I think ya missed the point.. Let me give some numbers.. (Note I am not saying in anyway Starbound is going to do this, but I am just using it as an example to show the greed of these games)

Lets say Starbound sells for 20 Dollars (hypothetical number), and it sells 1 mil copies (Not unheard of as Terraria has sold more then that many). So we are up to 20 Million Dollars, minus Taxes, paying off the Distributors etc.. lets just say 18 Mil (I have no idea to be honest but again this is just hypothetical), now that split.. what 6 ways.. 3 mil a person. Not too shabby.. Now let me ask ya, do you really think they need to charge another 5 dollars (5 Mil total for them) for something else? Or is that just being greedy?

The problem is there are so many people just throwing money at these people it is an easy buck just to make something that takes very little time, and add it in for extra money. They want to get every penny they can before you realize how bad their game is without it (Or clear it and get bored), and move on to something else.

It doesn't matter if it is "Balanced" or "Fair" what matters is you are now paying them more money for something that you should of either got with your original purchase, or not at all. They got their money, and they have enough to well pay for the time and effort they put into making the game (Do the math above, but change 20 to 60.. as this is where the general game is at), but it isn't enough for them.. they want more and more, hoping to get theirs before the market for that particular thing drops out cause no-one can afford it anymore, or people finally realize how much they are being screwed.

I give some major respect to Redigit, he put out a game, updated it, added new things to it, and never asked for anymore money then the original purchase. Sure he dropped it a bit later, but other then not giving out the API before he did it I have no prob with that at all. He did his part, and never asked for more for "DLC" or some kind of "Micro-Transaction Market". I truly hope Starbound follows this example, and does things the right way, not falling into the greed that game market is full of. Which from everything that has been said it looks like they are on the right track.

Here is a thought.. They say a fool and his money will soon be parted. It should be a gamer and his money with how things are today, and unfortunately I do not see it changing.

Okay, first, Red 5 Studios is not comprised of six people. They have 82. As well, they've run the closed beta for I believe at least one and a half years. They've only added the cash shop in the most recent update.

I'm not going to dispute the ease of creating something for an easy buck, but I'm going to dispute the second part of the statement.

The game isn't bad. It's given me personally nearly as much enjoyment as Team Fortress 2, and that's saying something. The devs are actively listening to their testers and implementing things they want and changing things they want changed.

FireFall is free to play, not buy to play and then pay more for content.

And Red 5 hasn't gotten their money yet. They've been developing FireFall for years with no income from it. They've gotten investment from The9, but they need to pay that back.

I respect Redigit too. He didn't deserve the flak that came from terminating development.

I see no reason for Starbound not to follow Terraria's example. There's literally no reason to believe that it wouldn't. Seriously.

DLC is fine with me, but sometimes it's just stupid DLC. Stupid DLC is DLC that comes with the game but requires you to pay to unlock the stuff already included in the game resources.

Most of the people I've seen buy the $100 pack are those who've been in the beta for a long time.

My issue with this thread is it makes no sense to draw attention to what Red 5 is doing in the context of Starbound's development. There's no indication that the Starbound devs are planning to do anything like this or have even considered the prospect, and in fact they have already stated that microtransactions will NOT be in the game.

    1. yes it is. f2p games have item shops. if a game is available without paying for it and it doesn't have an item shop, then it is called a free game. look it up...

    2. well yes, people try to make their living with their job. your point?

    3. while we all know this is true, f2p has other advantages over subscription based games, for instance the amount of active players. how long do you think firefall would run with a subscription-based model? 2 months? maybe 3? subscription based models don't work anymore, and even WoW will eventually find that out in a few years.

    4. have you ever heard that from someone who was selling you something? like "you already had 5 portions of ice cream, eating another one will make your stomach hurt" ? of course not. why would they? people earn their own money and are entitled to do with it what they want. why would the one getting money from you care? and still, i have an example of this being the case; in battleforge for example, the amount of money you can fill your account with and the amount of money you can use per day are limited. so yeah....

    5. are you making this stuff up as you go? this is not how f2p games work. this is not how they are allowed to work. your example has no relation to the actual topic of this discussion...

    6. and i would rather see f2p games ala LoL, TF2 or Dota 2, because f2p without giving advantages to paying players actually work. i would NEVER pay monthly, no mather how good the game. it just costs to much money. different people with different opinions, you see?

    7. oh my, they didn't want to lose their jobs and everything they worked so hard for for years because their playerbase is dwindling... those selfish, greedy bastards...

    8. WHY THE HECK ARE WE EVEN DISCUSSING THOSE THINGS HERE? IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STARBOUND AT ALL!

I believe with this one he was referencing the really scummy F2P games where you literally cannot progress all the way without paying out the ass... or spending 2 years grinding.

i know, but the example is still invalid. a better example would be: "you walk over the bridge, and after half an hour of walking, you notice that the bridge is 15km long. suddenly the guy comes around again and asks you: hey, don't you want to buy this segway to make things easier?" you can either go back (stop playing), continue walking (start grinding) or use the segway (pay). that is how it works...

Tiy mentioned that there will not be any micro transactions of any sort, and that there is a possibility of DLC (Probably free, but I wouldn't mind paying :p)

Yeah, OPs question has been answered, game will have no micro-transactions - and then the thread turned into something else completely. Locked.
