Pokebound: A new adventure!

As we begin on a lush planet, the selection of monsters is akin to starters. So, who do you pick?

  2. Nutmidge

  3. Poptop

So I was absolutely stoked with the monster capturing system in 1.0, so I came up with a way to play Starbound using Monsters. Pokebound!

    How it works:
You begin your journey by spawning in six capture pods and a healing station (as many as you need. I suggest three; one for your ship, one for your home and one to carry around for when you get into a scrape).

You must then take your starter weapon, in order to weaken a monster enough to capture it. Now that you have your first monster, you must dispose of your starter weapon, because you will only use monsters for offensive means.

After this, you continue your ordinary Starbound adventure, but with one extra goal: catch every monster in the galaxy! Thanks to preset monsters (e.g. Poptops), this is possible

    RULES:

-Once you have access to durasteel, you must make your own capture pods.
-Monsters are your only means of attack (an exception being when catching your first monster)
    -Shields are allowed.

    Tips:
-Remember that different monsters are found in different biomes, some of which on planets inaccessible early on in the game (think of it as how rarer pokemon are found on routes further on).
-Your monsters is affected by the users armour; separator armour gives the monster high health and armour, which manipulator armour gives the monster high damage and energy reserves. Suit up accordingly!

Good luck out there, my fellow monster trainer wannabes!

Not a bad idea. For the sake of the poll here are the monster images and some basic info:

Gleap: [IMG] - For someone who want a real challenge. What you see is what you get.
Nutmidge: [IMG] - When defeated it will burst into three Nutmidgeling: [IMG] - Which beside the numbers have nothing going for them. Never the less the easy mode of the group.

Poptop: [IMG] - Sings a lovely tune when idle.

Personally I think I'll go with the Poptop. Once I get something better the Poptop can chill on my ship and keep on singing her tune for me.

This sounds like an interesting challenge. I already know one of the monsters I'll specifically hunt for to catch: Orbide. The tall black things in Hive biomes on Midnight planets.

I love that cute little poptop <3

I cant stand that annoying little gleap

And honestly don't understand why there i'snt a nutmidge mini boss the biological transmutational possibilities are endless on this mob (yeah I went there)...unless there is?

This IS a really neat concept though, I would be interested in checking out a mod with these funtions! you could even give them strengths and weakness' according to home biome!

On a personal note, I too enjoy the orbide, but the slow attack speed KILLS me. They look so sleek but they're are just an upright slakoth, lol

First contact with them was awesome for me, it rose up out of the ground and all I could do was look at it in awe, then after it attacked I realized how freaking slowly it moved. Theoretically, I'd be able to kill them even with a Tier 1 dagger, which really disappoints me. I want them to actually be a threat.

Poptop, because an Adult Poptop is terrifying and big.

You can cap them too!! I've noticed some evolution type monsters in the nightly too!! Don't wanna be too spoillery but I've definitly seen signs of species progression in 1.0!

Can you put them in a spoiler tag and list them, please? I'm interested.

I don't think they actually evolve like Pokemon but there are clear relations between them.

    Poptop becomes an Adult Poptop:
[IMG] - Make an amazing wall if you can catch one.

SOrry to cause an "eep" moment. I meant that the basic monsters that are currently in the game could possibly be considered as evolutions in a "pokebound" type personal game mode, or mod.

Zerukoba has a great example! Since the newer monsters from the combat update are not in the wiki(starbounder.org that is, not starbound .wikia which seems to not be updated nearly as much as starbounder) I dont really know the names or I would make a fantasy list. However; On my first few planets, the fat body alien with a three stacked head has a tail the lights up like electricity. It is not hostile. There are 2 other monsters with this same tail that seem similar, and are hostile. One i've seen several times and was kinda tough, and another I've only seen a few times and was pretty damn tough for my starter system I must say. These would be a part of what I see as different evolutions of the same species.

Oh. I thought you meant some could actually change. It seems they removed the ability for mobs to level up. Also, yeah, I went through the wiki and found all the evolutions.

I think they are still tweaking the mobs. It could be my imagination, or possibly the rendering in the nightly is better for my old machine now, but it seems like orbide is a tad faster...Am I hallucinating?
