time.

    I voted other.
I would prefer a finite on-character storage, and some sort of system to beam stuff up to your ship into some large (possibly unlimited) pile that you can sort when you get back to the ship.

Inventory limitations can be frustrating, but useful for game balancing. Having a quick way to offload extra things for more space is good, as long as going and getting different things still takes time.

You want to minimize the 'ug, I just got here and I am already full', while still maintaining the 'hmm, should I bring the lazer sword or the rocketgun down with me?' feel.

Stole the thoughts from my head but couldn't put on paper. I completely agree, it's hard to find that balance of not being annoying but maintaining that important decision of what to bring (which I fully support).

I Really like your idea of having something to beam stuff up to your ship where you have an unlimited cargo hold. Maybe make it a craftable item so it comes into effect a little later in the game. Makes it so you can offload your inventory with little to no hassle but maintain that "characters inventory space is precious" mentality. Gets you the best of both worlds, great idea!

I wouldn't want a limit on with weight, but weight in the game would awesome, especially with armor. Say you were an archer and had to be quick, you'd need to have light leather armor. But if your a warrior and had really strong heavy armor, you'd go really fast. *goes off to the suggestion thread*

OT: I think I'd want to be able to expand my inventory, just to give me something to do that's not really tedious but is quite helpful. :p

  6. It would be nice to have an easily toggled option for what type of things to automatically pickup or manually pickup.

Something like a "pick up blocks [automatically] [manually]" option would be awesome.

I am pretty sure the actual inventory system will be limited.
As stated they do not want you to be able to carry like 5 sets of armour to switch out as you please, they want you to have to go back to your base and choose strategically which items to take on your person.

i would kind of like it the same as tarraria or like when you harvest something have the option of sending it to your base or keeping it or something like that

I really like the limited inventory with itemsize like in Diablo and DeusEx but I guess it will not be in the game because you can collect to much stuff. Then I would like a limited inventory and items have got weight. I also like the idea that you can call a droid or your spaceship so it picks up items on the surface (spaceship) and in caves (little robot/droid...maybe like ED-E in Fallout:NV) while the spaceship has unlimited storage and the droid limited. But then there is the problem that you have to click a item to pick it up and you can't just simply walk over it because you would probably pick up items you don't want...

I actually was thinking of something like that a couple days ago, and it's a great idea! I always loved the '' what armor/weapon should I bring?'' or Terraria too.

And the beaming option should be some sort of upgrade, it shouldn't be available from the beginning.

Devs should consider this possibility! :D

It seems I voted like 50% others, for the "Limited - Static Size, Expandable. (above but can find/craft extra bags/slots)" option. Having a limited inventory, that you're able to expand by wearing certain armor, accessories and such, would seem like a pretty good idea :) If you can upgrade/get better versions of everything, why not the inventory as well? :D the "Bags" system of many games, would be a viable option, too.

  12. A.N.T.I.

    A.N.T.I. Spaceman Spiff

Remember that inventory system from diablo where certain items take up more inventory space then others? To be perfectly honest I'd love to see something like that. It's not necessarily a weight system, but it does limit the amount of objects you can carry in a good way. Armors take up alot of space, weapons take up a long amount of space, and regulars mob dropped items take up an average amount of space.

Item size, that would make the game different from the other sandbox games like Minecraft or Terraria.

I like the Borderlands system so I voted for it :)

  15. Valkoor Moonblood

    Valkoor Moonblood Existential Complex

I'd like it to be similar to the Terraria inventory, but with a way of expanding it like a backpack, or item transporter. Something even nicer would be a Storage Cube type thing. Has anyone ever seen Jimmy Neutron? Similar to that kind of storage cube.

  16. Spectralysis

    Spectralysis Void-Bound Voyager

I voted for the item size system because I believe the player should be limited in some fashion to the ammount of heavy weapons and items of the sort we are able to carry.I feel like a weight system would rely heavily on stats and as we're not sure as to how stats would work, i voted for size.

  17. Madmarlon

    Madmarlon Pangalactic Porcupine

Well I voted for expandable static size and I just wanted to say that there are screenshots which look like the inventory uses that system.

I don't know which pic came first or if theses inventory layouts have been updated already, but I think I read somewhere that the inventory space can be expanded by finding extra bags, containers, etc.
