Well i am starting something different for race creation. Hopefully, given time, we can create well balanced races. We can't please everyone; But atleast they will fit into starbound.

Bad characterization is making of bad story telling. Illiterate is not who you want write for you. Creativity is good but with no guide or focus is bad.

The universe will be large! Maybe not at first, but there should be lots of races in the long run. There has been A LOT of support for a cat race and a wolf race. Just because a few people don't like the idea of cats or wolves doesn't mean they shouldn't or can't be in someday. Character customization is not a bad thing! (though mods are always an option)

I do definitely agree that the devs should sometimes make changes to ideas to have them fit better into the game.

As said before, ANY idea is valid as long as it fits. Just wanting a animal race BECAUSE it's that animal is poor reasoning behind it. It's worse if there's no thought put into a reason, and having that race in the game takes the creator's priority over having it fit the Starbound setting. It's selfish to the whole of the game and it'll devalue it.

I'm not saying no thought should be put into it. Ideas should definitely be expanded and adjusted to be more interesting.

Not saying you are, I'm expanding on how some people find the desire to be the creature more enticing than what the creature would actually do for the game. It leads to a rushed product.

Yup. It can potentially lead to rushing, but it doesn't have to be that way. The Glitch and Hyl-can't-remember-how-to-spell-it-aquatic-samurai-race are examples of this. People really wanted an aquatic race and a robotic race... just because they were robots & aquatic. I actually really wanted a robot race too. Everyone was surprised to see they gave us both. And they seem to be turning out fine, so far. :)

Anyway, there really aren't a whole ton of wolf or cat races in games. :cautious:

Is good reason for that. We sell as slaves. Poor hunt and not good lifespan. Never bioengineer again we say but who we fool? Character designer say "is look cliche, we can do better than." and then make different color human. Who they fool?
Is already bird race, cat people no good idea unless you be want war. Dog make situation worse.

These races could be added but the problem is that it takes time to create it. If we get to the point that the best thing to be added are these random races, then we can say the game is very complete with nothing to be incremented.
I would go for some more interesting content over new races anytime. As we already know, race specific tech will be available for any other race at some point in the game, so the only advantage would be aesthetic.

I dunno about that one. There are plenty of games where races are basically just an animal head slapped on to a humanoid body. World of Warcraft; Warhammer; Dungeons and Dragons, The Elder Scrolls, etc. etc.

And in some cases, I suppose this can and does work. Sadly, I feel like more often than not it detracts from the game. It's kind of easy (and lazy). While the Mass Effect series had its flaws, I thought the level of detail they put into the design and history of their various alien races was splendid. In many cases, you could tell they drew on animals for inspiration (birds for the Turians, amphibians for the Salarians), but they took it far beyond the "human with a bird's head" shtick and made something truly unique and interesting; and best of all, it felt plausible and real. I don't think I could get that same feeling watching a guy with a cat's head running around; it'd be too much like watching Loiter Squad.

I think you need to give the devs a bit more credit, slatwob. When I look at this thread, it really comes off as, "Hi, I know that you're making this entire game and that you've put a lot of work into making sure everything has proper lore, but for some reason I think that you have no idea what you're doing and will mess up without my help..." Now, the game's not out yet, so we really don't know what it's going to be like yet, but I think it's fair to say that, from what we've seen, it's pretty unlikely that just any idea has a shot. In fact, the team's stated intent to make the game highly moddable makes it even less likely that most ideas will be adopted. Popularity ceases to be a concern, because a popular idea is that much more likely to be made into a mod by someone, eventually. That in turn means the devs can be more conservative about picking and choosing suggestions, focusing on things that fit well into the kind of a world they have in mind, and choosing only ideas that either are things they hadn't considered but would make good, seamless additions, or else things that are very close to ideas they may have had regardless, but with a novel and/or well-conceptualized approach. By their very nature, most "Mary Sue" races would automatically fail these qualifications.

I know you're referring to mods, but just a polite recommendation, try to avoid sounding arrogant, condescending, or dismissive in the future if you wish to avoid a large amount of people getting angry. Also try to be clear and precise to avoid the same.

To be totally fair, I actually want people to read my posts and imagine the voice of a pompous British intellectual (because it amuses me).

To avoid assumptions that you're being insulting I would recommend being very clear as to what you are saying and not leave out any information.

I presume you're implying that this topic is just farming likes? Because it's asking for something that's obviously going to happen one way or the other? If that's the joke, then I find it funny. If not, eh, I guess I just read to much into things. Either way, the comment got a chuckle out of me, so, sure. Have a freebie.
