    It's a 2D cross-section.

Contrary to the two-dimensional representation depicted, a Y-Wing has two engines.

Internal rudders steer the exact direction of propulsion, however don't change the light emitted by the engine? Science is cheap and for the weak. We don't need that stuff.

Two engines that lay in the same horizontal plane and have the same orientation would not be capable of causing the type of rotation seen in the video.
That type of steering mechanism would allow the craft to change course but it wouldn't be a very good design as it would be inefficient and clumsy. It also wouldn't "look" as good as front thrusters.

It's a video game about space age tech. Dunno what to tell you. Not exactly a lot of reference material.

Mayhaps they are mounted on the ships sides which you obviously cant see since you are looking through said side? :p

The ship could have technology that allows the pilot to move in any direction she chooses without regard to the laws of physics. Hell, maybe some space cowboys lassoed a couple of black holes and tied them to the hull, and ship manipulates their gravitational fields in order to turn by feeding them dark matter treats. There are a number of explanations that a player could invent to explain the motion she sees on the screen. But why should she need to? What makes great games great are the small things. It's little details like fore thrusters that show a developer loves every part of her game. I think the dev's would agree. Though they might think this little detail is unnecessary.

    Dont judge to fast anyway.

We all do know that the game is not even in Beta yet. So...
    It's far from being finnished.

So just in case some of you people aren't freaks that repeatedly pause the video to get every single line of code I will post something insightful I found at 0:22
//This line is probably very high on the list of lines of code that will never be ran ever
//It's required on the offchance that the world hasn't loaded when we would normally be exiting hyperspace
//to make sure that we have at least enough time before exiting hyperspace for the audio lead in to play
//this is the only case whre we have to make sure, because this is the only part with a potentially variable time

Same line pops up at 0:35
    So this means two things:
The FTL travel IS a loading screen, some people in the thread were wondering about that
Also the animation repeats itself several times during FTL travel, so either it's running too fast or they plan to add more lines to it, because now it looks kinda silly repeating itself.

The amount of goosebumps that 1min video gave me...so many feels.

  11. Nohar

    The FTL animation looks awesome.

Though, I find it to take quite a long time. I wouldn't mind if they could shorten it a little... Though, if it's a loading screen, I can understand why it would take so much time: after all, I guess the world creation process takes place during the animation.

  12. Isn't the FTL jump time going to be dependent upon distance between your ship amd the jump destination?

Adorably cute. I love it. It's nice to finally see some (alpha?) footage of an FTL jump, since we're probably going to do it alot.
Especially those little hidden lines in the code. I saw the first half of one, but the youtube framerate kept the speed so high that i couldn't catch it. ;)
Speaking of which, i wonder what happens if you run out of fuel mid-flight? Will you crash on the nearest planet, or will you be raided by space pirates and poptops or something?

I guess you could say that space travel is...STAR-BOUND...ehehehahahhahaa...i'm sorry

My guess is that the flight computer is wise enough to not allow a jump if the calculations would say that you run out of fuel underway.

Not to be the negative one in the room, but I'm really not a fan of how much the ship moves while you're walking around in it and I hope that's not an example of how the camera will work everywhere. There's a reason every 2D game has a certain threshold before the camera moves, if the camera is too tightly bound to the player it comes off as jerky, unnatural, and disorienting.

Dat Hyperjump animation. Now I'm even more impatiently awaiting the beta.

I could see the Devs probably adding a feature that makes the jump near instant at the cost of maybe some more fuel or maybe some other material cost like gems or ore in some quantity. I do love the current animation but options are always a nice thing to have.
