On the other hand.... how would you deal with choosing whether to place blocks in the background or foreground is you had another item in the other hand's slot?
I mean, it would likely mean that if you put the block in the right mouse button slot, you could only place them in the background because your left click would be over-ridden by whatever item would be whatever item you'd put in the left mouse button slot, no?

Just wondering, because the ability to set a block as foreground with a left click or in the background with just a right click is specifically the sort of ease of use that make the game popular with builders in the first place.

Also technically, when you're using blocks, you're not placing the blocks by hands themselves... you're using the matter manipulator and whatever complex controls it possesses that might require to use both hands in the first place.

This is really over-dramatic; for the most part this game is better than its ever been and the hot-bar isn't the worst thing to ever happen, its just imperfect. I'm really fed up of people posting over-dramatic stuff like this, saying the games ruined when these developers have put a lot of thought and effort into molding starbound into a great game, BOO-HOO the game isn't what YOU wanted it to be, i suppose that means that you may as well treat your opinion as fact and keep posting on this forum how much the game is ruined (which is only your opinions) hoping, like a spoiled child, that the devs will see it and think "oh you know what, we'll throw away all the hard work we've put into this game, to go back to an old outdated piece of shit version of the game, because a small percentage of the fan-base cant stand change and experimentation" Just a little rant for those of you who keep making a mountain out of a mole hill, like this guy :)

Nearly all discussion in this thread has been constructive criticism, save for a few isolated posts. To go with that, just because the devs put a lot of work into something doesn't mean its immune to criticism.

Its not like its a small thing either, it impacts every single moment of gameplay. Its not 'going back to an outdated piece of shit version of the game' (strawman~) We are talking about literally making the game play like it did, which was a far more intuitive, FAR more powerful, way of using the engine and game that they have worked so hard on.

It might be you who is wrong~

Have you played the nightly? everything about it (other than the hotbar) is better than previous versions - more depth to nearly every mechanic, more to see/explore and vastly improved performance compared to recent stable versions plus more, all im saying is there's so much thats great and improved about the game and admittedly a small (but still fairly sizable) amount of ppl on here are being overly negative, criticism isn't making the game out to be ruined and completely exaggerating specific problems when the devs have put years of their lives into making this game, i think its a lot more helpful giving respectful opinions and feedback instead of whining like a baby, so i think i was right.

Why cripple your game just before launch? Having your new wave of players come into an awkward, unresolved GUI solution is not wise. If it plays clunky in the slightest, you will lose a proportion of your audience immediately - giving them no chance to spread it to their friends. Gameplay is #1, unless it's a story game, and this is clearly a sandbox/adventuring game... I hope that my initial impressions are wrong, but I won't be rushing to set up and build settlements on a server this summer.

The problem is, though, is that the hotbar is the game's main control method of your character, other than movement.

If it feels clunky to a person, then that person will be in a state of constant annoyance. It doesn't matter how awesome your game is, if the UI is not liked, your game will not be liked. There have been awesome games that have been given abysmally low scores because reviewers thought the UI was too difficult to use or inefficient.

Yea.. I have put hours and hours in on the new build/hotbar.. trying to learn to like it. We all realize there are TONS of improvements from previous, nobody is asking to turn the whole game back. I don't think you are comprehending what people are saying here my friend. So no, you are arguing some other point entirely, we are talking about the hotbar only.

    This.

I don't think any sane person is asking for the old hotbar in its entirety back. They do, however, want elements ("all 12 buttons at once" being the most common thing) back, though.

All slots visible simultaneously is the thing I want most, but drag and drop filling/removing is pretty important to me, as well.

I personally use 2 slots the same for both parts of the new bar: my favorite gun and salve/bandage. This way I can more or less fight without getting confused as those 2 keys always give me the same staff. But it's still a bigger chore than the old bar and I hope they'll improve it.

good point i guess it is a big deal, they'll probs sort it out with the outcry over it, plus they play the game themselves so they probably realize, im with everyone else hoping theres a change with this.

I would have it so that the left hand option would be placing blocks in the foreground and the right hand would place them in the background. I don't know about you guys but to use the same materials for both looks really tacky to me in almost every instance. So I inevitably end up using separate blocks for background and foreground.

While this functionality would be cool, it's not entirely necessary. I just assumed that when they switched it over to the new hotbar that's how it would be set up. Don't ask me why I assumed that, I don't really know.

The new hotbar could be useful. It also would be very nice if we could toggle between them. I don't want to have to commit to only having essentially five hotbar slots in comparison to 10. Not to mention, the old hotbar has been around since the beginning. A lot of players would long for the legacy hotbar, and if it's not added in as a toggle-able thing, then I'm sure someone will mod it in again. I say why put the community through the trouble of bringing back something that shouldn't have been removed in the first place?

They have told us in no uncertain terms to suck it up and we will not have a toggle, will not get a classic hotbar, and oh yea, its unmodable.

When I think about it I believe my anaolgy is very apt.

They dropped us in a sandbox world and told us to survive using a swiss army knife, but for some reason decided to take that away and give us A SPORK :/

I would say its more akin to switching from a swiss army knife, to a leatherman. Yes almost all the same functionality is there, you just have to open it up and fiddle with it a bit more to get the same uses out of it, and it might take a bit longer to use. I have played a ton more on the unstable. (a ton for me, probly less than 4 hours lol) And i'm really getting used to the new bar.

Do i prefer the old bar? I still think so. I like having all my buttons available at all times. Now i cant figure out how with my current setup to have my bug net up on bar one. It just go pushed to bar two which i had originally designated as my "building bar". Not to mention the creature capture pods and whatever else there is later that you use to catch bigger stuff.

I'm not digging on that at all. One of the things i'm most excited about with the 1.0 release is the ability to capture and store every single life form I come across. I'm going to dedicate an entire planet to be a zoo/museum. And I can't have my combat stuff up with my bug/creature catching stuff. I'm slightly disappointed with that, but it's nothing I cant work around.

But the dual wielding thing is okay. The 1h weapons im finding are very lackluster, but thats to be expected in the beginning of the game. I have even set up a farm for some quick money since the only npc's i seem to run into are merchants of some kind. Lots of stuff to buy.

So I guess despite my initial misgivings, I am in fact overcoming my distaste of the new bar. But I still don't see why we had to switch from the old one.

But it's a swiss army spork! And it comes with three hundred tools, that you must use two at a time in 12 predetermined combinations (half accessible lengthwise, spork must be flipped sideways to use second set of 6), which can be simply and intuitively set by means of an easy-to-understand procedure that only takes 30 minutes of your time. Per tool.

edit: Also, in light of this predicament, this forum ticker message has begun to greatly annoy me.

I would find that HORRENDOUSLY awful for building. Like, staggeringly bad, and production-killing. Limiting where I can place a block because I didn't put it in the exact right slot is... I don't get how that could conceivably be a plus.

Also, I STILL can't fathom why you'd want to use the hotbar for building in the first place. I invariably use way more materials than a hotbar would allow for.

For trying to build a "frame" (the foreground) blocks of a building, it's a LOT easier to do this with the inventory window CLOSED because of how freaking much space the inventory window takes up and you have to keep dragging the window back and forth so you can see where you're building.

It's easier to just stick the frame block(s) in a hotbar slot so you don't need that GINORMOUS window open. I even do it with background blocks too for the same reason, I hate having to scooch the inventory window left-to-right constantly just to fill in a whole room with background blocks.

That said, I'd LOVE a 12-button hotbar on the side (just one button per hotbar slot, because it's meant for building) for this exact reason. I hate messing around with the inventory window, it's just far larger than it really has to be. I really wish they'd give us an inventory-lite button that gets rid of the character equip/status area and shows ONLY the inventory.

At first I was really skeptical about it, but after playing for some hours it grew on me. The only thing I miss is having a regular style hotbar for building time (sort of a "build mode"), as the hotbar as it is is a bit lacking in slots. For regular exploring and general gameplay, it's fine.

All I want is a option to pick what toolbar to use, is that so hard? D:< You already had the old one in. So work done on the old one and the new one seems about done, so not allot of work going on there, either let us pick or make it modable. PLEASE!!!!!!!
