It sucks to be sure, I used to be able to play PvP in WoW and do okay. Used to Play Unreal Tournament at LAN parties and do ok. Same for Far Cry. Now a days to beat games like Saints Row The Third or Batman Arkham games I have to play on easy or casual. And I still die a lot. I died a lot playing Saints Row The Third, and that was on casual difficulty. The last game I beat on its hardest difficulty was Diablo 3. And that was after they nerfed Inferno down and lots of farming for gold to by gear on the AH. Ismetric ARPGs are one of the easier genres to play with messed up hands for me. But it get boring playing the same genre all the time. When my hands really hurt I stick to stuff like Civ 5 and X-Com Enemy Unknown/Within. I would say Platformers are probably the hardest to play.

i can imagine. FPSes are probably up there as well, what with all the precision movements and such. platformers are very like that as well. it's a shame there isn't something that can make controlling stuff easier, but i'm not quite sure what it would take to do that. especially since everything requires using your hands for now. sad day. :-(

That's fantastic, but SMB and Shantae have similar running, jumping, and platforming mechanics. Nethack doesn't.

after you get a few decent techs it becomes so easy, like the buttfly bubble one, lets you fly at insane speeds so you can cover entire small planets in a few mins

    Hey uh, by the way.

Did any of you happen to notice under the genre list in steam, Starbound is listed under CASUAL?

I agree the game shouldn't be made simpler because a few people find it "Difficult"
People are always going to find games difficult, but it matters how smart you are to use what you know to your advantage.

As the game progresses it should get harder, and enemies should get smarter.
For example [for sake of argument]

Level 1 enemies having only 1 type of attack.
Level 2 Enemies having 2 types of attack and swarm you
Level 3 Some Enemies have homing attacks
Level 4 enemies may have mini minion spawner's
Level 5 Enemies may have immunity to some types of attack
Level 6 enemies may be able to destroy weaker blocks
Level 7 enemies can destroy medium blocks
Level 8 enemies have ability to blink
Level 9 enemies can attack in the dark
Level 10 enemies - do debuffs to you which last forever unless bandage applied
Level SS = Have 500% more health then you and does 9999999999999999999999999999 x 10^99999999999999999 damage

The actual term of Casual can be translated directly to Arcade and that doesn't mean that the game shouldn't be difficult. For some reason people don't associate this and think that a Casual game should be easy.
For instance with the actual game standards a SMB3 game will be considered casual and I can tell you that some of the stages it has are pretty hard to beat even for people that considers themselves *hardcore gamers* :)

I find the progression in the game is fantastic until you hit the Beta sector, and with the current system you are slapped with a nearly masochistic difficulty ramp which would be awesome... if only there was a way to actually progress in a way that feels significant. In the first few systems finding the materials needed for armor really felt like it was well paced, and with each armor tier requiring the one below it as a component really compliments it. After reaching up to steel weapons and silver armor there was a giant halt on progress whereby the weapons are suitable for the monsters but if you are so much as nicked by any of the monsters a few levels above you, you are reduced to dust. I never figured why that was until I read Tiy's post and it all clicked together that the level system was different that anything I ever expected... but it also highlights that the armor skips a lot of level ranges and that's why the difficulty goes from 'easy breezy' to 'metalcore deathfeast'. I think that the new update proposed will fix this and add a bit more flare to the defense system, and maybe the jump from silver to gold to whatever is next is just a knot in the wood, but it was a bit discouraging. Other that that one small complaint, I think that the 15 hours (4 from silver to gold xD ) I've played to steadily progress up to what I thought were "Endgame" tiers were fantastic... especially when I found out that there were already 2 more sectors.... :D

that... seems wrong. this game is by no means casual, even in it's vastly simplified beta version. no clue what is going on there.

not just that, but there are six more sectors beyond that as well.

Yeah the last FPS I tried was Borderlands 2,never did try to finish it was just too frustrating and pain inducing. Don't want to even think about trying a Modern Military Shooter like Call of Duty or Battlefield. A lot of the time the difficult thing is not being able to rebind keys. I bought Renegade Ops when it was on sale. Tried using a Gamepad and shooting felt imprecise, using mouse and keyboard aiming felt much better but they don/t let you rebind WASD to Arrow keys. And to top it off if you play on easy difficulty it locks you out from leveling up your vehicle and gives you infinite lives. I could understand maybe having extra lives on easy, but not being able to level up and feeling that sense of progression just sucks. Thats why I keep hoping they'll announce key rebinding for Starbound soon.

given that it's one of the most requested features, besides the xp and early mac fixes, i'd imagine it'll probably be one of the next things in. probably a couple patches from now at most.

After seeing how many people couldn't figure out time zones before beta launch, i have lost all faith in (gaming) humanity. All games for the rest of forever will be dumbed down because...... we as a species are generally dumb.

First of all, there's another "OMG, stop complaining you n00bz!" thread. We don't really need two of them.

Second of all, difficulty settings aren't even in the game yet. There will come a point when you have the option to handicap yourself if you want a challenge. For that matter, you can do so right now. If the game is too easy, try playing with gear that's weaker than the standard for where you're exploring. If there are too many resources, try limiting yourself to just using your Matter Manipulator. There are many ways that you can make the game harder for yourself if you find it too easy. There are no ways to make the game easier if you find it too hard.

Finally, as I've mentioned to the other elitists, the game is intended to be easily modified. Wait for that to decide on difficulty. When modding arrives, it will bring with it new mechanics, adjusted difficulty, and much more than what the devs could ever hope to provide. At that point, it won't matter what the base difficulty is like, only what you personalize your experience to be.

  17. I don't like this mentality. Why can't a game challenge you all the way through it? I've never liked a game that held my hand all the way through it until the end where all of a sudden it's a challenge. The very nature of "game" is to be challenged, there is a winner and a loser. You lose at some point if you don't become skilled at the game. Games shouldn't reward you for not learning how to play it.

I would expect to not to have this option, so just one difficulty.

A game should be easy at the beginning so it gives the player a chance to learn how the game works without getting frustrated and quitting because they're getting stomped. This is why there's a difficulty curve instead of a difficulty line (and before anyone gets smart, yes I know lines are technically curves. Bite me). The game can start easy and very quickly climb to a point where it's challenging.

If you look at your character on the select screen, there is a currently unused space for "Mode" (IIRC). It seems reasonable to assume that this will work similar to in other games, where you can choose to have easier or less forgiving rules apply to your character, ala Easy, Normal, Hard, and Hardcore type difficulty selection.
