Ask for $100, $50, and $20 with perks and "state" it as founder gifts. I hate it when games, esp indie games, start running the game off with item shops. Borderlands 2 tried something like that too. So much money.

I like Starbound's deal with Wanderlust better.

I don't see why Starbound would have an item shop, seeing as there are no game servers the dev team needs to pay for.

I just have to say, finding out about those firefall founders packs was just a big disappointment. That is just....ugh. @_@

What is wrong with free to play game wanting to sell some vanity and small boost to get some support from the beta community? Nobody is forcing you to buy those, and you are not missing out much if you don't.

If Starbound devs wanted to give someone a different skin for their spaceship, because people believe in the game and want to support it, then I don't see a problem with that either.

well its that the game has gone from vanity items being real life money, to having a special deal that includes a vehicle and a 15% experience boost.

15% is a significant advantage in Firefall.

  9. Even if they did charge for DLC/perks/whatever (which was already confirmed to be not happening), I highly doubt they'd charge that much considering the fact the game isn't even going to be above $20. That'd be ludicrous.

Red5 CEO already mentioned multiple times, that you will be able to craft your own bike without spending real money, its just it will look different. Yes people payed real money to have different skin for their bike, nothing more.

15% boost is nice, but then again, there was huge discussion about it and most people don't see it as selling power or direct advantage, its simple convenience. Someone is getting a boost, but they still have to go out and earn the exp just like everyone else. I guess its up to individual opinion on the matter, but I don't see it as game breaking deal at all, just people supporting development of the game.

The pony speaks the truth, Tiy said they would never do anything like this. I mean people have offered to GIVE money to the Devs, but he didn't want to do things that way. Thats why the Wanderlust game was promoted.

Even though Tiy said there'd be no microtransactions, I would still love to have the opportunity to mock and tease the people who have 20+ decals, pets and namtags brought from the cash shop for the express service of showing off.

    o_O...

i've been tracking the development of bl2 since the very beginning, and i never heard of that. care to go into detail...?

also, firefall is a f2p game. i'm not sure how you could make any sort of connection to starbound here, seeing that it has a completely different payment model...
btw, firefall was announced to be f2p since its very first announcement 2 years ago. having item-shops is actually the very definition of f2p-games, so i don't see any problem here, either. unless you wanted the game for free without any drawbacks, which is a pretty spoiled way of thinking.

Ya know reading through this, I had very little worry that Starbound would do something like this.. (It usually is easy to see the greedy ones.. they are the one going straight for the wallet heh). But this here... this is the problem.. Item-shops are not actually the very definition of f2p.. Free To Play is actually the definition. Originally "micro-transactions" are only put in to make them money.. (Or some rare times it is used for actually paying for the server). They do this because it tricks people into spending more money then they would per month, because as we all know most people are impulse buyers. This is what they are counting on, all those people who are like Oh! I must have that, and buy the thing before they can think about it, and it is one of the most abused systems in games today. There are games that make you spend 20-30 dollars for one thing, and then there are others that only let you buy things for a short period of time. There is no regulation in pricing or duration so they do whatever they want, and people just keep on buying it.. Here is a question, when have you ever heard of a place saying.. "Hey we reached the amount we needed.. No need to purchase cash shop items for now. Thanks!".. I have never heard it, but if someone has they are lucky, as most are waaaaay to greedy to do something like this.

I am not saying they are "All Bad' (I find the game where the rewards you get as you play are things you can use to buy cash shop items... acceptable... barely) I understand there are some that are more like donations then an actual cash shop, but think of it this way... Every time they sell something on a cash shop.. They are saying that yes.. they have this content, but no.. unless you pay them even more money (On their terms.. there is no battering in a cash shop) you are not going to get it. Here is an example, What if I told you that you could cross a bridge for free, and then half way across I said oh... sorry but you have to pay me 30 dollars to finish crossing? Since the first half was free... It was a free to pass bridge. It really is just silly.

To be honest I would rather a monthly subscription compared to a game with a cash shop. You will end up spending less money, and getting more content. All these games that were pay to play that went "Free To Play" with a cash shop.. should of died away and been replaced by new and interesting games (Don't get me wrong I would of been sad to see LOTRO go, or some of the other games go). But they have realized that if they go with micro-transitions they don't have to worry about people paying monthly.. they will trickle money to them and they can hold on for a lot longer in profit. So their death becomes more like a slow bleed then a quick simple separation

Yeah but the amount they are asking for FireFall is higher than anything I've heard. And second, that studio is based in the wealthy, suburban coastal city of Irvine. What do they need all that money for? And not to mention, the donation gift will give an unfair advantage to people who pay.

Borderlands 2 had 2 different pre-order things I believe. One was alot of money and the other not so much. Borderlands 2 pre-order perks for cosmetics I just don't like, but at least the pre order perks for Borderlands 2 does not give an unfair advantage.

If Starbound had a pre-order bonus, which I hope it won't, then I would say $5 more for one cosmetic item or one thing and no xp perks.

15% additional experience is not all that much. If you have to spend 10 minutes killing things to get a certain amount of XP, and I have the 15% increase, I have to spend 9 minutes and 10 seconds. That's not a big difference. Besides, XP boosts are not "unfair advantages." They're a convenience. If they sold sniper rifles that had +15% damage and had 5 bullets per clip, that would be an "unfair advantage."

Also, just because the studio is in Irvine doesn't mean they don't need the money. Even if they don't, it's purely a voluntary outlay on the player's part. They don't require you to buy them to play, nor are the rewards such that you NEED them to play the game.
